  7. The train is on a turntable that engines could use to change on to the various lines leading into the sheds. Further to the right was a tall concrete coal holder. Wagons full of coal would be hoisted up and the coal unloaded into the bunker. Train tenders would then park up underneath and coal dropped into them. There is a short you tube video called Lower Darwen 34D showing the site, but I can’t download it, sorry.
  8. The train engine sheds were further to the right of picture. There was a path that led up to them that was accessed from across the road from the Fernhurst pub. My grandad worked as a fitter there and I would go in the sheds during the school holidays on the pretence of wanting to talk with him, whilst really trying to climb up onto the engines and pretend to be driving them. It opened in 1937 and closed in February 1966, a casualty of the diesel era of rail travel.

  13. Great pics, Asia. Good to see my old primary school, St. Bartholomew’s, on the second pic, middle right, and the church next to it. Such a shame they were demolished. I was there 1955-62. I can see the houses of some of my friends from back then. I can also make out Hollin Bank Mission, near top left, where I also went every Sunday. Good times indeed.

  19. Sadly, the back streets around Kirby Rd and Wolseley St, where I lived, are strewn with litter and other rubbish making the area looking less than desirable. My mum would be devastated if she saw what it looked like now. Very sad.

  21. My mum lived in Kirby Rd until she married. I attended Hollin Bank Mission and Youth Club when we lived in the area during the late 1950’s and through the 60’s. Happy days.
