  1. This is a decent summary of the whole squad from Phil McNulty at the BBC; BBC - Ruthless Southgate
  2. Chelsea have binned Pochettino after one season; BBC: Pochettino leaves Chelsea What a reward for someone who looked like he'd finally figured out what he wanted to do. Boehly and his crew have spent enough money to fund the NHS for a good period of time and it has got them nothing. Now they'll have to pay out even more money in compensation to Pochettino and offer a lucrative contract to a new manager who will have the same task as his predecessor of to figure out what to with a bloated squad of expensive Panini sticker misfits, all being carried by Cole Palmer.
  3. I was looking at old squads myself. It is interesting to see. 5 of your first 6 switched teams since Euro 2021. Them not making this squad shows that the grass is not always greener, and with 3 of them at Man U I'd tell other young English players to keep away. Mainoo should leave now. The rest of them, aside from Coady who's past it and Ben White who hates Southgate, have been derailed by injuries. I am not bothered that any of the players you listed are not in. James and Sancho were once touted as being potential world beaters. James has appeared in roughly half of Chelsea's premier league games in the last 4 seasons, and Sancho is only now getting back to showing what he can do after 2 disastrous years at Old Trafford.
  4. No Chilwell makes me think that Southgate has been given positive reports on Shaw. He has used Trippier at left back plenty too. Quansah and Branthwaite are there for the experience. They both look very good. Is Colwill injured? He looked like he'd play a big part at this tournament. A left footed central defender is a rare find. I wouldn't be worried about Mainoo, he was the only calm head in a sputtering Man U team.
  5. Full squad here; ESPN: Rashford, Henderson out of Euro squad Goalkeepers: James Trafford, Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale, Jordan Pickford Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite, Jarrell Quansah, Luke Shaw, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kieran Trippier Midfielders: Adam Wharton, Kobbie Mainoo, Curtis Jones, Conor Gallagher, Declan Rice, Trent Alexander-Arnold Forwards: Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, James Maddison, Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Jack Grealish Southgate stalwarts Henderson, Rashford, and Phillips are out. Not one of them deserves a spot so fair play to Southgate. I doubt they will but all 3 of them should look at choices they've made over the past year or so. Henderson is winding down his career but going to Saudi Arabia was a bad idea. Ditto with Phillips signing for City, it completely derailed his career. So much so that West Ham gave up on him. As for Rashford, he has been moping around all season and now he is suffering the consequences of that. He needed to leave Man U 2 seasons ago. He is too comfortable and is able to get away with things that wouldn't cut it elsewhere. All of us on here want Wharton in, and I'm glad he made the initial 33. Looking at who is listed as a midfield player I agree with @joey_big_nosethat TAA is looking like the favourite to play alongside Rice. A few on here like Tomori, Southgate obviously doesn't. I am surprised at Joe Gomez. Maybe he's there as he can play anywhere across the back 4. If not for injuries at the wrong time he'd have had Maguire's spot.
  6. Of course England can win it, but it never happens. It is looking like this tournament is it for Southgate. Can he pull it out? The squad debate is on the other England thread. @superniko posted his guess that I agree with; Pickford, Ramsdale, GK3 Walker, Trent, Shaw, Trippier, Maguire, Stones, CB1, CB2 Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Maddison, CM1* Kane, Saka, Foden, Rashford FW1, FW2, FW3 *I doubt Wharton will get that spot, as much as he is beloved on here What doesn't help at all is that 3 of Southgate's preferred back 4 aren't currently playing. Maguire (there is no point debating whether he should be in the squad or not - he will be playing if fit) and Shaw are injured. Stones is currently on the outs with Guardiola. As for other issues Rashford is mad at Ten Hag and has downed tools. Grealish is another who's dealing with the ruthlessness of Guardiola and is a sub getting 10 minutes at best. Then you have Reece James who has been injured all season, only to come back and get sent off this week. Trent will be an interesting one. He is playing well for Liverpool. He won't play right back as Walker has that spot nailed down, so Southgate my play him in midfield.
