  1. There are more than the lads you've mention mate Charlie Doyle for example has been injured recently but isn't far off being fit, he will be a candidate for a loan, but if Magloire goes back to Rochdale which is possible due to the loan being for the season, it could well scupper a loan for Doyle who will be expected to play for the 23s but who will be looking for a loan as it doesn't look like there is much going for him at Rovers apart from u23s football
  2. Well bully for you mate and good luck to the Preston lads mentioned, but I'm not here to argue if Rovers academy is shit or not I'm talking about developing players Rovers players I couldn't really give a shit about Preston to be honest and you have shown you haven't a clue when it comes to Rovers academy players with you spouting they are all shit, it sounds to me like someone nay have an axe to grind, did you or a family member get binned from Rovers academy or something as you seem to have a real downer on it And the players are there if you don't know about them go and watch the 23s for a few weeks you may get to know if these lads are shit or not as I can't see what your basing this part of your comment on (probably nothing) Also no investment, you really are clueless with this comment it cost in the region of £3mill a year to have a Cat 1 academy and to sustain that during the difficult last few years, with City, United, Everton and Liverpool on the doorstep and compete with them is a pretty top achievement for me I won't be responding to you after this as you really havent got a clue and you've never watched the 23s over the last few years I can tell and so for me most of your points are mute
  3. I should have been clearer when I mean physicality I don't mean speed of the game etc I'm talking more likely to get kicked up and down by a player who is limited and can't match him with ability so is more likely to leave something on him and with his slight build he could be exposed to injury The loaning of young players is a difficult situation granted, and as you say Rovers have had issues with it in the past, but the crop of young players in and around the 1st team are the best bunch Rovers have had for some time and I believe they're are not short of admirers from L1 and L2, it could be interesting for a few come January, but of course it all depends on the manager and his staff if anyone from this crop is to go, I fully expect Magloire for example to go back to Rochdale, which means some one else will miss out on an opportunity As far as game time goes Buckley will play tommorow against Newcastle u23s as I know he is in the squad and that Davenport and JRC arent It could be the start of him getting a few games to keep him ticking over as he needs them without doubt
  4. Totally agree, he needs regular mens football but you can't as you say just place lads anywhere, it needs to suit all parties and the lad needs to know he will play and that the team he's going to play a style of football that suits the player and his development, so to send him into non league football would be absolutely stupid if he ain't going to cope physically in L1/2 he won't cope lower down as the lower you go the higher the physical demands, it is a quandary that the club will have seen before and will know where they want to if they do that is want to place him anywhere, they may feel he's best suited staying where he is at the minute, which wouldn't surprise me at all
  5. I'm wrong? You're going on about PNE who don't even have an u23s team, and have a Cat3 academy so any youth player they send out on loan is coming from either their18s or is not getting any game time due to being to old for the 18s and not good enough for their 1st team, so a loan to a non league club is about the LEVEL they are at as football is about levels (but you seem to have more knowledge about that than me haha, yeah right) and their youth players are nowhere near the level of Rovers Yes I've seen a hell of a lot of Buckley, in fact the only people who may have seen more of him are his family, he may be slight but he is very technical, he is a clever footballer who knows how to carry the ball well and protect it, if Buckley was made available tommorow the clubs chasing him would be ridiculous trust me, I've been watching youth football at the highest level for the last 15 years (not just Rovers) I know a decent footballer when I see one and I also know what footballers need for development, and your idea is antiquated in fact it's going back to the 60s and 70s so sorry if you don't get football mate, that's not my problem Buckley is so far above Conference level he would get kicked to fuck and that is not developing anyone what so ever Rovers is a different animal, as I've stated and if you knew about academy football you would know that the U23s play against the top youth players in the country, ask yourself this, would Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Everton, Arsenal, Spurs, Leicester City ect ect ect send their youngsters to the conference North, would they balls, Man United u23s are a division below Rovers u23s, you won't see any of their lads anywhere near the conference North, the players they have out on loan are at Southend, Tromso (Norway) and Morecombe to name a few that's because it doesn't suit player development to place them in a club at a level we'll below the developing player, (see levels again) 1st and foremost it's about the football nothing else, simple as that, but you expect Rovers to send their youngsters down there, even the one that has shown he has something about him and is actually involved day in day out with the 1st team, I think you are the one that is Wrong massively, so if you have nothing more than send him to a conference North team to toughen him up or whatever don't bother responding to this as it will show me your LEVEL of knowledge, which at the min ain't much mate
