  1. The combination of a paper that has a page to fill every night about Rovers and a manager who doesn’t seem to edit his inner voice too much results in and endless supply of things to get upset about if one pays much attention to it. Personally, I don’t because, throughout his reign, there has been no tangible fallout from it. How many players we like have left because of it? How many wantaway stories do we read about? There was a lot of angst about Travis being sent to the salt mines after his Pompey sending off but I think he is twice the player now. None of us, me included, have any idea what’s involved in managing a squad of professional players who all think they should be in the team, whereas Mowbray has spent his entire working life in that environment. I’d be very surprised if many of them put more store in what gets printed in a tinpot local rag read by John Claret et al than what gets said in the workplace day in, day out. The case against him would be strengthened if Nyambe, Rothwell and Chapman had torn it up in their allotted minutes this season, and if he wasn’t always picking Travis and bringing Buckley on.
  2. Those financial geniuses who sold our club did so for less than Burnley make each year. The Trust’s £3 million a year cash injection would now be making a 12-fold return annually. It’s also staggering that Barnsley made more money than the champions of England
  3. Illustrating the health benefits of refereeing games without ever leaving the centre circle!
  4. Arbitro told me about it and pointed me toward an article about the book. Too keen to hang out with pupils rather than other teachers/priests, so I guess many of us didn’t meet his criteria. I bet at least some of the other priests knew.
  5. Only got my left and right mixed up Mark! ? Give the age and size of the St. Thomas’s ground, would they have been rubbing shoulders with Rovers and Olympic back in the early days? This is the game we love, not some fooking Chilean twat goes to some poncey Italian team, which was above the demise of past FA Cup winners Bury on the BBC website.
  6. I had a summer job one year at the cotton mill near the top of Moorgate working alongside Meccy’s uncle, who told me the game he made his debut his opponent spat in his face every time they came together.
  7. It must be me who has dementia as my dad is second from the right. He taught at St. Augustine’s for many years, nicknamed “Shiner” due to hair loss that has carried on down the generations. Toss Kennedy, should’ve recognized him, our 3rd form form teacher. And he should’ve given me better maths marks given he played in same team as my dad. Interesting how most young blokes back then look 45
  8. Going through my parents pictures and found this of my dad (front 2nd from left). He has dementia now - and I wonder how many of the others do looking at that ball - so can’t tell me anything about it. He did at one time play for Mill Hill St Peters so I was wondering if this was them. Anybody know? I wouldn’t have fancied being up against the guy with the ball!
  9. Personally I don’t think Dack contributes anything to our defensive solidity, no matter where he ends up. Being man-marked isn’t some unique hindrance to Dack, it’s a tactic as old as the game and he needs to show he can deal with it, either lose his man with clever movement or leave him on his arse, and score goals.
  10. Tough game to watch but some positives for me were: - Walton made some high catches Raya wouldn’t have got, plus a really smart save down low. - We got through Cunningham’s absence OK - Johnson. That shot near the end from Armstrong’s pass, he had run from the halfway line to get there. Not bad for an old fella in the 85th minute. The biggest negative for me is Dack, he hasn’t hurt anyone in five games. He does some good stuff but back in the centre circle. Given that the rest of the mids and forwards are picked to fit around his role, it’s time he stepped up. I’m beginning to think he’s been found out at this level.
  11. Evens Steven so far. Cardiff look like a team that was a division above us last year. Games like this we need Bradley Dack to show he belongs at that level and make a goal out of nothing. Thank God we don’t have David Raya though, Walton is looking much better.
  12. Although I think he would’ve started no matter who we were playing, I suspect it was more the ‘lanky’ than ‘striker attribute that made him a cert to start today
  13. I would guess in case Johnson has to go off and we need someone to leave his foot in. Only language Warnock understands. For the same reasons as in the last ten games, whatever they are - hardly a surprise.
  14. Of course he should. I think that’s what the manager expected to happen. May still do before the month is out.
  15. Good of you to worry about Venky’s money for them! He’s generous with contracts in general, maybe scarred by having hardly any contracted players when he started his last two jobs, Fans are fickle: from singing King of Ewood to make him unemployed inside a year when he’s exactly the same player.
  16. Exactly so. Also, there may have been more than one viable internal candidate. Successful promotions not only should test internal vs external standards but also be perceived as having been fair to all stakeholders.
  17. Paul Madeley started games in all outfield positions for Leeds, and that was when they were one of the best teams in the country!
  18. I’m torn in the LB issue. Any other opponent and it’d be criminal to move Williams back out wide, but we need as many good tall header-ers in our box as we can get. All together now, to the tune of “Nice one,Cyril”: ”Fuck off, Derrick; Fuck Off, Son; Fuck off Derrrrrriiiiiick; You’ve scuffed another one”. Could be the new “Beamo!”
  19. The Evans/Smallwood Mowbray-beating stick is so first half of last season. After Sheff Utd away, Travis played more games than both combined. Smallwood hasn’t made a league squad this season, Evans has just collected splinters, Buckley has been called on every time. And what happened to “if they are good enough, they are old enough” He’s replaced them with better players.
  20. You know we are heading for another Coyle or Kean when people start thinking our owners will make sound decisions.
  21. Same team for me. Whether or not Rothwell should’ve started the season on the bench, he hasn’t done enough for me in his time on the pitch this season to force his way back in. And I’d like to see Dackster do more of his good things in the box than 40-yards from goal. 2-0
  22. Funnily enough Tony, I’ve found myself thinking that Tosin/Lenihan/Williams could be a very effective back 3. But don’t ask me about the other 7! ?
  23. One in three with most penalties being taken by someone else will stand the test of time against many other forwards of the past. If we assume an extra 15 goals from penalties over three years he’d be getting pretty close to scoring one in two.
  24. But a strange way to review a game in which the manager’s decisions derided prior to kick off, actually paid off.
