  1. I went to see Super 8 and The Guard last week and enjoyed both of them. Super 8 was really good and reminded me of the movies from my childhood, where kids got up to adventures, lived in tree houses and rode around on BMXs. It was very entertaining and had some funny moments that you associate with Speilberg's child based movies. The Guard is also very funny, but I would say that you would have to be Irish to really get the sense of humour behind the movie. I'm looking forward to seeing The Inbetweeners movie, Planet Of The Apes and Conan!
  2. Has anyone else heard of a band called The Weeknd (and that's not a misspelling)? I heard one of their tracks late one Sunday night on Radio 1 and have been liking them ever since. It's a mix of R'N'B, Dubstep and Indie. They sound great IMO.
  3. I've recently read a book called The Corner, by the creators of The Wire. It's one of the best books I've ever read. It's an extremely depressing story of one real year in the projects of Baltimore and the drug problem that has crippled the city and can be applied to every city across the U.S. It's a fantastic book and I would recommend it to anyone. I'm currently reading Dennis Lehane's book The Given Day which is a captivating story of the Boston Polic force post World War 1 and the battle against communist insurgents that were looking to tear the country apart. It's another great story from Lehane.
  4. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this guy next season. He, like Formica joined half way through the season, when we were struggling at the wrong end of the table and as such got limited playing time. However I think we can all agree that we saw some nice glimpses from him and hopefully next season, when we start from a clean slate, he (and Formica) can get some games and show what they can do. We've been crying out for creativity in the team for years and now we have the likes of Rochina, Formica, to go with Olsson and Hoilett, along with anyone else we sign in the summer, which is very exciting.
  5. I never saw About Schmidt, but I know it got good reviews. I saw The Kings Speech last night and really enjoyed it. I thought that Colin Firth and Jeffrey Rush put in good performances. I was surprised at how funny it was too. A really good show, but I'm not sure it deserves all the acclaim it's been getting.
  6. I've seen a couple of good movies recently. Sofia Coppola's new indie movie Somewhere is a brilliant movie. It stars Stephen Dorff, as a Hollywood actor who is emotionally dead from the vacant world he lives in. His daughter is the only thing of worth and their relationship is brilliantly captured. This is a very understated movie and you have to be a movie fan to really enjoy it. There are a couple of scenes, where nothing happens, as Dorff just sits in his empty world, which some people would just find boring. I also went to see The Way Back during the week, starring Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell and Saoirse Ronan. It's about people who escape a Siberian work camp during WW2 and trek all the way to India to escape communism. The cinematography is great and it's a good story, however there are parts where the film drags. Another good movie is one with Robert DeNiro, Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockford and Drew Barrymore called Everyone's Fine. I watched it online and really enjoyed it. Robert DeNiro is widower, who has never kept in close contact with his children. When they all cancel on coming to see him for a family reunion, he sets out to travel across America to see them all. It won't be winning any Oscars, but it was a nice movie, with some good scenes. Thinking of going to the King's Speech tonight.
  7. Went to see Unstoppable last night. It nearly slipped off the radar before I got a chance to see it. It was a great. Nothing complicated, just a good watchable movie.
  8. It was on a few weeks ago on Channel 4 I think. An absolute classic. I watched some of Blade last night and that's another great movie. I went to see Jackass 3D the other night and it is hilarious. It is exactly what you expect it to be and that's great.
  9. I agree with everything you've said. I saw it tonight and thought that there were some good set pieces and good ideas, but didn't really grasp what the movie really stood for. As you say it was a bit of mish-mash of Independence Day and World Of The Worlds, without being one or the other. It's not the worst movie I've seen and even though I thought that the trailer looked cracker, I was a bit skeptical when I found out that the directors directed Aliens v Predators Requiem. With a bit more thought it could have been a lot better. It will be interesting to see if a sequel will indeed be made. Following on from this movie looks the business.