  6. No chance, you don't do this when developing players, I wouldn't recommend any player that is in and around the 1st team no matter what build or strgths or weekness they have dropping any lower than L2 Rovers u23s play at the highest level of youth football available in this country, I see players dropping into conference North etc and think its a waste, if you aren't getting game time fair enough I see that maybe your only option, but to think any of the highly rated players would benefit from dropping down so many levels is ridiculous and counter productive for both the player and the club, especially the likes of Buckley, JRC, Butterworth, Vale etc
  7. You're right it wouldn't happen, Buckley would not benefit in any way from a loan move any lower than league 1, he has been in every match day squad this season and is highly thought of, dropping into non league football and getting kicked to death isn't going to help him develop (even if some on here think he would hmmm) He is a technical player if I was looking after him I would want a loan only to the top half of L1, I wouldn't bother with anything lower, what some seem to forget is not all footballers are the same they have differing strengths and weekness, JRC would cope down in league 2 because he is robust enough to cope with the physical side, Buckley wouldn't, it would be counter productive, he could come back worse than when he went, some players need to develop organically, some need to be Pushed, Buckley is one of the organic types, he will be better served sticking around the 1st team for now as I think it will be an issue placing him sonewhere that's suits all parties
  8. Chapman is showing he isn't happy by his body language but sulking in football will just get you pushed further down the pecking order I don't think there are any cliques as such more circumstance has led to splits, in the group in fact the U23s that contained Tomlinson, Hardcastle, Travis, Nuttall JRC, Platt, Butterworth, Mols, Grayson Fisher, Buckley etc was very much that way, if you didn't fit in it was made clear you knew your place and this makes sure there is a pecking order and everyone then knows there place, Hardcastle was captain and he wasn't afraid of bollicking the others when needed during or after games You will find the 1st team players that play down tend to stick together as do the lads who train with the 1st team and play, for the 23s, so basically at the minute there are 3 groups in the 23s changing room at any one time This leads to the U23s no longer being a settled team, players come down from the 1st team for game time, you then have players coming back from injury from the 1st team, you also have the players who train with the 1st team every day who are classed more as 23s/1st team squad who come into the side, pushing out lads who train day in day out with the 23s add to this different changing rooms during the week (which has only been implemented this season) you have half in one room and half in another, where as before when the players I mentioned above were there when they won the league they were all together, in one room during the week I also know there were arguments and even scraps during this time between them, there was a lot of big characters and that carried them through At the minute Mols is the captain and that is because he is the most experienced player at this level nothing more and due to injuries to Doyle and Grayson bar JRC, who is with the 1st team every day so he isn't considered for the arm band due to not being around these players day in day out, Mols isn't a Hardcastle far from it and the characters aren't there at the minute, add to this a change of coach with different ideas, a new batch of young players pushing on and is it any surprise performances and games have been disjointed Losing Grayson and Doyle from the heart of the defense hasn't helped as the players coming in aren't at that standard or experience yet Take the last 3 games for example Everton (LSC) 1st half unplayable 2nd half a considerable drop in levels nearly let Everton back in Middlesbrough (PLC) 1st half shocking lucky to go in 1-0 down, 2nd half back in it and a far better level of performance and win Hertha (PLIC) 1st half comfortable unlucky not to be ahead at half time 2nd half absolutely shocking ending in loss The contrast and inconsistency is there for all to see, the constant changing of players in and out it doesn't allow for the 23s to build momentum as a team, as was the case previously IMO we will see a lot more of these performances as the season wears on, sometimes the 23s are training with 5 players as there isn't enough 23s as such, that can't be good for moral or consistency within this group and this is why it's folly to judge any player on the odd game, Mowbray hit the nail on the head when he said he judges players more in training than playing for u23s and I can see why, don't get me wrong it's nice to see the 23s rip it up but a narrow defeat isn't the be all and end all when it comes to certain players especially as circumstances don't lend to providing that consistent environment which is sometimes needed
  9. You can't judge players on one bad game, and it wasn't one bad game it was one bad half (2nd half) Butterworth and Rankin-Costello have had plenty of decent games to be allowed the odd poor performance, the reason they were so poor 2nd half was due to Rovers losing control of the middle of the park and players making poor decisions, them basically being starved of the ball, they start to go looking for the ball and it then leads to loss of shape and frustration and with frustration comes poor decision making so the cycle continues Rankin-Costello I thought was average rather than poor he put some decent balls in especially in the 1st half which on another day might have been finished, he also was one of the few players who made their keeper make a save with a shot on target and there wasn't many granted Butterworth, was below par without doubt, he is coming back from a long lay off though so it shouldn't be a surprise he isn't at full tilt yet, he does need to work on his defensive game though as if he's going to be lined up to play as a 10 he needs to understand that he has defensive duties which include making a 3 in the middle when needed and working harder out of possesion, free roles for Number 10s are a thing of the past
