Jack Hixon IIRC. He also sent a certain Alan Shearer to Southampton Ralph Coates, Dave Thomas, Ray Hankin and many, many more. All top players. What were Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough doing missing players like that? Bolton turned down Alan Ball for being too small too. Rovers rejected Tony Green and Tommy Hutchison, two top Scots -

No one "buys" the league though it's virtually impossible to win the league without money. The barbs thrown at Rovers were mainly lazy journalists who didn't like having to write about what they perceived as a "small" club, and it stuck. It was nonsense then and it's nonsense now and we were never given the credit we deserved. -
Well played Wales. Good fightback after a poor first half. It's great to see them playing in the finals after 64 years. Top players like Rush, Hughes and Giggs never made it to the WC but Bale is a worthy successor to the great John Charles

Fair comment. Pushing, pulling and shoving goes on all the time in penalty area. Imagine a semi-final 0-0 with 5 minutes to go and the referee gives a penalty for that.

Iran were expected to give England a difficult game but they were poor today. England exceeded expectations Ramsbottom United are a decent Northern Prem outfit, not a "pub side" Carry on trolling
-
It was a training game Ramsbottom United would give Iran a game

Sound off. I can’t stand Micah Richards for the next 4 weeks

A whole country? One World Cup win and one Euro final. How does that compare to our European neighbours and big rivals - Germany, France, Spain and Italy? We're supposed to be a leading football nation but the reality is we aren't. We're worse than the Netherlands and the best you can say is we are on a par with the likes of Denmark and Greece. You hope (always hope) England do well but you have to say it's highly unlikely
-
Sterling's done nothing this season to warrant being first choice. England will be favourites to win according to the fans but it always pays to be contrarian. Stick a little bet on England 1 Iran 1
-
No third world workers died or their human or employments rights abused in the construction of these stadia What David Beckham won't be saying as he walks away with a £10m cheque from the Qataris to promote the tournament

Outliers in a catalogue of failure, which you well know
-
Fans split between the ones with their heads in the clouds who think England will win it and the realists who have seen it all before and know that anything involving England sport (football, cricket, rugby etc) will inevitably end in disappointment. Qatar is a tainted World Cup, it is a stain on football and a shadow of what used to be a great tournament, and the Fifa leader's ridiculous statement this week has made it worse. I'll watch England struggle as usual but once we go out I won't watch any of the other games
-
I'll quote you on that if you don't mind
-
Why do England fans post this sort of stuff when England's history is one of failures and disappointment? Iran have won 17 of their past 21 games, and Wales and the US will be difficult opponents. None of the games will be easy and if England don't play well they will lose
-
Probably, based on long bitter experience. Let's be honest, it was a big surprise when they did. The non-show against an Italy side that subsequently couldn't even qualify for the World Cup was predictable. There is a book by Simon Kuper on why England always lose - worth reading
-
England have injuries too and have been out of form for some time. There's nothing to suggest that this will be "our year".

Huge sympathy to you and your family. I had to deal with vascular dementia in our family. It's a vile disease that reduces someone you loved into a shell of a human being. All the best -
Qatar has banned beer from World Cup stadiums I've just read the "security" will be in the hands of Pakistani soldiers and Turkish anti-riot police Gay fans beware What a fun World Cup this is going to be

I would hope it's not you, because it's total nonsense and intended only to discredit Rovers. We've never been given respect for our achievement because of another old trope, that we somehow "bought the title". Walker saw the vast TV fortunes coming into the game and paid the players accordingly. He was ahead of his time
