  1. West Brom are close to signing Tom Lawrence on a free. Him, Swift, Wallace, Dike, Robinson and Grant is a formidable attack at this level.
  2. The only part that could be subject to any criticism is the time taken to appoint both people, especially considering that it was seemingly known internally that Mowbray was to leave this summer. My point was just that whenever a club changes manager, they will be playing catch up in the market with the new man/men wanting their own players etc. By the time our recruitment process restarted, many/most teams will have made progess with quite a few getting deals over the line. That specific point wasnt a criticism. If indeed Kompany was aware of his appointment before Tomasson, then the latter is naturally playing catch up.
  3. I have repeatedly said that it is unrealistic to expect ALL of a group of youngsters to all successfully break through together out of necessity. I dont doubt that we have talented youngsters and I am sure that some will emerge but I feel uncomfortable at the idea of forcing it simply because lots of players have left the club. Ive never once claimed that I know more than JDT either. None of us on this messageboard have an equal level of expertise to him. Nor did any of us have a similar level of expertise to Mowbray. I am merely giving my opinion, if we can only give our opinion if we feel more qualified than professional managers then we may aswell close the board.
  4. Absolute rubbish. The point is not that these kids aren't good enough either now or eventually. It is expecting a decent number at once to all be ready at the same time, which puts pressure on them because if any aren't ready, perhaps just at this very moment, we are left short of options and needing to play them at times regardless which likely will hinder their development if they struggle. Who has ever said that they "expect these academy lads to come in and never make a mistake?" That is a straw man argument whereby you have taken an extreme version of what people are debating to make people seem like they are unreasonably impatient. Some of the young lads may be best served developing further, whether here or out on loan like Wharton and Carter have done with success, that is down to the individual player. Some can be on the fringes and if they impress, by all means give them a chance as and when, if they swim, they keep their places, if they sink we crucially have enough alternatives for it not to massively hinder our chances of getting results. But no, if you want to portray it as an angry group of people with pitchforks not giving anyone a chance, that is up to you. And Mowbray's disdain for youth? Our side was the second youngest in the league last season, with Wharton, Buckley and Travis key components that he has brought through, as well of course as Lenihan and Nyambe.
  5. Ive never at any single point suggested, implied or claimed that he isn't.
  6. https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/20238208.blackburn-rovers-transfer-latest-squad-train-portugal/ 6 players AT MOST will almost certainly leave us short going into the season so I hope that it is just Rich Sharpe guessing. From what I see, we have one very good goalkeeper at this level with no competent substitutes. We have one very good centre back, a second who is also good but never fit and a solid enough left back. We have a good central midfielder who will start every week, a number 10 as good as anyone in the league if he recovers and another very promising first team number 10. We have 3 wide men all of whom have a good amount of promise but none of which have shown the ability (as much down to circumstance to be fair) to contribute with goals and assists regularly, a bang average striker and a goalscorer who will leave before the window closes. Beyond that, we have a few squad players (Carter, Rankin Costello and Edun) none of whom are yet proven at this level, and then lots of seemingly very promising kids beyond that but we don't know how many if any will be ready this season. It's a big ask. You take our biggest 6 losses, Nyambe, Lenihan, Van Hecke, Rothwell, Khadra and presumably Brereton, so we need our 6 signings to adequately replace those 6, which on a budget is a huge ask. You are then also putting total reliance on untested kids to fill the gaps which again is a huge, huge ask.
  7. No. Indeed, no one has in actual mens football. But my comments to Joe where in no way in relation to judgements of Ash Phillips' ability and potential. It was around the outlandish comment that he could be a "generational talent." I was trying to ascertain whether his definition of a generational talent was different to mine whereby only a few players every generation could be defined as such, eg players like Mbappe and Foden in this generation. I don't argue against that he may well be the best centre back in the country at his age. The debate was about the description more than the player.
  8. We did have to catch up, its not even a debate! We had 6 weeks without a manager and indeed the director of football who is working with him, therefore for 6 weeks we couldn't sign anyone whereas others could and did. Any team who changes manager will likely have to play catch up. It's not even a criticism. I never said that we should rush signings, you typically are putting words in my mouth. We need quality but ideally the sooner the better to get them integrated within our team ahead of the season. Anyway, this thread is about Burnley and where necessary, your biased ramblings about how doomed they are.
  9. Of course and as a result they were also playing catch up on most of the division. Seemingly they are very much in the process of catching up but I suppose they have more money which helps.
  10. As mentioned from my post earlier in thread, with sources and quotes: The intention was the first total renovation of the pitch in 30 years, costing £2m, but the owners were unwilling to fund it in the end. Some of the improvements that you mention could be perhaps above the standard maintenance but they don't compare to the initially intended renovation. Common sense also dictates that you wouldn't need to email/arrange meetings with the club to hear about such improvements. If the pitch was totally renovated as initially intended, then it would have been all over the website, the social media and the LT.
