No I meant Greece. They won it in 04. They actually beat Portugal twice (including in the final). 2004 holds a special place in my heart as I distinctly remember saying "B****cks!" after drawing Greece in the Euro Sweepstake. . . plus such things as Germany not making it out of their group. Again it was the usual tragic failure for England with another who? moment - does anyone remember Darius Vassel?

The time to Greece 04 would have been back when we had a decent defence. Though, that's the type of team, formation and tactics England should be striving for in the future as we become ever increasing 'minnows with half a chance'.

Players who never quite made it
Husky replied to roverandout's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I was going to ask how that rapper celebrity TV guy managed to qualify for England if it is 'necessary to have an English parent or grandparent' as suggested here. Imagine Giggs and Terry in the same team. For the first time ever players would have been pleading for the manager to ban the WAGS from travelling. -
Another Icelandic moment. English sport in further decline.

I'll have to go for Ryan Giggs. He never quite made the right decision . . -
Perhaps playing the Danny Welbeck World Cup Drinking Game could revive interest? In England's final group game he could go head to head against The poor man's Heskey (Lukaku). Double the fun, hic! ?

When is there going to be an England international at Ewood Park? It seems like there's a better atmosphere when football comes home to the North. Wembley is full of tourists.
-
All he had to do was Pickford the ball out of the net.

I missed the first half, so only have negative things to say. That was diabolical....and Welbeck.... Jesus wept.

The usual Thwaites.

Just watched an Italia 90 programme on The History Channel. It's slightly depressing that 1990 now looks like the 70s . . . ? Going back to the bad goalkeeping theme in crucial games; There wasn't any as bad as the recent CL final, but . . .Paddy Bonner certainly didn't cover himself in glory in gifting Italy their 1-0 QF winning goal, then Italy's keeper gifted Argentina their SF equaliser by coming out for a cross and being beaten by a header. As for England, you look back and think Shilton was past his best then . . . .that Paul Parker deflection/lob, it almost went in slow motion . . .Jesus,!!! you'd be calling a keeper for letting that in these days. You can't blame a keeper for not saving a penalty - but you got the impression that West Germany could have taken penalties all night and he wouldn't have got near one (one does wonder whether a tactical goalkeeping substitution might have been a better option when it came down to the crunch). England should have won. (Waddle hitting the inside of the post - that cross that flashed across the empty goal (You do wonder that had Gascoigne not been a drinker he would have been that little bit fitter and sharper onto it). History should have been re-written with a revenge final win v Argentina . . .?

The fabulous Kylie was 50 yesterday! (I think her first UK single is also 30 years old). I hear she's still 'available'.

Is anyone concerned about the goalkeeping position. Looking back England have suffered with some really bad goalkeeping in major international finals competitions in the recent past. I don't know, but this kind of thing doesn't seem to happen regularly to 'other' *top teams when it comes down to the crunch. *Disclaimer - I do realise that England are no longer considered a 'top team'.

The only thing I'll predict at this stage is that we'll definitely finish above NotLob.

It seems a bit daft that there is no cricket on a Bank Holiday Monday, (Royal London one-day) yet they played on Thursday etc. One can only presume they get more money from Sky and care less about 'more bums on seats'.

It seems quite strange to think that Blackburn actually had a 'rock scene' back in the 90s. ? I remember The Grapes and also I think Cest La Vie was more alternative (if you remembered to go downstairs and not straight to Kamp Kylie, lol).

I'm upping my expectations for the WC:

Lancs really don't do this 50 overs stuff these days. They seem to keep finding new ways to lose. The general rule of thumb these days seems to be, if you don't get 300, you lose.

I don't know how it's been domestically but on the International TV news (inc Sky and BBC) there wasn't even 1 mention of 1966 World Cup winner Ray Wilson dying - not even on the Vidiprinter or the Sports news. Very strange, especially as it happened during the World Cup squad announcement period. Not famous enough? Or don't they want the Dementia/Alzheimer's football link that was reported on a while back to get any attention? Either way, it's very strange, especially since said news channels reported on long faded nobodies such as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson dying.

We can't have fast players at Rovers until the fitness team finally get their head around some decent hamstring warm ups. Does anyone remember a player called Josh King? At the time he was considered too fast for Bowyer and slow-boys.
-
Because Hameed is in woeful form and even at best he's a 50 strike rate player which is nowhere near good enough for one day cricket. Even Croft's scratchy 33 from 42 balls essentially lost the game.

May as well have picked Ryan Sessegnon as England haven't had a decent left winger since, er the non appearance of Ryan Giggs, lol. More so because the excuse after England fail will be along the usual lines of....young squad, planning for the future, they'll improve etc. so why not go the whole mile with another young wild card.

Please admins. Can we have a special World Cup Chadometer.
