The January 2026 Transfer Window

One of Rev's perennial baddies is our Greg. Brought in some great players and god knows how the mistakes were made. Not a baddie in the scheme of things. -

We could also ask why/how Broughton managed to complete those purchase during this first summer without a hiccup, but then suddenly "forgot" how to do his job As an additional (and unrelated to the above) - Pretty sure that whenever he was allowed to spend more than £1M on a player, they were a success (those he bought for under a million were much more hit and miss) - He at least knew how to get contracts signed -

Fair point. I always thought of him as more of a playmaker.

Not disagreeing necessarily, but why didnt Pasha step in and block the purchases of Hyam, Szmodics, Brittain then? -

Yeah it was stupid to promise that. He should have known better and sadly he has been made a scapegoat by many fans (including some on here) to the delight of Pasha. -

Agreed But you cannot promise something to the fans only for the exact same thing to happen again on your watch thats on Gregg an nobody else -

I’d say Hyam last min sale is the likely reason -
Paul Gallagher? Dropped deeper as he got older but we brought him through as a forward I think?

In a normal football club yes the buck would stop with him. But when you work at Rovers under the grip of Pasha, no. He left because he could no longer work under that regime. Just like Lambert. Just like JDT. Just like Eustace. Just like Park. Just like many others. Blaming Broughton for the transfer mishaps is naive at best. -

You might be right although in devil's advocate mode even if no-one is sold, they're only really "re-investing" the Hyam money received at the last minute in summer, and the net spend on fees for the season would only be around £1m. -

Not hard as such, but Flitty was always one who seemed happy to back his teammates up, or keen to get involved in a battle. -

Based on our January transfer activity for the past six seasons. If the official fee reported for Jorgensen is correct, then why didn't we spend that kind of money in all those other seasons, many of which when we were in the midst of a play-off push? This one just doesn't look 'right'. Only reason I can see them splash that kind of money is because they 'know' they will make a large player sale. Even in January 2017 in the season we got relegated, we didn't spend a single penny in January despite selling the likes of Hanley and Duffy in the summer. -

Pretty much. I thought the Mcguire collapse was even worse given what had preceded it 12 months previously. At least you could make the excuse when it hadn't happened before it wasn't something which was foreseeable etc etc -

As much as I loved him kicking bishop Brennan up the arse I’m not sure if Todd was a hard man or a coward with a hard man reputation. Someone like Nelsen, Hendry or Moran were old school hardmen who would throw themselves in front of anything. I reckon as a duo the management team of Michael Appleton and Darren Moore (the hardest man in football) would take some beating though. I did enjoy signing players with nicknames like The Axe (Mokoena) and The Butcher (Hakan Unsall) rather than today when we have Captain Cantwell and co. -

Broughton is clear of gestede and the clowns no doubt however to say he did a good job when he overseen two catastrophic windows is a stretch the Maguire window I can understand I thought his reasoning behind it was legitimate and made sense saying he trusted the previous structure to get it done he then went on to promise that it would never happen again under his watch he would have provisions in place it happened again - now people can say oh but you can’t expect him to send the documents himself etc….wrong you 100% can expect him to be there to send the documents in a timely manner given what had went on previous. He overseen windows that quite frankly was career threatening to some and gross negligence. I certainly don’t put all of the blame on him however when your heading that department the buck stops with you and as bad as that was I’d take him back over Rudy in a heartbeat -

None of the more modern players mentioned were true "hardmen" in the 60's/70's sense of the word when it was perfectly acceptable in the first 10-15 mins to put your immediate opponent for the afternoon into Row C just to let them know you were there. Or if you were a forward to clatter the opposition keeper. People like Ron "Chopper" Harris, Tommy Smith, diminutive Nobby Styles, Norman "Bite your legs" Hunter, Souness when he was playing etc. From a Rovers point of view in the 55 years I've been watching us we've generally always really lacked a bit of a nasty streak. For supporters of a certain era there's really only one answer to this, John Mcnamee. "Killer" Keeley was extremely dirty without really giving off the aura of being hard. Watched a highlight of an old game recently and Jim Branagan committed an act of GBH which would see him in huge trouble these days. Always considered Kevin Moran to be one of the toughest players ever to play for us without being dirty. Shearer was tough. Batty could handle himself. Andy Todd came over like a playground bully at a time when the game was going much less physical. He'd have been eaten alive in the 60's and 70's although it was funny to see Wenger moaning about him. - Today

We know the issue at Rovers is Pasha and currently to a lesser extent Gestede now. Attacking everyone who failed under Pasha and the Venkys (but succeeded elsewhere) is odd. Broughton did a good job under the circumstances and has been fantastic at other clubs. At Rovers under decent ownership, he would still be here and we wouldn't currently be where we are. -

None of us knows the full extent of actual fee paid upfront or potential add-ons but it's a transfer deal made for a player whose market value is a fair bit higher than what we usually go for in January. Also don't think Bodo Glimt will accept taking a "significant" loss having only signed him six months ago. Something tells me the board has received either a formal bid for Alebiosu or some form of guarantee that a bid will be made before window closes.