  10. Well last night was just one of those nights, to many not at the levels they know they can produce The 1st half Rovers were well on top without really producing many good opportunities, they played a little more direct than usual and picked up a lot of 2nd balls which kept them on the front foot The 2nd half was totally different for some reason they started to try to play out from the back and added to the Germans high press and work rate out of possession this had a real detrimental affect on Rovers display, the Germans started to win a lot of 2nd balls and the 3 in the middle of the park (Mols Davenport and Butterworth even though he played as a 10 he still has responsibilities defensively and he didn't do them) couldn't grab the game back Barr tried JRC in there at one point to try and get a foot hold but he would have been better served switching Butterworth and JRC rather than Mols as it affected the shape and narrowed Rovers even more Rovers never got the ball to the better creators 2nd half at all as they lost control of the middle of the park Then the desire and work rate out of possession paid off for the Germans as Mols got caught on the ball not for the 1st time in a dangerous area and it was game over There were a few who looked very frustrated figures towards the end with both Butterworth and JRC arguing with the linesman and referee and then getting involved off the ball with the Germans as it boiled over at the end, this summed up Rovers in a nutshell 2nd half, Frustrated, very frustrated This Hertha side play in the German League 3rd division, they play mens football week in week out and that showed in the 2nd half they basically out manned Rovers and showed a little more nounce in certain areas One thing I will add is this and I'm not basing this on last night this is over the last 7-8 games I've seen, Chapman needs sitting down and someone needs to explain to him that football is a team game and not about individuals, his desicion making is shocking, he takes the wrong option 99% of the time which for all the flicks and tricks makes him a very poor player in my eyes, and his game understanding is zero, for him to have any chance of making the 1st team he needs to make a lot of changes understand what's required from him defensively and sometimes do the simple thing, but I won't hold my breath and I can understand fully why Mowbray has said recently the things he has about Chapman
  11. Butterworth isn't bothered about 1st team players he knows technically the majority can't lace his boots, he also has an edge about him which is good to see the difference in attitude came when we got the right players in the right areas after the so called 1st team players left the pitch, it also helps when you get a centre forward on the pitch who can hold a ball up (Vale) and doesn't need half a dozen touches to get it under control as seen with Butterworth goal after Vale showed great feet One thing I will say about u23s football at the highest level is that if you don't have a decent touch/technical game you will get found out and can be made to look a mug this is why I enjoy watching u23s football as every team in Premier League 2 play the right way and every team has some highly talented youngsters for me this is why the 1st half was so poor as we didn't play the way we normally would to accommodate inferior technical players there was no rhythm and we were very disjointed for me, as the 2 up front couldn't trap a bag of cement, and just wanted it lumped long in the channels this has a knock on throughout the team and disrupts it and it definately effected Butterworth and Mols performances Mols was shocking 1st half, didn't look interested due to this, but he was excellent 2nd half and led by example
  12. Davenport does a lot of work which goes unnoticed he is your typical holding midfield player sits in the middle of the park, very rarely gets in front of the ball and keeps it simple, if you're not noticing him sometimes isn't a bad thing if you catch my drift Hilton is a decent keeper made some outstanding saves and kept Rovers in the game without him it could have been game over after 60mins JRC once again showed his versatility by playing in 3 positions tonight, starting at right back then wide right and then wide left, he showed his quality at times late on and even from right back provided Rovers 1st real strike at goal tipped round the post by their keeper, he works hard and trys to lead by example even when not at his best Another player who I think deserves a mention is Sam Barnes his loan spell at Marine looks to have done him the world of good, he's comfortable on the ball and is quite quick, one to watch along with Issac Whitehall as the season progresses
  13. He's in the match day squad but will be there in case of illness or injury in the warm up etc, so sat in the stands basically
  14. Issac Whitehall came on at right back looks a prospect and only 17, good size good feet and athletic, one to watch IMO