  10. I've seen quite a few movies over the past few weeks, some brilliant, some good and some ok. I saw Devil a few weeks back and it was quite enjoyable. It's nowhere near as good as the other stuff that M. Night Shyamalan has done (he wrote this), but it's still a very good story with some tense moments in it. I find movies where the idea of the devil is actual visualised far more disturbing than any shock horror stuff that's out there. Another good movie is Buried. It's an uncomfortable watch at times and you feel pretty claustrophobic at times. It's a good idea and it works well. There are a few truly awful moments in it, especially when he is on the phone to his work. It won't be everyone's cup of tea mind you, particularly if you are easily pleased when it comes to movies. Last week I saw a docu-movie called Restrepo, about marines in Afghanistan. It's gets up-close and intimate with some of the soldiers and what they experience, more so than any other documentary like it. However I came out of it feeling pretty underwhelmed and felt like it was something I could have watched on TV. Last night I went to see The Town, which is a cracking movie and one that most people should enjoy. The way it depicts the hard edge of Boston and the people in it, is well done. It is just a cop/criminal thriller, but it is done very well. Moreover, you get to see what a superstar Mad Men's Jon Hamm can become. Earlier I went to see the opening night of The Social Network, which I thought was brilliant. Like The Town, it's one of the best movies I've seen for a while. You get a real idea of how desperate a socially awkward Mark Zuckerberg was to be accepted into Harvard's elite clubs and fraternities and how the idea of creating something like facebook would allow for his admittance into them. The dialogue never stops for the full 130 minutes, which gives the movie an intensity that is reflective of what you would have imagined the time creating and coding facebook would have been like and the bitter aftermath as a number of different parties lay claim to it's inception. This is a must see in my opinion.
  11. I've been listening to John Mayer's most recent album, Battle Studies. It's another exceptional piece of work. His song Heartbreak Warfare is one of the best I've heard in while. Two other songs of his that I've been loving over the past few months are off his live in L.A album, Where The Light Is. In Your Atmosphere and his cover of Tom Petty's Free Fallin' are just great.
  12. I went to see The Last Exorcism last night and really enjoyed it. It's very atmospheric, quite tense in parts and the end is a little disturbing! I find movies that deal with demonic possession and exorcism far more uncomfortable than a standard gore fest like Hostel, because it's more realistic and possible.
  13. Was thinking of seeing this myself. Empire gave it a good review and so have you! I watched The Joneses the other night. It's enjoyable enough, with loopholes galore, but Demi Moore and Amber Heard look great so that made up for it!
  14. I'm loving Mumford & Sons at the moment. And for any hard rock / metal fans out there, I downloaded the latest Breaking Benjamin album Dear Agony the other night and it's pretty sweet. Not as good as Phobia though, which was just awesome.
  15. It's the worst movie I've seen in a long time. It's right up their with Spawn, 20,000 BC and The Musketeer as one of the worst movies I've seen.
  16. Rennes can afford to buy players. They just choose to develop their own players. I'm sure it must be necessary for the likes of Nancy, Lorient or Sochaux to produce their own players as they don't have the budgets to buy a number of players.
  17. I'm currently in France on my holidays. I went and saw Rennes play Lille last night on the opening game of the Ligue 1 season. It was a really good game, which ended 1-1. I paid €12 to get in. There's no way you be paying that for the Premiership. Asamoah Gyan came on for Rennes and should have won it for them in injury time when he missed an absolute sitter; totally unmarked in the box, about five yards out and he heads the ball wide. Rennes gave a debut to another one of their promising youngsters, from what is fast becoming one the elite youth academies about. He was called Yacine Brahimi and he is a real star in the making. Five of Rennes starting 11 all graduated from the youth teams and it would have been six, had Yann M'Vila not be injured. Despite being owned by one of the richest men in the world, Rennes are totally committed to producing their own players and then bringing in one or two players in the summer to compliment the youngsters. If they were to win anything, it makes it all the sweeter in the knowledge that they have produced the players. I'm glad to see that we are doing the same thing and have some very good young players making an impact on the first team.
  18. I saw the A-Team over the weekend. It's one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in some time. It really is very good. There were a one or two times that I didn't quite get what was going on, mainly because I couldn't make out what they were saying. But apart from that it's a great show and I hope there are more to come!
  19. I though Inception was great. There were a few things that I didn't understand and I will need to watch it again to understand certain parts. But I thought that it was a great story, it looked fantastic and the final act was fascinating.
  20. I went to see Inception last night, but every single show was sold out! Going to go today and see it. I hope it lives up to the hype. I wasn't too bothered when I first saw the trailer, but it has slowly grown on me and all my friends have seen it and say it's amazing. I did see Toy Story 3 the other night and thought it was fantastic. The bit where the toddlers come in to play with the toys is one of the funniest things I've seen in ages.
  21. I went to see Predators last night and it was bloody great. It does what it says on the tin - big monsters hunting humans on a faraway planet. Brilliant! It's left open for sequels which should be great.
  22. I watched it last week and thought it was brilliant. I thought that it was a lot darker in some ways than the first one because of the face to face conversations with the devil, which I thought were brilliant and disturbing. While •REC was more of a horror movie, with more scars. I think that the premise of the movie is brilliant and is the best take on exorcism, possession and fighting the devil that I've seen. I can't wait for the third one!
