It would be interesting to know what percentage of our schools have pools compared to American ones

I bet all ours are in private schools

I'm sure I read that the % of Team GB who were privately educated was at 28% compared to the 7% of privately educated people in the nation.

It's not a schools issue...the country needs more publically owned Olympic sized 50m pools so the best swimmers can train properly. There's plenty of public and private pools here but they are too small.

Indeed so. A problem that has existed for at least two generations to my knowledge.

I know an ex Bburn water polo player very well and he complained about the investment in the Waves centre way back when it was built that playing senior water polo at Belper in the shallow end with their legs tucked up unnaturally in the shallow end (the rules do not allow players to touch the bottom with their feet but to tread water all the time) was ridiculous and an embarrassment to the team AND the town. We are now reaping what we sowed.

Iirc Darwen was planned for 50m but a public consultation reduced that to 25m.

Eeees betta eees cheeepah thinking before that became the norm in these parts. Much like the cheapskate thinking behind making long sections of the M65 two lanes and leaving the A59 from Whalley to Gisburn single carriageway... just how many deaths did that decision cause over the years?

Most of my training is geared towards triathlon and I have competed at this distance.

It includes 1500m swim - 40km bike - 10k run.

You do have the build for it SAS. My mate does all that stuff and that iron man carry on too.

My training and physique is more geared towards senior gymnastics with the primary endurance event of the 'parallel bar stool' discipline my absolute speciallity. The training takes many long and exhausting hours and without corporate sponsorship can leave one seriously out of pocket.

A ringing endorsement for private education if that is the case hemel. Just a pity parents who choose private education cannot opt out and end up having to fund the under achievers, big brother contestents and professional footballers produced as a specialist subject by state education.

Looking tough for a gold in triathlon, group of six or so with just Jenkins left.

Olympics allows drafting which has allowed the strong runners to save their legs by sitting behind the leaders in the cycle.

Pretty sure drafting is not allowed domestically, certainly not in the events I enter..

Purchase and Hunter just squeezed out by the Danes on the line, they have to settle for silver. That will help consolidate our position of 3rd in the medal table.

Anyone know what's going on with the mixed doubles tennis? I believe the Tennis finishes tomorrow, but Murray is playing the QF now. When would the potential SF and final be played?

I'd rather Inverdale hadn't done that interview until they were more composed. They weren't at all happy with the Silver medal which is a shame cos they gave their best and were narrowly beaten by a superb Danish performance. They should have been gracious enough to congratulate the Danes and have a blub in private if they must.

I must admit I didn't see it, flicked over to see the 100m.

So who are our medal hopes for the rest of the weekend? Ennis, Farah and GB women's team pursuit all have a great chance tonight. Murray tomorrow in one final, maybe two. Ed Clancy in the Omnium and Ainslie in the Finn and Percy/Simpson in the Star medal races in the sailing tomorrow. Am I missing anyone?

Not sure. We still have a team in the round of 16 in the Fencing....all matches will be completed tomorrow....we have Egypt first.

I think we are still in some swimming events but I'm not sure on that. We might be in both Men's and Women's 4x100 medley relays as well as having at least 1 woman in the 50m Freestyle and a man in I think it's the 1500m freestyle but like I said I'm not positive on any of them.

Also am not positive on this one either but I think we have 2 men in the Long Jump final which is tonight.....Tomlinson and another guy whose name escapes me......and then Chambers and another 2 Brits in the semi-final of the 100m but I highly doubt we will get a medal in that.

Then we have a woman in the final of the triple jump which I think is tomorrow and she qualified with a good distance......and then also tomorrow is the Women's 400m final with Christine Ohuruogu who won our only gold medal in the athletics in Beijing.

The Lithuanians are giving the Americans a real run for their money in the Men's basketball at the moment. I think it's their national sport and I always see them in Olympic Basketball.....Lithuania that is....87-84 to USA with about 4 minutes left.

LIthuania has won the European Championship though it might have been before World War II but they've probably gotten Silver or Bronze in prior Olympics. We had a Lithuanian visit us here, they are absolutely bonkers for basketball and I like their style and he played it well though he was not exactly towering in stature. I'm not that big of a fan of basketball but if the Lithuanians are playing it, then it is all of a sudden pretty good.. I'm sorry Lietuva, as they spell it, couldn't pull it out, they always seem to be just a hair short of winning a whole international competition. Some say they are the tallest people on earth, something to research.

It's interesting to watch that one runner, Pasquali or something, that lost his two legs thus he runs with two artificial lower legs... he must be Australian from the colour of his shirt I would think.
