You don't need to wait for another 8 games , Speeeeeeeeedie , to conclude that the first two games were disappointing - to say the least - and this was largely due to the manager's decisions. Correct to say that Clements free kick , or D'Urso's corruption, aren't down to Souey (well not directly !) but a total of 90 minutes out of 180 have effectivlely been wasted . Cataloguing the number of mistakes in terms of selection and positional play would make for a post of a length that would make AESF blanche so let's just look at the ones that you allude to in your final paragraph - an unfit De Pedro taking to the pitch , Flitcroft and Matteo not only on the pitch but out of position , and the ne'er do well Yorke starting ahead not only of the enthusiastic , impressive Dickov , but also ahead of Gallagher who always livens things up and who , inexplicably, hasn't featured at all yet. And why "save" Dickov for the last 30 minutes when surely you should start with your best 11....Madness I call it , madness...

That thought sometimes occurs to me when I see these "controversial" decisions made . A better theory is that it's a case of egotism , an average bloke wanting to see his name in bold print on the back pages of the papers . A couple of minutes fame even if it is for displaying gross incompetence might be considered worth it for a saddo like D'Urso .

Chosing Jones , who was the first keeper I remember in the famous shirt , I'm afraid , is a triumph of nolstalgia over realism . Great keeper he undoubtedly was , very steady , but Friedel has performed at the very highest level - and in many observers' eyes was the best keeper at the world cup . Flowers IMHO was not as consistent as Brad and not even as technically competent . Let's remember that Friedel didn't always have a top flight team in front of him ; in many cases last season he hardly had a defence to speak of . And yet his performances were still of a high standard . It has to be Brad .

There's hardly been any mention of Tugay not starting the game , but I'm willing to bet that when Megson saw the line up he was delighted that Rovers were being so stupidly unambitious and negative - all the more chance that his bunch of mediocrities could steal something from the game . And that's how it worked out . What the hell is Souness doing sending out a team without our most creative and enthusiastic player and instead fielding the woeful Emerton and the unfit De Pedro ? I'm beginning to think that our manager really does believe that we are at the level of the West Broms of this world and that survival itself is all that we're capable of . Personally I'm convinced that we can quite comfortably finish mid table at least , so how the man who created the team can act so negatively is bewildering . It seems no strategic lessons have been learnt in the summer . Hopefully Souey will take a crash course before next Saturday !

Nothing wrong with that Jan. Anybody who has spent a long time supporting a club will have have gone through periods when they have carried on attending whilst having little or no confidence in the manager and/or players . The club is above all these details....

I rang up the ticket office at the weekend and the girl said that one batch had yet to be sent out - she blamed the situation on Austria ! Presumably the cards are being made there .....All tickets , apparently, will be received by the end of this week.....

You're probably right , Joey . That's what we're all p'd off with . The bottom line is , with a real top class manager - and not a con man like Sven (remember his worthless promises to us ) - we could now be either Euro champs or World champs . Sven should go , and anyone at the FA who had anything to do with that contract offer should go as well . Let's start again at the beginning. Souness must go as well..

The press mounted a vigorous campaign for Cloughie but they were ignored as usual. Cloughie was certainly at his most controversial at that time but weren't his "peak years" 1978-79 when Nottingham Forest won the European Cup in successive seasons? Cloughie was the top manager in Britain for years on end . Having took an average old second division team, Derby, to the Championship in 1972 , he then did exactly the same with Forest culminating in the Europe triumphs of '79 and '80 . Where would Leeds be today if they had kept him? Where would England be if he'd have sorted out the FA as he so often threatened ? Maybe they wouldn't be ruled today by the kind of duffers who were stupid enough to offer Ericcson a massive long term contract which they can barely afford to rid themselves of.
