The FA Cup certainly drew bigger crowds than league games back in the day. In the 1952 run to the semi final, I well remember nicking off school (and happily taking the inevitable punishment), for a 3rd round replay against Forest. It was before floodlights, so an early Wednesday afternoon kick off, and the gate was around 35,000. The 4th round attracted a home gate of about 45,000 against Hull. That was followed by home games against West Brom and Burnley with full houses of over 50,000
