Ben Arentoft? -
Poor old Burnley, couldn't happen to a nicer mob. Sticking my neck out here and it's based on a hunch more than anything else but I expect Kompany to turn their fortunes around and I don't think they'll go down. There's some poor sides at the bottom of the Prem and there's always 1 or 2 teams that fall away from mid-table in the latter half of the season. Tin hat is on.....

Big game for Rovers against big club because winning away and losing at home which we are at present is pointless - literally. Rovers need to address the poor home form urgently and Wednesday against a poor Birmingham team is a good place to start. Anything other than a comfortable win would be unacceptable and Tomasson needs to get his selection and tactics right Rovers 2 Birmingham 0 -
Revived England in spectacular fashion after the disaster of Graham Taylor but turned out to another nearly man - got England to the semi-final in our own national stadium and by far the best team in the tournament yet still somehow managed to blow it. I don't know why the FA let Venables go because he was a breath of fresh air and Hoddle and Keegan, who followed him, ruined his legacy by turning out to be even more disastrous than Taylor. It's also forgotten that Venables was a top-class player too. RIP

Good article on Lucas Neill. He was at Preston crown court so assume he lives locally. Not the first and won't be the last footballer to lose millions, though it seems he has been naive rather than negligent in his business dealings. Wouldn't classify him as a hard man but he certainly didn't shirk a tackle

If that’s the case and it’s really that simple then the manager is at fault. He’s found a system of playing without a striker that is successful away from home so he needs to do the same at home. Everyone is praising him as a coaching genius after another fine win today but he’s clearly not solved the Ewood conundrum. If we follow up today by beating Birmingham we might be getting somewhere -

So true. Today counts for naught if we don’t win or at least draw against Birmingham on Wednesday. The rot has to stop -

How to explain this cracking away form but continuing bad results at home? -

Brilliant results away, poor at home suggest we should try something different in matches at Ewood. Come on Mr Tomasson, it's up to you -

As a goalscoring forward / midfield player he's been a good signing but a striker he ain't -

Hirst, Ennis and Telalović.... the sum total of Gregg's efforts to find a striker -
This isn't about finished articles or even potential. We shouldn't be "in the market" of buying crocks - full stop. And if we end up with more "punts" like Ennis, we won't have 11 men on the pitch. Signing any injury prone player when things are so tight financially doesn't make sense, especially as he was signed early in the summer and presented as some sort of coup
-
Thanks Gregg. Great PR as usual
-
So the obvious question is, why did we sign him? It doesn't make any sense, particularly with a small squad, limited finances and every player having to provide some sort of value for money
-
Tommy Smith, now there was a genuine hard man. Dave Mackay and Ron Harris others. Souness was hard, and brilliant too. Not sure about Roy Keane -I'd class him more as a thug. What he did to Haaland was criminal (literally).
-
McManaman would jump out of the way of a passing butterfly, so I wouldn't pay much attention to him A "genuine psychopath" isn't a hard man, he's a psychopath. Salgado never struck me as a "hard man" during his time at Rovers. This is all subjective and makes for an interesting discussion but no one's defined what a hard man is yet
-
Southgate should have been binned, or resigned, after the last World Cup. When you're the subject of a West End play, it should be obvious your time is up. He's done well but losing the Euro final, our own midden, was poor, and showed his limitations The players look like they're not listening to him now
-
Hughes was a tough nut all right I remember him scoring for United - can’t recall who it was against - picking the ball out of the net and running back to his half with the ball under his arm banging shoulders with opposition players on the way. He used to get his retaliation in first as the late Welsh rugby coach Carwyn James used to say.
-
ahem....
-
Normal players who could give or take a tackle - as stated We need a definition of hard men - real hard men.

Key in an article in the Times said England had suffered from "concentrating too much on Tests" in the recent years to the detriment of the 1-day game To which the answer must be, why not both? Other countries seem to manage it and the ECB have far more resources than most other countries It doesn't matter that England have done well in ODIs in recent years. England have let us down - badly
-
You could say the same of any of Speight, Neill, Nelsen, Gayle, Reid, Hendry, Berg, Givet, Baptiste, Jones, Salgado or Mokoena.