  7. An interesting morning at the PGA Championship in Kentucky. A volunteer was hit by a bus and killed whilst on his way to the course. As cops, ambulances, and investigation officials were clearing it up Scottie Scheffler, current world number 1, was driving to the course. Unfortunately he ran through a cordon, cue a cop jumping on his car, trying to drag him out, then finally arresting him. ESPN: Scheffler arrested As of time of writing he's back on the course and has birdied his first hole.
  8. Wolves have had enough of VAR; ESPN: Wolves push to get rid of VAR next season If the FA can get it right VAR will help the game. However, they went down the NFL "clear and obvious" route when most decisions are neither clear nor obvious. I doubt that the Prem teams will vote it out but it should be used less.
  9. Rovers did that in 1991-92. Duncan Shearer was banging them in for Swindon. Rovers signed him, he played a few times, may have scored 1 or 2, and the last Rovers fans saw of him was in a suit watching at Wembley. He was sold in the summer. Here is transfermarkt for 1992-93; https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/transfers/wettbewerb/GB1/saison_id/1992 Rovers outspent all other teams, but looking at it they bought a whole new squad and many lasted a few years so overall it wasn't the moneybags moniker Rovers were unfairly given. As to City, Guardiola came in and bettered what Mancini and Pelligrini did. Those two could buy whoever they wanted, and Guardiola benefitted from that. Guardiola's big signings have been Haaland, Grealish, Dias, and Walker. Those 4 were arguably the best available for their positions. But he's also done very well with the rest of his squad, a testament to his abilities. Ederson, Akanji, Ake, Rhodri, Bernardo Silva, Stones and a few others are all class. How many of them would have been if they weren't playing under Guardiola?
  10. I read your post. I didn't jump to any conclusions. It certainly read like you were blaming Sylvester. I've no reason to doubt that he did cock it up but Venkys, not the now former club secretary, are the ultimate problem at Blackburn Rovers. The club shouldn't be scraping around for players at the end of the transfer window. As for conspiracy theories. It was widely reported that the Maguire deal changed at the last minute. You said that Maguire's agent knew that the deal had changed before he got on the plane. This article says it occurred whilst he was "en route"; CBS Sports - Maguire deal collapses. It was also well known that JDT had his budget slashed last summer. Here is the BBC reporting on it; BBC - "very serious situation" at Rovers. Venkys could do two things that would alleviate a lot of problems; sell up, or run the club properly. It doesn't look like they will do either though.
  11. The only people to blame for the current state at Blackburn Rovers are Venkys. Their ownership has been nothing short of a disaster and continues every day that they are in charge. But yes, let's blame the long serving club secretary who was set up to submit a transfer, only to have allegedly have funds pulled at the last minute to be replaced by a hastily put together loan deal. Was it his fault with O'Brien last year too? if so, why wasn't he gone at the end of the 22-23 season? Was it also JDT's fault last summer when Rovers signed nobody of note for a fee? Did he rub potential signees the wrong way? No he didn't, the money tap was again, allegedly, turned off by Venkys. Pull your head out of the sand and you'll see who the real culprits are.
  12. I always like it when Man U get a good shoeing. They got absolutely thumped. Casemiro at the back did not work. Who decided to pay all that money for Antony. He is shocking.
  13. They were. JDT conceded 55 in 29 games. Eustace 19 in 17. Rovers went from conceding roughly 2 goals per game under JDT to 1 under Eustace. He deserves credit for that. However, I think new blood at the back is still needed. A solid keeper is paramount. Pears and Walstadt aren't good enough. McFadz is too old. Wharton injured. Hyam is seemingly losing it. Pickering and Brittain are hot and cold so replacing 2 of those would help.
  14. I think so, although it could have been Gary Rowett. Another Birmingham connection.
  15. Player of the season by a country mile. I hope that he stays. But 27 goals in a struggling team will have teams looking at him. Add on him signing a contract extension this season means that Waggott and crew will be rubbing their hands knowing that the club will get a decent fee for him. Rovers under Venkys have had some good goalscorers Rhodes, Gestede, Armstrong, Dack, and Diaz (not Brereton). All of them (Dack aside - injuries robbed him of the chance) played in the Premier League - however briefly, and all of them weren't able to sustain their time there. I wouldn't fault him at all if he asks for a Prem move, we'd all do the same, but would it work out and where could he go?
