roversmum Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I always thought we passed up a good opportunity when we opted out of signing Pongolle on a permanent basis, especially for the asking price and with Bellamy leaving shortly after. He looked a very promising player. Been cross about that ever since. It was obvious at the time that Flo wanted to stay

thenodrog Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 With regards to the Stephen Warnock situation, His response was... 'I am very happy where I am, I will not be moving anywhere this season, especially not back there!!!' I think that is pretty clear... unless he is pushed, he doesn't want to go... Very much deserved player of the season, he has been fantastic & everytime there has been speculation, he has quite rightly quashed it, again showed lastnight to my mate!!! Uh Oh! Looks like another Lucas Neill FOC situation in the offing. If it turns out to bew the case and you sit on the Blackburn End hi-jaq you'll turn him into a hate figure and boo his every touch within about 12 months.
Gav Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Was it just me or did Pongolle not look completely out of his depth in the Premiership? The pace and physical side of the game was just to much for him from what I recall. He went to Spain and was a real hit in his first season where you get 5 minutes to think about which pass you’ll be making next. But a Premiership player???
Manc Rover Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Been cross about that ever since. It was obvious at the time that Flo wanted to stay Maybe wages was the issue, especially if McCarthy was already being lined up at that time. Not sure if Pongolle would've made the impact as Benni did that season.

Not totally out of his depth but I never thought Pongolle was going to make it as an effective PL striker.
Guest benmaxwell Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 No Rovers transfer news this morning, but the interesting piece is: Birmingham are set to land Ecuador striker Christian Benitez for £6.25m from Mexican club Santos Leguna. (Daily Mirror) I'd like to think we'd take a look, Benitez is quality and would be the perfect replacement for Cruz if he leaves...
alexanders Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Stoke are closing in on the signing of Real Mallorca's £5million-rated Venezuela international midfielder Juan Arango, who is a free-kick specialist. I wonder if Sam has checked him out.
roversmum Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 In reply to Philip's post, there is that to it, but Flo certainly whizzed up and down the wing, I felt he had something to offer there and could develop. Oh well, we will never know now.
alexanders Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I always liked Flo. From the first time I saw him playing for Liverpool and I was delighted when we got him on loan. I have to say Bellamy-Flo partnership really worked well. Also remember flo scoring with a brilliant header, but can't remember against who. I saw one game Flo came off the bench for Atletico Madrid and he suddenly made impact. I would love to have him back, but I think he is way out of our price-range now. Anyone know what we could have bought him for after the loan period?

Lathund Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Calling him Flo just confuses me. I thought you were talking about Tore André there for a while, which didn't make much sense.
alexanders Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Calling him Flo just confuses me. I thought you were talking about Tore André there for a while, which didn't make much sense. It could have been his brother Jostein , playing for Sheffield United and Norway.
Hughesy Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I wouldnt imagine he would be out of our price range - Atletico are in financial troubles so surely they would sell him for less than they paid (£8m).
Ewood and I Would Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 It could have been his brother Jostein , playing for Sheffield United and Norway. I doubt it, he's 44!!!!!
alexanders Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Sorry, bad english. It should've been WHO PLAYED for. BTW, Tore Andrè have been playing for MK Dons this season. According to Skysports - Olympiakos have made an official bid for Derbyshire. Anyone know how much?
bennyboyt11 Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I wouldnt imagine he would be out of our price range - Atletico are in financial troubles so surely they would sell him for less than they paid (£8m). Isn't there also the chance that players, being their main financial asset, would need to be sold for respectable amounts to balance the books?
alexanders Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Isn't there also the chance that players, being their main financial asset, would need to be sold for respectable amounts to balance the books? Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero are worth a helluva lot of money.
bennyboyt11 Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero are worth a helluva lot of money. Aguero most definitely... Just looked at Diego Forlan's goal ratio for Atletico this season, 35 goals in 45 appearances
benhben Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Was it just me or did Pongolle not look completely out of his depth in the Premiership? The seaon when we had Pongolle and Bellamy upfront, we played the best football ive seen us play for many years. The movement and pace upfront was amazing. Neither were 20 goal a season players but the amount of chances they created for each other and the team meant goals were coming from everywhere, not just relying on one strikers like we do at the moment. Thinking about it the squad that finished this season would get battered by the team of 2 or 3 years ago
LeChuck Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Aguero most definitely... Just looked at Diego Forlan's goal ratio for Atletico this season, 35 goals in 45 appearances He won the Golden Shoe this year with 32 league goals, miles ahead of anyone in the Premier League. Oddly enough I believe Marc Janko came second.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Aguero is better, arguably one of the top 5 strikers in the world. I'm guessing he isn't the mystery striker.
benhben Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Aguero is better, arguably one of the top 5 strikers in the world. I'm guessing he isn't the mystery striker. He would also cost around £20m

LeChuck Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 I'm going with Scott McDonald or Nacho Novo, assuming whoever said that the player in question has scored goals just not in the Premier League is correct.
