RoverCanada Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Aren't pretty much all of these Tier 7-8 loans essentially local loans too? I mean, do the players even move house? Given they're semi-pro outfits, isn't it simply a matter of joining their loan team for maybe 1-2 practices + 1-2 games a week for a month or so, while otherwise they're probably still staying at home and being coached by our Academy staff a couple days a week? I'm happy to be corrected! Can debate if it's a worthwhile level of football, but I don't see that much harm in a few games here and there against some adults. I'd be surprised if a few games with Bootle ever ruined a player's development... Frankly, in some cases, it may be more of a sign that the Academy player never had that much potential in the first place, so doing them a bit of a favour to see if they can at least hack it at the semi-pro level. Generally thinking there's a distinction between local youth loans and 'proper', 'character-building', 'learn pro football' loans (like O'Riordan, or what we would've hoped for with Olson's loan...) 1 Quote

I believe that is exactly the case, they can also still play for our U21s/U18s during this period too Quote

KentExile Posted November 15 Author Posted November 15 (edited) Starts this weekend for O'Riordan - lost 2-1 - played the full game - 5 Okoronkwo ghosted in to beat him for the opener. Some good forays forward when there was no other option on. Clearances and tackles aplenty. Fired over right at the very death Wood - lost 1-0 - played the full game Boggan - won 3-2 - replaced after 75 minutes whilst 2-1 up Wolsoncroft - lost 4-1 - played the full game On the bench Barrett - won 3-2 - remained on the bench throughout Edmondson - won 1-0 - Isuzu Cup, likely rested - came on after 64 minutes with the score at 0-0 Sergeant - drew 1-1 - came on at 60 minutes whilst 1-0 down - I caught the tail end of the commentary on their free online radio, they sounded impressed with Sergeant, although he was apparently offside quite a bit Not involved in matchday squad Olson & O'Grady-Macken - drew 0-0 Farkas - lost 1-0 Edited November 18 by KentExile 1 Quote
KentExile Posted November 18 Author Posted November 18 (edited) Farkas', Boggans & Sergeants games this evening have been called off. Edmondson is unsurprisingly not involved for Macclesfield in their Cheshire Seniors Cup game Edited November 18 by KentExile Quote
KentExile Posted November 21 Author Posted November 21 (edited) Starts this weekend for O'Riordan - drew 0-0 - played the full game - 7 - Solid as usual, especially in the air. Some early ventures forward with the ball put nothing too spectacular as he played a big part in keeping the back door shut Sergeant - won 1-0 - scored the goal - subbed off after 72 minutes On the bench Barrett - drew 2-2 - remained on the bench throughout Boggan - drew 2-2 - subbed on at 89 minutes with the score at 2-2 Wolsoncroft - drew 2-2 - remained on the bench throughout - was also involved for Rovers U21s at Watford on Friday night Not involved in matchday squad Olson & O'Grady-Macken - won 3-0 Farkas - drew 2-2 - was involved for Rovers U21s at Watford on Friday night Game postponed Edmondson - game called off before kick off - was named in the starting lineup TBA Wood - won 9-0 (I think this is a friendly reserve game so unsure if there will be much on this) Edited Saturday at 19:02 by KentExile 1 Quote

Again the question from me is why on earth he got a deal until June 27 with the option to another year after that. 1 Quote

I can only imagine it is preparation for him sitting on Rovers bench once we have been relegated & we have either Goddard or Michalski as first choice Quote

I would agree with that argument if he was the cheap 2nd/3rd choice travelling with the squad. But why extend his contract when we already have at least 5 (Toth, Pears, Michalski, Goddard, Honor) better options, & then loan him out anyway? It would have been cheaper to just release him at the end of his contract last summer. This one I put down to incompetence (or pre planned relegation) rather than penny pinching Edited 4 hours ago by KentExile Quote

Nobody is paying money for him, so as you say in your earlier post he will be then seen as an "experienced head" to sit on the bench in league one, whether we are there next season or the year after. 1 Quote

I edited my post as you replied, we are pretty much "aligned" in our thoughts 😉 1 Quote

He was awful when he first came and didn't get any better and if the coaches (or whoever) couldn't see that then they should pack up. We are stuck with him this season and next. He has no saleable value so to get rid we will have to pay him off. In terms of wasted money it's probably the top of the iceberg but it's all relative. 1 Quote

Unfortunately you're making the mistake of thinking that anyone cares whether he is any good or not. A cheap keeper that could potentially sit on the bench in league one when the next manufactured relegation happens, win win. You don't even have to register your keepers at that level. If he isnt good enough so what? Neither is 80% of this summers recruitment but nobody at the club bat an eyelid over that. Quote

There are at least four, possibly five ahead of him. There was a theory on here when it was previously discussed that he was signed to make up the numbers in training. Quote
