Where is Jay McEveley now, I hear you cry?

Answer: Still being made a fool of by opposition forwards. This is from the Plymouth v Preston match report (Plymouth won 1-0).

"Mackie had the beating of McEveley at will..."

I say it again, McEveley was one of the more defensively hapless left backs we've had in recent years. Anyone who thinks that he is a better player than Andy Taylor or Eddie Nolan, surely, does not have a strong argument. I strongly suspect that within two years time, the latter two will be playing at a higher level than McHeavily.

I don't think you know anything about Andy Taylor Rover6. In fact a challenge to you - I'm still waiting for an answer to the last time you were championing Taylor - Here.

I'm sure I've answered this many times before and people are very bored with me writing about Taylor but since you asked:

Was the Rovers U18 captain.

Became one of the most consistently impressive reserve players and becoming reserve captain.

Gained England U19 recognition.

Got called up by Hughes to Rovers first team squad.

Played effectively at right back for a couple of friendly games under Hughes when Lucas Neill was injured.

Made a decent impression in a short loan spell at Blackpool. Simon Grayson later tried to sign him to join the Champ outfit.

Had an outstanding but brief loan spell at Crewe Alex in League One.

Had a disappointing loan spell at Huddersfield, where he did at least make an impression with his set-pieces and assists.

Joined Tranmere part of the way through the season and still won their Young Player of the Season.

Is now an integral member of Tranmere's back four.

Manager Ronnie Moore has likened him to former Tranmere full back, Ryan Taylor.

From my very general knowledge, his strengths are his technical ability, distribution and set-pieces. His weaknesses are his pace and his physical strength.

That is what I know about Andy Taylor. And that is enough to make me believe that Rovers should have persevered with him rather than signing Berner.

That said, I've made this point before and only raise it again at your request. My point in the above post was that Jay McEveley is an inferior left back to Andy Taylor and I fully expect Andy Taylor to have surpassed McEveley in a couple of years time. Imo, McEveley has conned people into thinking that he is decent by his purple patch when he first played for Rovers. Since then, he has basically been awful and, imo, is a dirty player.

OK, the rest doesn't say anything really. McEvely's CV to date leaves Andy Taylor standing. England U21s and Premier league experience.

One final question, how do you know this about Taylor?

and how many times have you seen him play? and what qualifies you more than a member of the rovers payrolled staff?

At Academy and Reserve level Jay was far superior to Andy Taylor. As a youngster, McEveley was a central defender who could also operate at left-back. Andy Taylor now commands a regular place in what is the old Third Division while Jay is operating in the old Second Division. Both players have found their levels. Having watched both develop through the ranks at Ewood Park it is disappointing that neither was able to establish themselves with the Rovers. However, in truth, I don't think anyone who watches reserve football believed that Andy Taylor would ever make the grade in the Premier League. Jay looked the more promising as a youngster and looked a really decent prospect at one point but, sadly, he seemed to lose his way and wasn't helped by injuries.

I had high hopes for McEverly at one stage but his career went rapidly downhill after a spell at Burnley. Something else to dislike em for.

This is a serious question and not a dig. It appears that Parsonblue has obviously watched these players come through the ranks in order to make his opionions on them. Rover6, you feel that Andy Taylor will make it and will overtake Jay in a couple of years. I'm wondering what this opinion is based on??? Have you seen the two of them much at reserve and youth level with Rovers??

Interesting debate lads, keep it up. After all, it's still only two opinions... (the right one, and the wrong one JOKE  ).

To throw something into the mix - JM was always going to have more options due to flexibility. Sadly in our game, strong, physical players will always be more favoured than more technical, slighter, weaker players. JM also had more flexibility tactically with being a converted centre half?

Think in this case it's the 'apples/pears' comparison ultimately, one would really only ever be a left back in a side that could carry him (due to lack of pace & comparative weakness) whereas JM could go into a scrappers side, possibly in one of 3 positions. I guess it's like comparing Alan Wright to Lucas Neill ('footedness' apart), one would only ever be a left full-back, another being more an out-and-out defender that could play at left-back.
