  1. I've got to agree with you. My opinion of Hughes has dropped significantly after his move to Man City. The things that he has said over the last few months made it clear that he still had work to do with Rovers, that he wanted to build upon their good league finishes and Cup semi finals and wasn't willing to let our best players leave because of what he could achieve with them if they stayed. To up and leave at the drop of a hat, only a few weeks after the season has finished leaves a sour taste in the mouth and makes me question the character of the man. I could understand him leaving for Chelsea, I wouldn't like it, but it would make more sense. For all the money that City have and he will be able to spend, I don't see them challenging the top four, and they will end up chasing 6th like the rest of us. He has done a good job for us and has taken us a long way, that's why it hurts so much that he has left. However after his decision to leave all of a sudden, to a team who will probably do little more than ourselves, just to match his sudden high ambitions, I don't wish him well at all and hope that he fails miserably. Over the past few seasons we have seen how the grass isn't always greener elsewhere with Souness, Neill and Bellamy and I pray that this turns out to be the case with Hughes.
  2. It really cuts me that Hughes is off to City. If one of the top four clubs came calling, particularly Man United, then I could understand him wanting to leave. I wouldn't like it, but I could deal with it. However, I find it very hard to take the fact that is going to Manchester City. Yes they are a big club, with lots of money, but Sven, who took them from a relegation threatened team, to a top 10 finish and European football, still got the chop. How can Hughes not see that it will be almost impossible for City to accomplish the goals that this lunatic Shinawatra has set, no matter how much money he has to spend and he will have the same fate as Sven when they don't make it into the Champions League. I was reading an interesting article on the BBC website, where Dean Saunders was saying that Hughes would be better staying at Rovers and building on his reputation, than going to City and working under a very different structure, one which demands instant success and by not gaining it, not only will he be out of job, but his reputation will suffer. Saunders also talked about how when he went to Newcastle with Souness, he realised what a well run club Rovers is and that working under Shinawatra will be very difficult. Hughes should look to the likes of Souness and Bellamy and see that the grass isn't always greener and that by staying with Rovers, he can achieve the success that will no doubt take him to Old Trafford.
  3. I'd take him back. It would have to be a reasonable price though. Ever since he left Rovers he hasn't been quite the same. There were times under Mourinho where he was class, but other times it seemed that the strict tactics of the coach curb his attacking ability. As someone else pointed out, I wouldn't read too much into his performances at Newcastle, there is something about that club which makes you crap.
  4. There is an obvious dislike of Blackburn by the programme and some of its presenters. The coverage of or game last night was insulting, not because it was on last, but because it was on after Goal Of The Month and not a word was said about it. Whenever our games are talked about, they usually focus on the other team or how badly we played. Shearer loves nothing more than to have a go at Rovers. It's as if he is resentful of his time with us and his inability to reach the same heights with Newcastle.
  5. I've seen 10, 000 BC also. It's been one of the movies that I've been really looking forward to. It's a complete disaster.
  6. This is good news. He has proven himself to be a quality defender and is quality player to have in the squad. My first choice centre backs at the moment, if everyone were fit would be Ooijer and Samba. Andre has been much more reliable than Nelsen. A good bit of business.
  7. He should have been dropped a long time ago. But because of a lack of midfield options, he plays regularly and regularly disappoints. This must be another area of the team that Hughes will want to strengthen in the summer.
  8. I'm a X-Files fanatic. We've got the first four seasons and I've nearly watched the whole of the fourth one. It's great being able to see episodes that I missed when I was growing up. One of the scariest episodes ever is in season four, it's called 'Home' and it's about the family of inbreds (more like a documentary about Burnley really) called the Peacocks. It still scares the sh*t out of me. Anyway, it will be good to see a new X-Files movie, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have obviously put aside their differences to make it . Apparently this one has moved away from the whole alien conspiracy and is more like a monster horror movie, which should be awesome. Fight The Future was a great movie and I have every confidence that this can be too. Talking of Duchovny, I saw his new move Life After The Fire today. It's a really good movie. It's a bit like 21 Grams and Crash in it's look and feel, but not with the same crossover story lines. Benicio Del Toro portrayal as a junkie who cleans himself up is very convincing, as is the uneasy relationship between him and Halle Berry. I would highly recommend this one.
  9. I know that it is only February, but it is that good that it will be one of the movies of the year IMO. The likes of Batman, Indiana Jones, James Bond and Valkari are still to come, but I think that it will be able to stand up to any of those and any other hits that come out.
  10. I saw Cloverfield tonight. To say that it is one of the best movies of the year is an understatement. I saw the trailer for this movie about six months ago, long before people new about it and long before it even had a name and was excited about it then. It lived up to my expectations and more. I will write more about it later, but for now, I will just say that it is truly brilliant.
  11. Has anyone seen those commercials on Sky Sports channels, advertising the sporting events which they will be showing this year? There is a famous piece of classical music that goes with it. Does anyone know what it is called so I can download it? It is really pretty epic.
  12. That thing certainly looks like something which could shred New York. I can't wait for Clover Field. Saw the trailer about four months ago, before it had a name, and I was drooling over it.
  13. I Am Legend was such an amazing book that you have to question why so much of it was changed. I don't know about other people but the scariest thing I found with the book was the sense of total loneliness and isolation that the author created. I didn't get this feeling from the movie. I thought that there were flaws, there was no need to tamper with the vampire side of the story and this would have solved the problem of dodgy CGI and the part with Bob Marley was rather hard to watch. Overall, I thought that it was a good adaptation of the book, but like so many other cases when you look forward to books being made into movies and you see trailers for what you think will be classic films, they could be better. I went and saw The Kite Runner last night. I hadn't the book before going although members of my family had and told me what an amazing, but also heartbreaking book it is. After watching I don't think I could face the book, because it is without doubt one of the saddest movies I've seen and the book is supposed to be worse! The part where Amir Jan throws pomegranates on Hassan's tunic is devastating. A very good movie indeed, one that feels longer than two hours, but that is a positive.
