  1. Those skills can and should be worked on. If you lack pace you lack pace full stop. Somebody with a good coaching set up would be able to work on his ball skills. What surprises me is that Johnno, who later in his career became an excellent attacking right back at Big Club, hasn't been able to improve him to any great degree. Maybe he's sat in front of the computer these days.
  2. Or Brentford ? Always a lower league team in my lifetime.
  3. You only know when you get out there in a real competitive game. After my injury I was fine in the gym playing five a side games and practice matches etc. When it was for real and blokes were sliding in on me it was another story all together. Prior to breaking my leg the rougher it got the more I liked it. After the leg break the realisation that it can happen so easily and you can be in a lot of pain and discomfort for months afterwards took the edge off my game. I'd had a few games for the reserves and done ok so I was promoted to sub for the first team. Just one sub in those days. I remember standing on the sidelines watching a game that turned out to be a bit of a ding dong battle. I still don't like admitting it but I was hoping nobody had to come off because I didn't fancy going on . Prior to the injury I would have been chomping at the bit to get on. That was when I thought " Time to call it a day ". What Dack needs is really good kick on the knee early on. And to come through that kick of course.
  4. As another poster said if we got a £5 million offer we'd probably snatch their hands off but whoever buys him could have a bargain on their hands with the right development. If we're ever going to do anything other than tread water we need to hold on to our best players.
  5. I'd want a very good fee. A manager who knows what he's doing would make a good right full back out of him. He's got all the attributes apart from composure in the last third of the pitch.
  6. I wouldn't consider signing Dack until I'd seen him play again multiple times if I was signing players for West Brom. Even then it would depend on what division they were in. If they get promoted I don't think Dack will be on their radar any longer.
  7. How long do you think it would have taken for Warnock to put a rocket up a few of our lot ? It didn't take him long to work Gestede out at 'Boro.
  8. It's knowing the areas the ball is likely to drop into in any given circumstance. It's anticipating mistakes by defenders, simple things like miss trapping a simple pass,, It's following up simple shots at the keeper when 99 times out of a 100 you know he'll swallow the ball. You are counting on it being the one time he drops the ball at your feet. Look where the majority of goals are scored from. It's that area between the 6 yard box and the penalty spot - get yourself in there. I was listening to that centre forward who played for the England women's team in the last World Cup. The one who ended up scoring all the goals. Previously she'd been chasing from wing to wing, working hard, but either not getting the chances or lacking the necessary sharpness to put them away. Phil Neville told her " Stop running around, there are two imaginary lines running up the sides of the six yard box to the front edge of the penalty area. Fix the shape of that box in your head. When we're attacking in the last third I don't want to see you anywhere else but in that box ". Once she did that the goals started coming.
  9. If Brighton are having his progress ( or lack of ) monitored regularly I would have thought they'd be only too happy to let Rovers pay his wages for another season.
  10. I agree, he shows no inclination to get in where the boots are flying about. That was the first thing I noticed when somebody put up the " highlights reel " from his Forest days. If you don't do that you won't score many. Dack, for all his ball skills, gets plenty of his goals by getting up close and personal with the 6 yard box.
  11. The older you get the more cautious you get. I'd like it not be true but unfortunately it's a fact. On another tack I was expecting Johnno to have made more of an impact with the players than he appears to have done.
  12. He still needs to be getting in the box if he's going to be scoring goals. That's what MGP did when he was scoring goals. As time went by he stopped getting in there and the goals dried up. You don't get many 25 yard shots into the top corner in a season. If you're on the left wing and the ball is out on the right hand side - get in the bloody box !
  13. I'm not a Brererton fan by a long chalk but from what I've seen his main ( only ? ) skill set is running from deeper positions with the ball. I think playing him up the front has been proven not to work, maybe playing a bit deeper may work. Regarding the game - as on most occasions it'll be the team that wants it the most that will come out on top. That'll be Barnsley then.
  14. My major criticism of Mowbray is in all the time he's been here he's never discovered a way of " winning ugly ". We all knew what Wigan away would be like, just like they were when we played them at Ewood. A dogfight. Armed with that knowledge we should have been ready to roll our sleeves up from the first whistle and get stuck in. We're not too bad against the less physical teams that let us play, but the minute we get in a game that calls for the battlers in the team to emerge we discover we haven't got any. You can't play well every game but the successful teams learn how to " win ugly ".
  15. I've only seen it once but the defending as a whole for the first goal was school boy standard. Every time we could have got control of the ball we took the wrong decision. We were on the back foot and Wigan were on the front foot.
  16. I remember when we were debating wether he was worth signing again somebody on here trying to tell me what a good header of the ball Gallagher was. Maybe he meant Kevin Gallagher. David Speedie was a foot shorter than either of the two young giants we have up front and he was a better header of the ball than both of them.
  17. It should be obvious by now that Mowbray has an aversion to playing young players. They only get picked if he's absolutely desperate.
  18. Was the hairdresser " John Peers " by any chance ? Failing that, Mrs Shoelaces cutter " Greg Cousins ".
  19. I think the players like life just the way it is.
  20. If you watched his " highlights " before we signed him it was mainly of him running from out wide with the ball. There wasn't much goal mouth action in it.
  21. Are we still talking about Sam Gallagher ? The guy who's 6' 5" tall until a cross comes over when he becomes 5' 9"
  22. Take a bow " roverandout ".
  23. It sounds like we were " out enthused " again by a pretty poor team. If I'd a £ for every time that's happened over the last ten years I'd be a rich man. I can take being out skilled but being out enthused - never !
  24. To score goals he needs to do two things that he's shown no signs of doing so far - 1) Get in the bloody box ! 2) To quote the great Paul Ince, SHOOT !
