  1. I think as a town and an unfashionable club, we are always an easy target. However, when we got promoted we provided an exciting team with some excellent individuals. How different things are today. If you weren't a supporter, could you say much that was positive about the club?
  2. We are absolutely awful at the moment and as Manchester Blue has recently stated, we are lambasted by the fans of many clubs who would like us to get relegated.
  3. Andrew Cole was definitely a big reason behind our winning the league cup and staying up the first season. He contributed hugely to Stead's success last season and we would not have stayed up without him.
  4. An earlier poster said this is the most important match of the season. I think the Norwich one is much more important.
  5. Hughes was on Radio Lancs saying it is a game we have to win.
  6. The back page of the LET on Saturday said Johnson is to get a new contract and it sounds as though Hughes rates him.
  7. Let's hope you are right.
  8. Jack Southworth has already been mentioned-122 goals in 133 matches.
  9. Eddie Quigley was the most expensive player in the country when PNE paid £26,000 for him in1949.He was a constant threat to teams because of his speed of thought and precision passing.Played deeper than most centre-forwards/inside-forwards.His goal scoring flourished under Carey's attacking approach. In 166 matches he scored 95 goals.
  10. James Brown played in the 80's.
  11. James Brown.5'5" and weighing less than 10 stone. But described as one of the best centre frowards to play for us.His delicate touch and devestating pace were capable of destroying the best of defences. He also often changed the team's format during a match.Captained 3 cup-winning teams, capped 5 times for England.Scred 28 goals in 36 matches.
  12. Johnny Byrom- replaced Pickering when George Jones, who we'd bought from Bury, didn't live up to expectations.Had one outstanding season in 64/65,but was sold to Bolton after we got relegated. He scored 113 goals for them, quite a number against us! For us he scored 64 in 146 matches. I remember him as someone who Bobby Moore couldn't handle. He always did well against him and nearly always scored.
  13. Roy Vernon-was one of the Carey chicks.Played 5 years in the first team and ended up following Carey to...........Everton. Described as a creative player, he scored 52 goals in 144 appearances. At Everton, where he won a championship medal, he became captain and was described as one of the best creative players of the early 60's. There he scored 101 goals in176 matches.
  14. Fred Pickering played in the Youth team that won the cup......as a left back.I think he was also captain. Jack Marshall was the manager in the early 60's and he found the best position for a number of players hence the name the media gave us: Marshall's misfits.I reckon he was converted around !962 and he ended up making 158 appearances, scoring 74 goals. Why was he sold to Everton???????????????? Not effectiveley replaced until 1992. Without doubt he did not achieve his full potential-he was "made" by Duggie and we were never the same without him.
  15. Murdoch is an American citizen.
  16. The Chelsea match was the first time I'd seen Mokeana. On the radio it sounded like he'd been quite dodgy at centre back and I thought he played well defensively.Flitty is struggling to play in the centre-last season he played well defensively on the right.Tugay played really well just behind the strikers.Whoever plays there will have to play with Savage.
  17. USA blue-Johnson has gone above Stead etc. Plan1- 4-5-1 Plan 2- 4-4-2 with Mokeana taken off and Johson on.
  18. What is the world coming to?Our strikers are woeful,we have little creativity, crowds are falling and now Jim is getting positive.
  19. 1864 Roverite-we had Johnson.
  20. We have scored 5 goals in the last 10 Premiership matches.
  21. Someone else commented on it and regretted it.
  22. I thought Savage should have been booked for a tackle on Duff in the second half. I seem to remember that Mourinho complained about Savage after they had played Birmingham.
  23. Both leagues are uncompetetive-the Premier league now has a 3rd serious competitor because of an enormous amount of cash that has been put into club that was on the point of collapse. They will probably win the league, but they won't have bought it. One difference between the 2 leagues is that,in theory, the clubs winning the Premiership have a better chance of winning the European championship than the Scottish champions. The most successful team in Scotland.......seems to depend when you want to look at the stats:more recently it has been Celtic.
  24. 3800-correct.
  25. Mourinho said a number of things on Sky Sport News-along the lines of: We can play in ugly matches as well as beautiful ones They thought we were kids from London and we could be intimidated. The fans were brilliant and could understand how we played together as a team. The lead we have now is the biggest we have ever had. I'm sure Jim or somebody else could do a better link to Sky etc. Mourinho was very critical of the way Rovers played and Hughes seemed somewhat surprised by the attack.
