Back in the day somebody could have come on here and said they’d heard Roy Keane was signing after the weekend. Just because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean they were wrong. We all now know how close we were to signing Keane.

I remember seeing a young lad called Dennis Rofe playing left back for Orient at Rochdale in the old third division. This would be about 1970. Rochdale had a really good right winger at the time, City were supposed to be signing him but it never happened. Rofe completely bottled the winger up, and then near the end he fan the length of the field to lay on the winning goal. I thought this lad looks a real prospect. So I wrote to the club scout. I got a letter back thanking me but saying that “ Rofe was already under contract to Orient “. Well I knew that. 2 years later Orient sold him to Leicester for what was then a record fee for a British full back ! He went on to have a long career at Leicester, Southampton and Chelsea.