  14. If the movie version of I Am Legend is anything like the book, then it will be spectacular. The trailer certainly makes it seem like the movie will be a hit. The only other movie that I'm really dying to see is Cloverfield. This movie from A.J. Abrams is so secret that for a long time it was only known as 1.18.08; the release date. This could be somthing special. http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/cl...d/medium_2.html http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/cl...eld/medium.html
  15. Reading some of the stuff on here is quite staggering. Not even a week after England had their asses handed to them by the Croatians, we see people coming out with daft comments about talent, players and who the better team is. The simple fact of the matter is that England are a second rate international side. Yes, they have a lot of big name players, who performances in the Premiership would make you think that they could perform on the international stage, but this isn't the case. The style of the Premiership allows players like Lampard and Gerrard to perform to their best, but international football as we all know is different game and England's best find it very hard to come up to the levels of teams like Croatia. There are a number of players on the Croatian team that you could argue would get into the England side like Stipe Pletikosa, Dario Simic, Vedran Corluka, Dario Srna, Luka Modric and Niko Kranjcar. They are all quality players, who even though don't live the celebrity lifestyle of their English counterparts, showed last week what talented players they are. They perform both in their domestic leagues and at international level and in this case have the talent and ability to embarrass England at Wembley. A top European manager could improve England's fortunes, but it could take a while for players to get to the levels of the bigger nations in their style of play, when they have been playing such agricultural football for so long. They have a decent group for the World Cup, but for some people to dismiss Croatia so soon after a drubbing and predict an easy ride after such an abject qualifying campaign smacks of arrogance and over confidence, which is one of the main factors which has lead to the recent demise in English football. The sooner that players, coaches and fans accept that England are a long way off the genuine big boys of world football, the sooner they can set about trying to match them and get to the level that they believe they should be.
  16. I was stunned when I heard people during the game last night refer to some newspaper article which said that none of the Croatian players would get into the England team. Even then, when England had had a miserable campaign and were only in the position where they could qualify, because Israel had done them a favour, were people making negative comparisons about a team that was top of the group. After last nights performance, where Croatia shredded England, there would be very few English players you would say deserved to be in the Croatian side. England have been a very poor team for some time now and even though they have big name players, who perform brilliantly in the Premiership, they don't have the technical or tactical abilities of other countries and this costs them dearly at the highest level. Last night some of the play by the likes of Dario Srna, Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Ivica Olic and Vedran Corluka was quite outstanding. No, they aren't the same big names as England have, but my word they perform to such a higher level. As one of the commentators said last night, that was Croatia playing when they had nothing to play for, imagine what they would be like if they needed to win. When you hear people say that England will be missed at Euro 2008, I can't see why they would want to see a team that was so awful last night and has been so bad for so long play with the best teams in Europe. England were thrown the lifeline which their performances haven't deserved, and yet, when they are at home, against a team of 'players that couldn't get into the England side', they play like that. The idea that they will be missed by anyone apart from their own loyal fans is laughable. As so many of you have been saying on here for so long, England are a big name with famous players, but they aren't a major team.
  17. McCarthy was totally pathetic yesterday. It just seemed like he wasn't interested. Granted that he didn't get much service, but when he did get on the ball, he either wasted it with an attempted fancy flick or with a pure touch. I know that his job is to score goals and if he has another season like last year then I will be happy, but when he plays like that, especially against Chelsea, it can irritate the fans.
  18. He is playing well at the moment and even though I was totally against him coming back, he is slowly changing my mind. As long as he stays fit and plays well then I will be happy. Long may it continue.
  19. Fair point. On paper they do have good players, but in reality they are a poor team and have been for a number of years.
  20. Eddie, I don't know what England team you've been watching for the past couple of years, but to say that the likes of Russia, Croatia and even Israel aren't good enough compared to England, smacks of not only arrogance but a lack of football knowledge. Yes we all know what quality players England have, I for one have been beating that drum for a long time. If they could get it right, then they would be able to match the top countries more often. But how with the way that they have played past couple of years as a team, can think that they are better than these teams at the moment? Until England actually put in a couple of even half decent performances, instead of the uninspiring crap that they have played since the World Cup and even before, England are still and ordinary team. It's all very well talking a good game and talking about the players they have on paper, but if England would play with passion, spirit, high tempo and for the full 90 minutes like they are always banging on about, more often, then people might take your arguments more seriously. There's nothing wrong with supporting your country, it's what you should do, but when you over-hype them into something there not, at the expense of other countries with equal or higher standing, then you tend to get this sort of reaction from people.
  21. Maybe not as many superior players on paper, but as a team, there are many countries who are superior to England at the moment, France and Italy included.
  22. I saw the interview on Skysports News and it didn't fill me with confidence that he will be with us next season. He didn't say that he wanted to stay with us and the only reason he would leave would be if the club wanted to sell him.
  23. Obviously any chance of a transfer is far from being completed, but the thing which upsets me most is how players backtrack on what they say. It was only a couple of days ago that he was saying that he wanted to stay at Rovers and the only way he would leave would be if they sold him. Now, he's talking about how he would like to move to a team in the Champions League, even though he knew we wouldn't be playing in it. This is what annoys me the most.
  24. One thing is for sure, if we were to sell him, we could easily ask £15-20 million for him, considering the amount of goals he has scored and what other players, who are less talented are being priced at.
