  1. Well people have said "boxing is dead" and talked about the decline in gyms while MMA continues to grow. Even if the overall standard continues to drop there will probably still be someone like Tyson, Mayweather, etc to outdraw UFC. Tyson being a hilarious lunatic didn't hurt his PPV appeal either! Of course UFC is promoted completely differently to Boxing (including less trash talk unfortunately) so if that went down the whole industry would pretty much collapse.

Well that was an absolutely huge problem in the 90's due to people like John McCain. Almost put UFC out of business but the Fertittas (and White as he persuaded them to buy it) saved it. They struggled for a bit but then the Ultimate Fighter Tv show became a huge success. Now New York is scheduled to host its first ever UFC event at MSG. Nobody has been killed in UFC though I imagine it probably will happen at some point. There's been more deaths in the professional wrestling industry (including a few during a match in the ring) albeit mostly for lifestyle reasons. Plus the accident that killed Owen Hart.

There's still issues of course perhaps you heard about the fighter in Dublin who has just died. Joao Carvalho following his match with Charlie "the hospital" Ward. Guess people will ask Ward to change that nickname now though nobody seems to have blamed him. Did see some criticism of the ref for not stopping it sooner.

Deluded MMA fans say that. A forum I go on some people say it will surpass football! Deluded as I say.

  2. Boxing will always draw more than MMA and that will never change, coming from an MMA fan too.

Doesn't help that the majority of people around the world are a bit ignorant to the rules, regulations and sanctions in MMA competition. HUMAN COCKFIGHTING BARE KNUCKLE FIGHTS TO THE DEATH IN THE STEEL CAGE etc. Not that I blame people for thinking that way mind, if it doesn't grab you it just doesn't grab you, so if the interest isn't there then people won't look into it too deeply. It's come a long way in the last 25 years though.

I'm just a combat sports fan in general really.

  3. What is it with all these cover versions on adverts? They're all slowed down and quieter crap. It's like Eva Cassidy has returned. John Lewis, some yoghurt ad and Premier Inns are examples of what I mean.

I was saying exactly this to my wife a few weeks ago. Think John Lewis got the ball rolling and everyone seems to have followed suit.

  4. Haye is a blown up cruiserweight, with not many top level wins at heavyweight. Ruiz I would still class as credible even though if it was the end of his career. You can only fight who is around at the time though I suppose. But he does have the speed and the ring savvy I believe to take a fight with Joshua into the later rounds, still don't think he would win like but it would be interesting to see how Joshua's cardio holds up in the later rounds with all that muscle. This is assuming of course if he can avoid getting caught flush in the early rounds.

  5. Fury deserves credit, not respect, for doing a number on Klitschko, no doubt about that. His tactics on the night didn't seem to be about boxing his opponent at all and I'm not sure he could replicate the footwork again if required, but he got the job done, credit to him.

Maybe I'll watch the fight again, only seen it once, I may see things differently.

But hey it's all about opinions donnermeat, wouldn't do for us all to agree all of the time pal.

I certainly agree with that Gav and for what it's worth, I'm not even a massive fan of Fury either!

  6. So someone is more of an embarrassment for saying certain things rather than actual physically beating a woman? And Tyson was CONVICTED RAPIST. Ok then. Bit of a warped logic that.

For what it's worth, none are a an embarrassment to boxing in my opinion. Although Tyson goes close to the knuckle by biting part of someone's ear off mid fight. Embarrassment eh?

What about respect for what Fury did to Klitschko? You talk about 80 punches etc and I'm not trying to tell you how to suck eggs here but there's nuances like footwork etc involved in boxing and that night was a great performance from Fury to make a previously unbeatable looking fighter look ordinary. As a combat sports fan you can't help but have respect for that.

  7. Give me an Anthony Joshua any day over a Tyson Fury.

I agree the division needed a shake up, but not by someone who talked more than he punched.

Fury is an embarrassment to the sport, the sooner he retires the better.

I just can't take to Joshua, I'm not sure if I can buy his nice guy act, I can't quite put my finger on it. I think even you would admit you've gone over the top saying Fury is an embarrassment to the sport but hey, I can accept he's not everyone's cup of tea! It would be very boring if we were all the same!

  8. I think Fury brings some much needed character to the division personally. The alternative is the same old clichés being trotted out, same faceless challengers getting smashed back into oblivion etc. Like him or loathe him he gets people talking and I'd say the heavyweight division right now is the most interesting it's been for a long long time. Wilder too to a lesser extent, he will come out and say this and that and with his 'bomb squad' chant etc.

I hope Fury retains his titles and I believe he will do too. Klitschko still has a good chance, I'm certainly not writing him off, but there was zero things he did in the last fight to suggest he has enough in him to win them back. Fury is obviously no Sugar Ray or even a Pernell Whitaker, but I think he has Wladimir's number.

  9. Going to be blatantly pedantic again (at least I don't moan about typos) but why do people often say "enjoying a pint" instead of just "a pint?". I've never heard the line "enjoying a box of tic tacs" before that's for sure. Or even a reference to someone "enjoying a pepsi" for instance. I mean some people (like me) like Pepsi far more than alcohol!

Don't sweat the small stuff Vinjay.

  10. Went to Mowgli Street Food today at the Corn Exchange in Manchester, was delicious. We were going to go to Wahaca like Madon above, until we saw they had Mowgli, as we always fancied the one in Liverpool.

Will definitely go again as well as Wahaca too though!
