[Archived] Brendan Flood - Burnley Director

Recommended Posts

According to yesterday's Lancashire Telegraph the millionaire BFC director used to attend St Mary's College in Blackburn. Aged 45, I think the report said he was one of five children from Rawtenstall/Rossendale Valley.

He must have been at SMC when I was, albeit four years below. There was a Mick Flood in my year from the Rossendale Valley, surely a brother or at least related.

When I started there in 1969 most of the non Blackburn and Darwen lads supported Burnley due to the catchment area covering Hyndburn and Rossendale and also the fact that Burnley were then one, and sometimes two, divisions above us in the league.

Any ex SMC lads know him? :brfc:

That would have put him two years above me ... but I must admit the name dosn't ring a bell.

Sorry CLB; I can't help myself, having left SMC in '49. However I do have a number of friends and younger relatives that were at SMC around the time you were there. Will put out a few feelers; watch this space.

Hmm, I don't remember a Brendan Flood from SMC, but perhaps he was in the year above me? I started in 73 at the College and left in 78.

I remember that there was a fair spread of Dingles, given the catchment area for the school being out as far as Rawtenstall, Clayton Le Moors and Clitheroe.

Off topic, but the school did produce some footballing talent of note, most prominent of recent times being Mike Duxbury. There were others though - a younger Brennan went on to play for Ipswich, Danny Keogh I think made it to the professional ranks. There must have been others - any thoughts or memories?

I guess he must have been in the same year as me. The name rings a bell though I can't picture him. Must have been in the "A" set rather than the "C" that I was in. Probably explains him being a millionaire and me not. :)

There were quite a few dingles that I remember and they all came on the same bus from Rawtenstall and other third world places.

John Waddington from Darwen played for Liverpool in the early to mid 70s. Never made it for the first team but was a regular in the reserves which was no mean feat at that time. Moved to Ewood and made a few appearances for the first team.

Mick Higgins from Rossendale played for Rovers reserves before moving on to Workington Town in the late 70s. :brfc:

Fife - I take it you met the legendary Father Stewart - a real swine by all accounts but had mellowed by the time I arrived. Both my uncles were at SMC and had a few stories to tell. :brfc:

Well I may well have been in that year ( and the 'A' stream) and I don't remember him either. Some Old Boys must do, I'll ask around this week.

Anyway, there seems to be a hell of a lot of Catholics on this board, that well known anti-Catholic Droggy must be seething with rage!

Heck, Fife, you must have been in the same year as my Dad who sadly passed away in 2001.

I knew Father Stewart as well as the Rev Kev . Didn't like the latter ; kept well out of the way of the former - fearsome bloke ....

Drog- if us Catholics weren't blessed with a sense of humour you might be subject to something a little worse than a bit of hassle off the mods .......fortunately we're not as lunatic as another religion I could mention...

Well, I was at SMC from 1975-82 and seem to recall a couple of Floods, albeit a year or two above me. I lived in Clitheroe at the time and can assure you there was a healthy BRFC contingent even in those dark times. Regrettably, the same could not be said of the Rossendale bus occupants who continued to point at aeroplanes and graze their knuckles on the floor throughput my time at SMC, with the notable exception of Gianni Snape who was, allegedly, far too busy conducting his own personal "chemistry experiments" and trying to look like Freddie Mercury.

Did I know him!? I still have nightmares about that maniac. He was supposed to be a Priest, and all he did was hurl both verbal and physical abuse at the boys in his classes. He certainly didn't hold back either on the naughty words; typical would be " you little snivelling ****ing swine" often followed up with a flying board duster, which I can vouch for, really did some damage. How he got away with it even in those days of rigid discipline I will never know. Somehow he did and was still at it some 16 years after I left, according to a younger relative of mine. The sad part of it all is that he could be a really good classics teacher when he wanted to be.

Steady on Drog, posters will start thinking you're bigoted.......... <_<

My bigotry does allow for clarity of thought wiggy..... at least I knew who to support against Glasgow Celtic! Your by now infamous pub quietening, conversation stopping "I'm not bothered who wins really.... I can't lose either way" could never ever have been attributed to me could it?

Anyway why don't you lot find a nice catholic club to support somewhere? After all you hardly need reminding that BRFC was originally started by a bunch of QEGS OB's you know. :tu: I guess such initiative is only to be expected by students from a proper grammar school. :P

My God! .... you must have been in the same year as me. Which house ... Chanel, Colin or Eymard?

Well knock me down with a feather! Which was the SMC house for atheists ES? B)

SMC was a great school but they sowed the seeds of their loss (and my gain) by introducing me to the concepts of 'rationalism' and 'good science'. ;)
