Or just a look at league positions over the past 5 seasons would probably do it

Why 5? Let's make it 10, or 20. Or let's count trophies over the last 30.

Or let's just count the most recent season and only worthwhile comparison. They finished a massive 2 points above us.

PNE. Massive attraction for any player?

My guess would be nobody has been home for Rovers. Everyone is on their hols. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in a player that they really are wanted when one club could be knocking on the door and the other is saying wait a few weeks until we are back from sangrias on the beach.

I'm not levelling this at Mowbray. We knew what league we were in this year a long time ago. Yet with flying out to India then a well earned break and not a huge backroom team we are always going to be playing catch up

They have phones. They can ring anyone, at any time.

Can't say I'd be too arsed, a league 1 centre half with no Championship experience and by all accounts is a greedy bastard. We could and should be looking to do better.

I've not really seen him play so no idea if he's any good. The problem though now is that PKE are now seen as a  bigger draw than us for prospective signings. I'd be surprised if they pay bigger wages, they certainly don't spend bigger on transfers. So what have they got that we haven't? My guess would be an inspiring, positive manager and not Lance Corporal Jones.

Mowbray said we are playing 2 up front this season (so Ben can run the channels and dribble).

So that means Ben plus another up top.

20 goals each and a hatful from an exciting Rothwell / Dack midfield.

    On our way back !

Of course that was more Mowbray nonsense and simply won't happen.

I don't remember him saying 2 up front but I remember him saying we would be trying 4-3-3 'like Liverpool'.

So a big target man and AA on one side and someone else on the other.

                               GK

    RB              CB             CB              LB

              CM          CM           CM

     RF                     CF                       LF

No idea where Dack would fit into that.

Be interesting to see what formation he starts the season with because I'm pretty sure it won't last.

Newcastle don't pay massive wages which is one of the reasons their fans aren't happy. I've no idea what Hanley was on at Newcastle but I'm very confident that Norwich won't be paying him huge bucks.

Newcastle were paying him £45k a week according to the article. He had to take a huge pay cut to go to Norwich. However, I bet he's still on more at Norwich than the highest paid player in our squad. Norwich's crowds are a lot bigger than ours and they aren't £130m in debt. Two years ago they reported (at the time) the Championship's 2nd highest wage bill ever at £55m. It will have gone down since then but it will still be considerably higher than ours. We pay around £15m at present iirc.

Is Jordan Hugill for 3m ish marquee enough for you?

I like Hugill, he's a big, strong mobile front man suited to being up there on his own. He's probably only a 15 goal a season man though at best. In a similar mould to Sam Gallagher. I'd imagine he's have to take a massive pay cut to come to Rovers so I can't see it unless it's on loan.

there is no way that Hanley is on £45000 at Norwich. Their wage structure is similar if not worse  than ours. Remember their odds at the start of the season suggested more relegation than promotion. You could probably half that and that would break their wage structure.

He probably got a big pay off from Newcastle granted but Norwich wouldn’t be splashing out the same. £45000 for a defensive lump let’s be sensible.

£45k at Newcastle not Norwich. The article clearly says he had to take a big pay cut to join Norwich. However, that wasn't @JHRover point, he said Hanley wouldn't have got a big pay rise going from Rovers to Newcastle, and then made some bogus comparison with Armstrong.

Always best to read the articles.

  8. 15 minutes ago, JHRover said:

People spent all last summer saying that we wouldn't land Armstrong because he was on big money at Newcastle and we couldn't afford him. Then he arrived, either because we could afford him, he wasnt on as much as everyone expected at Newcastle or he was willing to come down to enable the move to happen.

Newcastle don't pay mega money under Mike Ashley so whilst Hanley likely got a raise by going there I wouldn't expect it to have been that much. Ashley runs a tight ship and having just got relegated he wouldn't allow silly money on a Championship CB.

Hanley got at least £45k a week when he went to Newcastle.

Comparisons with AA are silly. AA has hardly played above league 1 before joining Rovers. AA was essentially on U23 money.

Hanley was an International when joining Newcastle for £5.5.m - was joining a club flush with parachute money - and was seen as a top Championship defender.

We never let all those goals in last ten mins when Hanley was in the back 4.  I like him and left because a premier league club wanted him.  Was it Benítez?

No. A Championship club wanted him and then when they got promoted he rarely featured and so they sold him back to a Championship club a year later.

Good Championship player, just not obviously 'far better' than Lenihan.

(For what it's worth, those clinging to hope that worst case scenario any Lenihan sale to SU would generate £12m+, you'll be very disappointed as it'll be nowhere near that high unfortunately)

TBF you couldn't possibly know that. All I know is that Lenihan is massively underrated by some.

I'd be very surprised if Rovers put a price of less than £10m on him.

If the question is about us playing a more passing game next year then Grant Hanley is certainly not the answer - he's as composed on the ball as an agoraphobic on the Yorkshire moors.

I think the question is will a passing game out from the back (as Mowbray has said he wants) make us more secure defensively?

Mowbray hasn't signed a good defender in his two and a half years at the club. This summer that needs to change. This is the summer that Mowbray runs out of excuses on the defensive front.

Bauer seems to be the favoured option. He'd better be good or we may be in all sorts of relegation trouble next season without the momentum-inspired start we had last season.

BLACKBURN. Surprise interest in old boy Grant Hanley. Poss loan deal with NORWICH. Wonder if that opens door for a SHEFF U bid for long term target Lenihan.

Frig me, people have speculated about that on here. He must go from forum to forum reading all the made up shite and then claiming it as his own.

He probably won’t though, will he?

No, he'll imply that Rovers historically isn't a big club and then go on to question the commitment of the fans.

Just like he did last summer.

Yeah his stats don't make great reading, but neither did DGs when we signed him. He's still got his best years ahead of him and he is a real handful on his day.

    Connor, that you? ?

I always though he was ok but he's not in the same class as Graham. Washington is more yer run the channels type of player.
