[Archived] Rovers V Birmingham 3-3 (phew)

For once, we agree. -
Such a crock. What has our boy Dunn done to show he's any better to have here than Emerton? 5 million was a steal and we should be thanking Souness as it was one of his better pieces of business. I do like Dunn as a player a lot, but at this point in his career he's no where near worth 5 million.

Lost 6-2, looks like I'll have to wait another season to get promoted. Counterattack did get me my second goal, and my players did pretty well. Opponent was just too strong, which I figured he would be. He should have gone up last season and it looks like he's learned from whatever mistakes he made at the end of the season. -
When Dunn is healthy and on his game, I wistfully wonder how good our midfield might be with him, Ferguson and Emerton. Sadly, he's not healthy and on his game enough. I'd hold no grudges and want to see him succeed against all other teams but us, but have to say, it looks as if Souness was right on this one. Good piece of business, I agree.

Happy with a point at home against a struggling side? Sad how our expectations have fallen. -
Without Yorke we don't finish 6th 2 seasons ago. Him and Duff worked well together that season. He didn't get the goals, but he did put the work in and set up a lot of chances with his crossing. Something lacking from the team's forwards since. And 1864, the save wasn't hard to make, was shot directly at him.

I was just about to say that. 3 Brum players against the 2 central defenders for the first goal. No support. Ferguson was great second half, but pulled a Flitty (who usually does it at the beginning of the second half) and disappeared during the last 20 minutes of the first. Almost forgot he was playing. I expect that out of a player of Flitty's caliber, but not out of our 7 million pound man. This isn't the first match he's done that in. MORE CONSISTENCY!! Dickov was a pest, but also a bit of a whiner. Cmon Paul, point 2 fingers towards your eyes again, the officials have never seen you do that. Every time he went down he was complaining and cursing (if my lip reading was accurate). Reid was excellent, my MOTM too, but partly to blame for one of the goals. I think with that performance he showed he deserves to be in there. However, Emerton did have an off day and I wouldn't have been upset to see him subbed for MGP at the end. I almost gave up at the end of the first half, and only came back in as Emertons? shot got pushed over the bar. Didn't expect that kind of comeback, and was quite happy and impressed. However, we never should have been in that situation. -

...but in the meantime can we afford to take firstly his mistake against liiverpool and two of the goals today were entirely his fault. We're in the mire and we can't afford school-boy errors. Plus he could have prevented the cross for the goal last week. Combine that with today and I'm seeing a disturbing trend... -

Why do I feel this is going to be a letdown? I'll tell you. 1. Birmingham is better than their record indicates. 2. The last 2 times I've paid to watch Rovers on Sunday were Leicester last season and Villa the season before, 2 of the most uninspired performances they've had. -
[Archived] Poll - Falling Attendances.
American replied to Tris's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Jim, while the other leagues might be suffering from drops, the Bundesliga has higher attendances. All at the time where their clubs make more than most off of Champs League TV money. Why? They have lowered the prices for matches, with some seats as low as 5 euro, and not just on days where they think attendance will be low. -

Ever think you're probably losing interest because the quality isn't as good any more? The Prem is becoming like it's neighboring league up north and the people see that. A few good teams, and the rest just fighting to stay up (and yes, I know you put that as a factor, but to me it's becoming the biggest factor). I don't watch as many matches myself anymore just because most of the matchups don't interest me. Even the third most entertaining match I saw this year (Norwich-Everton), I just stumbled upon because nothing else was on. The first 2 I'd have watched anyhow, #1 was Spurs-Arsenal, and #2 was Rovers-Liverpool. And for an American perspective, last season I was able to watch almost every ice hockey game played in the NHL if I wanted to and I watched more than I ever have. They have packages like that for every major sport now and a lot of our sport's attendances are growing and hitting all time highs. -

Mine youth squad hit excellent this week, and my pull was my first in 3 weeks with a TSI under 500. Passable 18 yo, though, so I might get a few bucks, at least enough to cover his pull. Sold my striker, so I can start keeper training this week, was going to start last week, but never had the time to change it. Lucky that, as one of my strikers went from Solid to Excellent! -
May I ask what YOU were doing trolling a Spurs page?
-
Funny how you seem to be the only one of the old timers with that opinion.

