Mark Hughes took a calculated gamble when he asked to speak to Man City, hoping that Chelsea would then make their minds up. You can check that with people close to him if you want.

He may not be going to his first choice club if he signs for City - although that won't be admitted obviously.

And if he ever dreamed of managing The Red Devils of Manchester, he's probably burned that bridge. I wish him well, we are better off for having him.

Could probably have been handled better though, as Rovers have been left looking a bit toothless.

Shearer & Newell dream team for me. Or Tony Mowbray for an outside bet.

Now we can put the Souness v Hughes arguments to bed. The facts speak for themselves; Souness (for all his faults) was a far more successful Rovers manager than Hughes was.

Don't start calling him. He did a good job but felt that he couldn't take it much further.

If Rovers slip next season - as he obviously feels they might do - then it is as well for him to leave and the club to find someone who is not worn out by their financial restrictions.

He may regret it in time, but so it goes.

so what if Rovers does exceptionally well under new management next season?werent you the one who said change is good?If whoever takes over Rovers, and does a better job than what Hughes is doing,at City next season i wonder who will be feeling sick, the fans of Rovers?i dont think so,Hughes at City likely...

who ever comes in at Rovers, will have the full backing of the board, have the stability and a good working environment, with no interferences,,Financial backing is the one lacking.

My take on this is,Hughes is potentially stepping onto loads of land mines, and the biggest one is that Thai maniac...

Agreed, but the inverse: Newell & Shearer. Newell has already managed, Shearer hasn't. Should things go t+ts up therefore, Newell will get the blame and Shearer might still go to Newcastle. Should Newell succeed; Shearer will get all the credit and go to Newcastle in any case.

I don't see how anyone can question what Hughes has done for the club. He turned us around from almost certain relegation to credible Uefa cup contenders in the league. Our domestic cup record is exceptional, several semi finals under him and the quarter finals this year in the league cup.

Hughes has done a great job for Rovers, i cannot see anyone saying otherwise.

You should have learned not to write things like that on here...now half of the messageboard is going to take that as a hint.

Are you hinting at something Mr. Nicko?....................

Hasn't he done rather well managing a team of Giraffes in Spain? I bet many of their goals were headers, although it would be easy to nutmeg them.

Whoops, Eddie's message wan't there as I was typing.

I believe Michael Laudrup is still available...

Does that mean he is not going to take over at Panathinaikos or has he asked for some time to think it over, whilst waiting for offers?

He did a good job last season, I'd be happy to see him at ewood.

Thought he'd gone to panathanaikos? or was that just pre-mature

Hasn't Laudrup done a similar job as Hughes, got a team with a limited budget (Getafe) doing pretty well. Didn't they get pretty far in the Uefa Cup as well?

Panathainaikos have the champions league next season in their favour though.

Maybe I have the wrong impression of Shearer, but I've always seen him as a bit too big headed to work under anybody else, especially a managerial nobody like Mike Newell. For one, Shearer refused to work for Newcastle under Keegan.

Totally agree with that - I feel we were in for a season of struggle with Hughes next year anyway.

This could turn out to be just what we needed, a new set of eyes, new ideas and who knows, more entertainment.

I see Laudrup got the quarter finals of the Uefa Cup beating Tottenham Hotspur, Anderlecht, AEK and Benfica on the way.

He got to the Copa del rey final as well

In terms of the league he got them around midtable, but got wins over Madrid and Barcelona. And from the looks of it he was highly praised for the attacking football his team played, regarded as some of the best of the season.

Not bad for his first season

SSN says Hughes has signed

Nicko, do you think the likes of Everton will move for Michael Bradley to avoid a bidding war while we are without a manager?

Whoever we appoint, it will be a fairly drawn out process. When Souness left the club we invited applications, then proceded to interviewing before settling on a final candidate.

Shearer and Newel have remained good friends but has had a bit of a fued with Keegan from his last stint at Toon. Plus he's not daft he probably wants to learn his trade else where and move to Toon as the finished article.

It works for me.

SSN anouncing Sparky has moved, official.

I don't think Panathinaikos move is done yet, they are also talking to Henk Ten Cate.

I would go in for Laudrup all right - and why should you not have a chance?

It's a far better name than some already mentioned [although I stand by Coppell as a very good option despite opposition].
