  1. Haven't had a shot on target have we?
  2. Aye, but sometimes you've just got to let it out. With that done, please Gareth, prove me wrong.
  3. The usual suspects anonymous. Defensively a shambles as soon as a decent team tries to have a go at us, to the surprise of no one. Special mention to Trippier, Bellingham, Foden and Kane who have all been particularly useless. 5th best team in the world? Don't make me laugh. Couldn't beat Denmark. Couldn't beat Slovenia. Narrowly scraped past Serbia. Now being embarrassed by Slovakia. Lose this one and Gareth needs to do the honourable thing, much like the manager he replaced, and resign immediately afterwards. Best England manager since Sir Alf my foot. He isn't a patch on Robson, Venables or Hoddle for a start. Getting a bunch of easy tournament draws and achieving the bare minimum of squeezing past mostly lesser opposition, before inevitably losing to the first good team we come up against, don't impress me much, to paraphrase Shania Twain. Russia 2018 and Euro 2020 were huge chances for us to finally win an international tournament. I genuinely think with a progressive, modern manager at the helm we'd have done it. Such a shame. We can still win this one, but even if we do scrape through the Swiss will teach us a lesson. Might be for the best if we crash out now.
  4. Wish Southgate would resign at half time. Totally fucked this tournament for us.
  5. It's simply because he has no imagination. He can't see any other way of winning.
  6. You have to make some allowance for it being accidental, but I don't think it's as simple as saying "don't penalise any accidental handballs". If you've got some clumsy oaf jumping and running around with their arms swinging everywhere, then that obviously needs to be addressed if said clumsiness affects the natural flight of the ball, whether they intended to handball or not. What I found strange was the suggestion that proximity from ball-to-hand has now been removed from the interpretations of the rule. Can't see any logic behind that decision. That's where they've gone wrong imo. You have to take that into account alongside what would be considered a 'natural' body position to make a fair call. At the moment you've got half the defenders running around with their arms crossed behind their backs, which is ridiculous and clearly gives the attacker an advantage as running around with your arms behind your back is going to limit your maneuverability.
  7. Hungary's last gasp goal against Scotland now counts for nothing.
  8. Shame for Ukraine, undone by a poor first game in the end. Played better and were more up for it than Belgium, but just didn't quite have the quality to get over the line in the end. No shame in going out like that, they gave it a right good go, as our Gary used to say. Would happily face Belgium, as they look rancid, but think they're on the other side of the draw now?
  9. I don't think better teams facing us are going to be naive enough to play gung ho attacking football, leaving plenty of space for Saka, Bellingham, Foden etc to exploit. They'll have been watching our matches and know that it'll simply be a case of allowing us to piss around with the ball for a while before one of our players inevitably misplaces a pass, at which point we can be picked off without too much trouble on the break. Better teams will totally tear us apart on the counter unless we step up our performances massively.
  10. Has to be one of the worst groups in tournament history. 7 goals in the entire group, I think? Final matches and not a single one of the teams could score a goal ffs. You'd expect us, Denmark and Slovenia to all get knocked out in the last 16, and I don't think any neutrals would be too concerned. So many good games and good performances across the tournament, but Group C has been the big let down for anyone watching
  11. Got to feel sorry for the travelling fans short-changed by these diabolical England performances. I feel robbed and it's only my time and TV license.
  12. Must be one of the worst Euro, or WC, groups ever.
  13. We're walking our way to the trophy lads. #slowandsteadywinstherace
  14. Foden the pick of the bunch so far. Kane once again not at the races. A bit more energy about us in the last 15 minutes but it's pretty sad that this is even worth mentioning.
  15. Come to think of it Scotland did have one shot on target, the Hanley effort at the end, but the BBC stats don't recognise it for whatever reason. Oh well. Either way, it was baffling to play this way in a must win game against Hungary. Waited until the last 10 mins to try and then massively overloaded the attack and could have let in two or three if Hungary had more quality. Granted they probably should have had a pen but sometimes it's about making your own luck. Scotland seemed to have taken notes from England with that slow, ponderous style of play. But at least we normally go a goal up before turning to shit.