  15. Mowbray is not the right man to bring the ypung players through, he doesn't have the back bone to give any young player an extended run in he team, he has talked the talk with regards many of them but he doesn't walk the walk I have heard that there is a couple or so of the higher rated youngsters that are looking for a way out as they feel they have been led up the garden path a little and are at a stage in their careers where 1st team football is now so important for their future development It's unlikely the players out on loan at present are unlikely to get an opportunity either as the pathway isn't there for them either January will see a few go on loan, with this most of them will go into the last knockings of their contracts and with no intension of extending them as they see no pathway into the 1st team and once out on loan they do seem to become the forgotten men Also to make any money on these young players would mean giving them a decent run in the 1st team that won't happen so they will walk for minimal amounts and once again with no benifit to Rovers in any way, the academy isn't being used in the correct way as it stands its failing and this is due to what happens at 1st team level and until this changes young players will leave for next to nothing as they have in the past When was the last time Rovers picked up any decent money for an academy player? Phil Jones and then David Raya This season should have seen at least 3 decent young players fully integrated into the 1st team but hasn't and its disappointing, the promotion of Damien Johnson should have seen this transition for the young players made seemless but it hasn't, so his role should be questioned also, does he have any input? I Highley doubt it
  16. I think Mowbray wants out, he won't walk no payout, he wants to be Pushed, why continually pick under performers he wants the bullet If he doesn't he must have mental problems
  17. January will be interesting, young lads will be off, they're will be plenty of interest, they can't afford to hang around any longer and continually be over looked for under performing players who keep their places no matter what type of lack luster performances they churn out What's the point of having a Cat 1 academy might as well close it down and use the money elsewhere
  18. Walton Bennett Nyambe Tosin Williams Armstrong Holtby Johnson Downing Dack Gallagher Subs Luitwiler Evans Buckley Bell Graham Travis Rothwell
  19. For what it's worth Mowbray could do himself no harm by trying the younger lads now It may even buy him a little more time and it could even save him his job, Louis Vangal (sp) when at united gave many a young player their debuts, he did this not because they were all ready but because he knew it would give him time with the fans, as he knew united were going through a period of transition, Ole is also doing it now as is Lampard at Chelsea (due to transfer ban) fans love nothing more than seeing "one of their own" out there, if Mowbray has got any sense left at all he might want to try it He should look to give extended game time to Buckley, JRC, Butterworth, Rothwell, Travis, Nyambe now, results may or may not improve but I will gaurentee effort and desire to fight for the badge will and it will show there is a plan moving forward At the minute there looks like no forward thinking it looks like Rovers are stumbling into one game after the other and hoping for the best, that won't win you football matches, if Mowbray has an ounce of being a half decent coach left he will start to disgard the over paid under performing in his squad from now and try the young lads, they may shock a few, or they may come unstuck, but they will give their all for the club and will fight to the end
  20. He won't be a big player apart from being tall, he will never be a regular for City full stop, all City are doing with him is pushing up his value by sending him out on loan so when the time comes to cash in he will have played going on 100 games in the championship, so when it comes to selling they will look to pick up a few million for him, it's all about the business
  21. No legs in the team no desire and to many players over 30 and the games look like catching up with them Get the Young lads in the best performances of pre season were with the youngsters in the team, get Rankin-Costello, Buckley and Butterworth in with Trav, Rothwell Nyambe and Tosin the youngsters are hungry and athletic they are fucking young there's the clue young, which equals energy and enthusiasm they are also the better technical players at the club, I would keep Dack and Williams in with Lenihan when fit, the rest can make up the numbers when required With Mowbray it looks to me like the senior pros are calling the shots and if he doesn't grow some bollocks they will finish him, Also I would like to know how much influence Venus and Lowe have on team selection etc Lowe especially is a poor coach I have witnessed it at youth level and its not great, (u18s he was useless and couldn't get a tune out of the team, then Brian Carey came in and the difference was massive and from being bottom they finished mid table) Johnson needs more involvement and influence for me
  22. Here's his 2n Here's his 2nd good finish on his left foot
  23. Rankin Costello made his u21s debut (as it was then) at 16, by the time he was 17 he was established in the u21s and playing in the big games (fa youth Cup etc reaching semi finals) for the 18s also Butterworth made his debut for the U23s (as it is now) at 17 and then became a main stay (also playing for the 18s in big games making it to quarters of youth Cup) Buckley made his way into the 23s more naturally wasn't pushed up early just developed along the way I can't see anyone in the current 18s team doing what Rankin Costello did with u23s at the minute, now I'm not taking anything away from the 18s players, far from it, but what it does say is the 23s is in a far better shape than it has been for a long time very rarely do you see overage players with the 23s now (only allowing game time after injury or to give game time to keep them ticking over) that wasn't always the case (Simon Eastwood, Anton Forrester and Dean Rittenberg) spring to mind who were all regulars at that level, with no chance of making the 1st team So with that in mind it's harder than it's been for a while for a young player to make big leaps now, that tells me something is being done right behind the scenes with the academy and it started with Eric Kinder who had a big impact on the academy when he took over from Phil Cannon and that has been carried on by Stuart Jones and his staff
