60 years ago today Rovers and Blackpool played the last ever Christmas Day fixture

Quote

"Christmas football was originally rooted in a wider tradition of communal entertainments," Professor Martin Johnes of Swansea University told BBC Sport.

"While for the Victorian middle class Christmas was a festival of the home, for the workers, who lived in cramped, overcrowded housing, getting out was often more important.

We lost the game, but which Rovers legend scored the last ever Christmas Day goal?

My dad was a joiner in Redlam who did business with Mike England.

He’s still the best centre half I’ve ever seen in the flesh. When the Rothmans Football Annual  published their best British 11 Mike was in it at centre half for several years and that was at the tail end of his career. He had it all ability wise. For a tall guy he had incredible leap. Not many tall guys jump very well. I still think his best days were at Rovers, when he went to Spurs they reigned in his attacking instincts.