  11. To clarify as this question was never addressed, just the cryptic going round in circles. This was a no? @1864roverite
  12. It isn't about how much we trust in Broughton and Tomasson, nor is it a criticism of the plan to evaluate the current crop, that being said the manager will always say that as it will boost the players and it isnt a new soundbite, he has also said that recruitment is ongoing. We are playing catch up because we went 6 weeks or so without a manager, its pretty much a fact that other teams have had a head start and it isn't a criticism of either of the aforementioned names to say as such. The search didn't need to take 6 weeks, but equally, replacing a manager will always cause delays in recruitment, that isn't a criticism. We could do with getting some players in ASAP, hopefully we are working hard towards conclusions on that front but I am not too confident that anything is imminent sadly. Quality is the most important thing but we could do with players getting settled in with their new team mates as well. There are 7 games before the window closes, one thing I am sure of is we cannot wait until then. Also you say Dolan can replace Khadra, but who replaces Dolan? He may not in an ideal world but equally he has come off a poor season and he may be priced out of a move or indeed not attract much serious interest to begin with. The thing is, not EVERY single player at Burnley linked with a move will move, some will and some won't I am sure. It seems they have been very proactive in making headway in the market.
  13. It is a hell of a claim but it depends on your definition of a "generational talent." I don't doubt that admittedly at a very, very young age, he may well be the best CB of his age in the country but to me, that isn't a generational talent. Surely a generational talent is one of a few (at a push, suppose you could argue its just one) at one time, so at the moment, maybe Foden, Haaland, Mbappe and perhaps a couple of others.
  14. Are the works you mentioned that have happened the same renovation planned a year ago? They may be but based on nothing from the club on the website I naturally presume not.
  15. If the pitch had undergone the full renovation that was initially intended prior to the owners unwillingness to spend money, it wouldnt require someone to email the club to find out about it!
  16. Rothwell pulled out ill very late and we had very few alternatives but its beside the point to just pin everything on Mowbray. I was discussing the quality of the player and whether he is a good central midfielder.
  17. The point has nothing to do with the quality of the current crop of prospects. I am showing that history dictates that more than half of each batch of kids falls by the wayside, if you can get a couple of really good prospects then its considered a success. To expect loads at once to come through and all be a success is incredibly naive in general, my point has nothing to do with the specific quality and potential of the current group. I love the argument about thinking that I will agree automatically if Tomasson decides to include Brown in the squad this season. I dont know if he is good enough and prefer not to take the risk at the expense of a signing, he has only played once. (and was crap IMO) But it is you that doesnt have the ability to critique and tends to echo whatever the club is doing at any one time!
  18. You can have some semblence of a longer term plan in terms of selling players for big money, always immediately replacing for cheaper and continuing that cycle. Sadly that is impossible under our terrible owners because of their regular habit of totally turning off the taps, which stops such a process in its tracks.
  19. Is he ok in the middle of the park? A bit of recency bias having travelled so far for him to let everyone down with utter stupidity against Peterborough but I dont recall him ever really having a good game in the middle.
  20. Not that it makes any difference but looks like Edun has taken number 7 and Ayala has moved from 5 to 4. Leaves 2, 5, 6 and 8 free in the first 11.
  21. The thing is, this has been said so many times, lets promote x y and z assuming that they are all capable. What tends to happen is a few do breakthrough most likely not at the same time and many of the others disappear. A couple of years ago, it was Buckley, Rankin-Costello, Butterworth, Carter, Magloire and Thompson. A few years before, it was Nyambe, Lenihan, Green and Rittenberg amongst others, many of which I don't remember the names of. Relying on so many breaking through successfully together is beyond foolish, history tells you that. It would be a big success if 2 or 3 do. Burnley are definitely not in a position where they need double what we need either, not unless you cannot see past bias. They also have made one decent looking addition and are close to a number of others. Any further ones who go will generate income.
  22. This was the article prior to the reconstruction at the final stages of planning: https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/19124191.rovers-ceo-outlines-2m-ewood-park-pitch-renovations-plans/ This was from the fans forum in May 2021: "TS stated that at the last meeting the club were in the process of tendering for a complete reconstruction of the pitch at Ewood Park. SW added that a preferred supplier had been selected with a budget of close to £2m. Unfortunately, the economic situation in India and the amount of ongoing support the owners had been making through the pandemic meant that they were unwilling to approve the expenditure for a full refurbishment." I may be mistaken and maybe that has happened, the total renovation, but I don't think so? If so then I hold my hands up but I suspect it would have been promoted on the official site and in the LT.
  23. I think we both have huge gaps, we have lost our captain, our player of the season, our main right back, a key central midfielder and a regular wide man so 5 key regular starters. We are also practically certain to lose our only consistent goalscorer and also have lost a number of squad players. I suppose you have lost 2 key CB's, your goalkeeper and are almost certain to lose your main goal threat as well as a few squad fillers but I guess the thing is there is a chance that you lose 1 or 2 more. Still, we got managers on the same day but you seem to be doing business very quickly. I guess it is all about quality and you have a big advantage with a lot more money, hopefully we can get some deals done in the next week or 2.
  24. What happened to the total revamp after 30 years? Ah yes, the money wasn't provided, as much as you dress up what has happened, that is what didn't happen.
