I remember going to Rovers v Charlton back in the 1960’s. It was a day just like this. The river at the back of the Riverside was a raging torrent. They kicked off at 3-00 but it wasn’t long before pools of standing water started to appear and passing the ball became a lottery. There was a really funny moment. Rovers were attacking the Darwen End and Mike Ferguson put in a great cross around the penalty spot. Alan Gilliver was playing up front and as he took an almighty swipe at the ball, a gust of wind came up a blew the ball away like a toy yacht. He missed the ball completely, did a pirouette, and fell into a large puddle. Everybody was laughing, even the ref. Anyway Charlton scored just before half time to make it 0-1 but the ref called it off at half time. I used to have the programme. It was pretty bedraggled and rain damaged and it was in my inside pocket ! -

To be more nefarious characters than the Venkies they’d have to be serving long jail sentences. -
I used to work with a bloke who’d been a tail gunner on Lancasters. He could tell some stories ! The one about how they got attacked by an ME 163 rocket fighter was really funny. He saw the speck in the distance and thought it was an ordinary prop powered aircraft so he just kept scanning for other aircraft. When he finally looked back again the ME was right on top of them. Luckily the German pilot didn’t fire, maybe his guns jammed. He was shaking for the rest of the day. Howard & Bulloughs we’re in a large conglomerant with Tweedale & Smalley of Rochdale and Platt Brothers of Oldham. When times got bad in the textile engineering game in early 1960’s one of them had to go and it was Tweedales. About 1,500 people lost their jobs. The other two followed them eventually. I played as a young player on Tweedale’s pitch. It was brilliant, they had first class facilities.

There’s no loyalty in football anymore. Sonny Liston once said “ You Can’t Put Friends In The Bank “, but it could have been said by anybody involved in modern day football. Blackburn Rovers is a stopping off club. You just stay here until something better comes along. -