  16. He is a puzzlement to me. Over the years he was mentioned quite regularly on here as a manager who could come in and do well. He was doing that at Brum then got fired for reasons that are now haunting them. His brief tenure has been middling. He kept Rovers up, so disaster was averted, but no home wins and some bad losses with very iffy performances has me wondering. The old adage of give him a pre-season is never more apt. Having time to cement his ideas on the squad should help. However, the usual caveat needs to be made; who knows what clueless Venkys will do. Good owners will invest, strengthen, and give the manager the best opportunity to succeed. Venkys are the opposite of good owners so I am at a loss as to what he'll be like.
  17. I'm glad it's all over. I'm also glad that Leicester didn't need anything from the game. Szmodics scored 27 of Rovers 60 league goals. Talk about a 1 man team. Whether he stays or goes, it's imperative that Rovers strengthen at the back. Only relegated Huddersfield and Rotherham conceded more. A decent keeper is paramount.
  18. Rovers managed 14 points from their last 11, surpassing my miserly guess of 9. What a strange bag of results. No home wins, away success against the cream of the division, and 2 5 goal matches - one for one against. Also, never ask me for betting tips.
  19. Thankfully a dull first half. Vardy should have scored though. He was trying to be clever with his finish. Good job they have nothing to play for or else he would have buried it. More boredom second half please.
  20. Ah, OK. I had to do some permutations to figure it out. If Sheff Wed win or draw and the other two win, Rovers go down with a loss. Lesser results than that for any or all 3 keep Rovers up. Rovers - win 53, draw 51, loss 50 Sheff Wed - win 53, draw 51, loss 50 Plymouth - win 51, draw, 49, loss 48 Birmingham - win 50 (+better gd), draw 48, loss 47
  21. Leicester are already promoted. Whether they are playing for top or second won't matter to them. They'll be full of confidence and wanting to put on a show for their fans. Rovers are going to need help from 2 of Hull, Norwich, and Sunderland to stay up.
  22. That's what happened against Sheff Wed. All the hype before the game then they played with all the fervour of a dead fish. Coventry have had a taxing week. Coming within a big toe of beating Man U and getting to the cup final, then losing at home to a fellow play off hopeful. What better way to bring back the hope than having spineless Rovers roll over and give them an easy 3 points. Last Sunday's game was the most significant of the season and the players didn't turn up. They get to put it right tomorrow. Eustace has had another full week with no travelling to work on how they'll play. However, none of that will matter if players continue making risible errors that cost goals. I want a win but can't see anything but a defeat knowing that when it matters Rovers usually shirk.
  23. A mate sent me this. I think it's been debunked but I tell all and sundry that Lewandowski would have been a Rovers player if not for that Icelandic volcano erupting that year.
  24. The whole team is slow. I've been saying it all season. Not one player has any pace. Other teams don't have to worry about getting beat over the top so can play a higher line thus putting pressure on the defence, who crumble regularly.
  25. Woeful. Inept. Ridiculous. Eustace had a full week to prepare for a game that if won would have guaranteed Championship football next season. It looked like he gave them the week off. I don't think that Rovers had a shot on target in the second half. That in itself is a sad indictment of the performance. Rovers subs bench is an embarrassment. Markanday? Buckley? The young lads? Pears and Hyam will get most of the grief for their errors, rightly so, but all 3 of their goals started with Rovers having possession and comfortably so. Goal 1: Sheff Wed corner, Rovers win it and start a counter attack. Dolan plays an utterly stupid pass toward the touch line. Wednesday intercept it. Goal 2: Rovers throw in on the half way line. The ball goes to Szmodics who had not 1 but two bad touches. He loses it. Wharton then erratically dives in, cue break and goal. Goal 3: Rovers throw in. No Wednesday player close. The ball goes back to Hyam. The rest is history. All in, blame the players for a bad day, but ultimately blame Venkys for putting the club in this situation.