  16. Weird seeing a couple of comments elsewhere calling this a smash and grab by Hungary. Scotland had 4 shots and none on target. Hungary had 14 with 5 on target. Wouldn't call that a smash and grab result. Edit: one on target for the Scots
  17. Lol. Good old Scotland. Draw realistically wouldn't have been enough anyway, so they were going home whether Hungary scored at the end or not. Cruel way to go out though.
  18. Of course not. No player is going to come out in a public interview and slate the manager in the middle of a tournament, is he? We don't have any Roy Keane types in the squad who are going to do something that extreme and risk getting sent home. A player mutiny isn't going to do anything to help the cause either, especially as there's no guarantee this tournament won't be the last one for any of them. I thought Southgate sounded really shaken in the Denmark post-match interview. He's usually pretty calm and composed, but something was off about his tone of voice directly after the match. I don't know if it was a realisation that things were badly broken, or if something had been said in the dressing room, but to me at least there was a noticeable change in his demeanour. Rice and Pickford have come out with two totally different views of the situation in the past couple of days - Rice saying the pressure is getting to the players and they need to let it go, Pickford saying it isn't and they need to embrace the pressure and thrive under it. I preferred Pickford's response, but I imagine Rice's was more truthful.
  19. I don't really understand this comment. How is going out there and playing walking football, as well as retreating into defence as soon as we go ahead, creating memories for anybody? I could understand these comments if we'd been a bit kamikaze and reckless in the first two games, but there's been no leadership, desperation to win, or desire to create memories in either of our first two performances.
  20. Unfortunately they appear to be completely useless in front of goal. Wouldn't have bet on France/Netherlands being the first 0-0 of the tournament but it's heading that way at the moment.
  21. I don't think I've seen this level of discontent across the England fanbase since the 2010 WC. Even in 2014 when we bombed out in the group stages it was more a shrug of the shoulders, as many didn't have confidence that we were better than Italy or Uruguay anyway, and fully expected us to go home early. This time around we've come into the tournament as huge favourites, although that seems to be based more on the theoretical ability of the starting eleven than how they have realistically played as a team over the past year or so. It feels like everyone can see Southgate's time is up, even those who have previously backed him and consider his record a good one. Personally I'd say we've wasted the chance to win something during a time period where numerous big countries have had a dip, but I can accept the alternative argument that Southgate has got England further than other managers and it's potentially churlish to try and diminish those achievements with theoretical external weaknesses. Regardless, things feel stale now, and as with many managers who stay on a bit too long he's lost the plot in regards to team selection and general coaching. In fact he's arguably just lost the plot as a whole, if his ridiculous Kalvin Phillips quote is anything to go by. Everyone should be concerned by Kane's admission that the players literally don't know what they are meant to be doing in certain situations. If those basics aren't being applied in training then we're far past the point of no return for Southgate. The fact we're top of the group, almost certain to qualify, and yet there is still major disappointment points to there being a real undercurrent of disillusionment relating to Southgate's management - on pitch, anyway. I think we can all see that the current performance levels - going back quite a long time now - will not get us very far. We're miles off the better teams in this tournament, despite having a very talented group of players at our disposal. It's one of those situations where it's obvious the manager's time is up. Everyone knows it - the players included. But we're stuck with him and his staff, and we're going to have to watch our team play like a bunch of cloggers until we meet a decent team who will dispatch us with relative ease. I'd love to see what a Kieran McKenna, or an Eddie Howe, or a Jurgen Klopp (won't happen, but hypothetically) could do with this team. The potential is there, but under the current manager that potentially is massively capped. That much is clear, and it's intensely frustrating.
  22. Yep, he's been out of club management for 15 years and I don't see him returning to it once his England tenure ends. I think he'll just shift to another FA position.
  23. Agree, the players look like they're being forced to play against their will. It's baffling to see how lethargic and passive the entire team is. The one time we woke up, when Walker nicked the ball, we scored. A difficult draw against Denmark isn't the end of the world, but the lack of intensity is so incredibly frustrating to watch. It's obvious to everyone watching that if we don't improve massively we are going out as soon as we come up against a quality team. That's why it's difficult to be positive about as being top of the group, no matter how often the players want to remind us of that.
  24. I think Kane admitting the players don't know what to do when momentum is against us was pretty telling as to how well this team is coached. Deary me.
  25. I did chuckle at the BBC interviewer just bluntly asking Walker "does the manager tell you to just sit back after scoring?", lmao.