A lot more men have done that than win 5 FA Cup medals.

Yes, Penn State, not near any major city, had one of their lowest home crowds in years last week. Only 90,000 (yes, 90k, not 9k). You also have to look at the new markets the sport is expanding to thanks to Uncle Rupert and Al Gore (inventor of the Internet). Just looking at this site, we see fans from Aussie, the States, Norway, heck, even Malta. I love the fact that I can watch the 12:30 match, listen to the Rovers at 3, watch another match or 2 if they look any good. Part of the problem is that most of them just don't look any good. Too many uninspiring clubs out there, making uninspiring matchups. For every Spurs/Arsenal of last week, or Everton/Norwich of a few weeks back, we get Anyone/Bolton, Everton/Brum, Spurs/Chelsea a while ago. Most Liverpool matches of last season under Ged, etc. If the quality of the football (ok, maybe not quality, but excitement), was more like Spurs/Arsenal every week, then those articles wouldn't be written. They'd be writing about the rebirth and new found popularity of the sport. -
Put it this way. In 50 or 100 years if this poll was taken, Forrest would get more votes than Sherwood.
-
After careful consideration of the question, I decided to vote for Undecided. Yes, it was his right to make the move, but if it was a good move or not won't be known for a few years. For the pro-Parkes side, they are undefeated right now. For the anti-Parkes side, none of the (non-injury recovering) players, bar Jay, have even had a sniff at the first team squad, and by all accounts he was playing pretty uninspired under Parkes.
-
Interesting statistic from reading the History section of the FA's website. Forrest had 11 caps in a time where the English team didn't even go overseas (when they first went overseas in 1908, even that was mainland Europe), and no teams from the continent visited England until 1929. Contrast that to Sherwood, who had a total of 3 caps in a time where there are players who get that many caps in a month. Oh, and I'm guessing those of you who wouldn't vote for players you've never seen don't consider Pele one of the greatest of all times.

So you are comparing a guy who committed one of the worst atrocities in history and who practically everyone studies in school, with a guy who i've never heard of my Dad's never heard but because he won medals when the game was still barely more than an amateur affair with the rules still being changed every week. Yeah I see where you're coming from now good comparison. Can I change my vote please Den? You didn't see him commit these atrocities. You want to take other people's word for that, but not for other things, I guess. Sure, let's pick a guy who was NEVER near first choice for his country just because you've seen him play. I guess using your logic, Grabbi is better than Forrest, as you've seen him play. Heck, he's even better than Crompton. I see where you are coming from. Den, put me down for Grabbi, he played a couple of matches in the midfield.
-
Can you say Hitler was evil? You never saw his work first hand...
-
None of us think/hope that MGP fails (at least we didn't until Cuidado). We just want him to be brought along slowly and given time to adapt to a new country, new situation, new club, new style of play, etc. I think if we were safely mid-table more people would want to see him at least used as a sub.

You know Colin, I really wish I were living in your fantasy world instead of the real world.

Never thought I'd see the day I was disappointed with a West Ham loss!!

Won again, 4-0 this time. BIG match next week, me and the other undefeated team. Probably will try to counter-attack, even though HO says it's not a good tactic for me. I have a good midfield, but his is huge. He also plays 3-5-2, but moving one wing back up and having all his midfielders offensive. Anyone ever tried, or heard of, doing PIC to help the counter-attack? Should give him more possession, especially in the midfield. Probably dumb to do that, but a win here should give me the league, or at least a leg up on it. Trying to sell one of my solid strikers now, as the one I've been waiting to go to solid just did, so I can start training keepers once I have the cash to fire and hire the coaches to do it with.
