Championship 2018-19
roversfan99 replied to Cherry Blue's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Not too much can be taken at all from that. We had Raya, Nyambe, Lenihan, Mulgrew, Williams, Graham and Bennett in the team still. But we had new manager bounce and crucially we played a lot of teams with nothing to play for. Im not saying we dont have reasons to be confident but theres no point reading into and extrapolating that little run of games. -
Wheres any suggestion of Garner from?
-
None of my post suggested or implied that I doubt Mowbray. My point suggesting he has bravely said that hes aiming to get players higher on the list than Armstrong and Chapman is a brave and bold statement. If he achieves this, then everyone will be saying how good his signings are, in that they will be better than players that would be very popular should they return, and if he doesnt, then he would have failed in the market. If he ends up with Armstrong and Chapman, then any disappointment that the higher quality targets hes mentioned havent joined will be totally overwhelmed by happiness to see 2 favourites back. (unless they are both loans, then fingers will be pointed at those above him) None of that is any way negative or doubting of him.

Find Mowbrays interview today to be very brave. Firstly, id love Armstrong in particular back, as ive said, permanently. Chapman im worried about his injuries so for me it would have to be a cheap deal but id be excited if he came back, albeit less so than Armstrong. Its brave in that hes said judge him at the end of the window. If our signings arent better than Armstrong and Chapman then hes put his head on the block saying what hes said, so fair play and I look forward to him acting on his word. I think it can be dangerous to get too obsessed with Championship experience. Experience in general, we have Mulgrew, Graham, Smallwood, Evans, Whittingham, Williams, Conway and Bennett so plenty. I dont get how the City kid fills this demand either. And his first 2 signings have very little combined Championship experience. Ive had this debate before with @chaddyrovers, it has to be worthwhile experience. In his attempted defence of Kent and Gallagher, he used Championship experience, even though in the main it is negative experience, Gallagher scoring very few goals and Kent having one average loan spell and one horrendous one. Dack has no Championship experience but that wouldnt stop most teams in the league taking him. I get that Armstrong has not performed at Championship level before but I feel like it is still somewhat of a safe choice in that we know he has pace, directness and goals which we need and works perfectly in tandem with Dack and Graham. But there is of course a semblance of risk which I acknowledge.

Mentions a tendency to run down blind alleys and hold on to the ball too much but its par for the course for the type of player he is so that doesnt concern me too much. He tries things and is exciting. The more worrying aspect is positionally. Says there was a struggle to fit him in the team with Vydra taking his favoured 10 role, the article also dispells the myth that hes equally capable wide. I just hope we can find a way to get both him and Dack in the starting 11 together.
-
Think thats a bit harsh, he scored 9 in 21 from the wing, and linked perfectly in tandem with Graham and Dack. Did far more than Chapman, albeit he got far more game time.
-
You keep mentioning McKay, dont you think you should trust Mowbray In all seriousness, he would have been a good signing for us, worth a gamble, good stats, but we arent in the same market as Swansea are. Theyve got parachute payments, they are one of the favourites to go back up, they are about to sell Mawson for 20m, they are about to spend 4m on Celina, yet they are signing City players who havent played senior football and Forest cast offs for pittance. Hardly a club that is desperate to get back.

The BRFCS 2018/19 Predictions Thread
roversfan99 replied to rog of the rovers's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Where will Rovers finish this season? : 16th Player of the Year : Bradley Dack Young Player of the Year: Jacob Davenport Top Goalscorer: Bradley Dack Championship Promoted : Stoke, Derby, West Brom Championship Relegated : Rotherham, Bolton, Birmingham Dark Horse : Preston Hey....Stranger things have happened : Both Wolves and Fulham to finish in the top 10. Miscellaneous : Jordan Rhodes to finish as Championship top scorer. -
Cant say id be concerned even if it was true. So raw and untested. Swansea going for players like Nmecha, Celina and McKay dont scream of promotion to me.
-
He made 3 points. 2 of which were based on the player. An acknowledgement of the hype around him and happiness that the loan is longer than initially expected.
-
Happy with the Palmer signing, in that hes of a calibre to really push us on, proven record of promotion at this level, and gives us more individuality in the final third. Very happy to see that the deal is a season long loan too. Think the media team have scored a bit of an own goal with their over the top coverage of the deal, seems a bit underwhelming to only sign the player we all knew we were signing anyway. Not one for all the nonsense on social media around signings but thats perhaps grumpiness beyond my years. I just hope that Palmer is a regular and Mowbray finds a way of using him with Dack. He is naturally a central player which clashes with Dack, but he can play from wide, I imagine Chelsea will have ensured, probably via financial penalties, that we give him the game time they consider to be sufficient to agree to a season long loan, so I hope we see him regularly, albeit he has had problems with injuries in the past. Mowbray has given Dack the perfect platform to take his game up a couple of levels, and he knew exactly how to use Armstrong in terms of getting him involved from wide in a way that Bolton had failed to do. Contrary to this, Chapman in particular was underused and Mowbray didnt know how to get the best of him, and Payne who is also naturally a 10 and in glimpses had shown that he could link with Dack from wide positions, was again not trusted nearly enough in favour of safer but far less offensively threatening alternatives in Antonsson and Conway. His eye for exciting, attacking talent is there, his use of them is hit and miss. Its down to Mowbray to get Palmer in the team and working in tandem with Dack as soon as possible. If he does that I imagine we will be entertained. Now for a good striker and some pace out wide, and a centre back.
-
One things for sure. Theyve set themselves up for a fall if its anything but exciting signings. Hoping for Armstrong permanently and Palmer.
-
Very, seeing as that would leave us unbalanced and lacking width. And I dont want Gallagher back. Seeing as Gallagher was mooted with a 7m move last week, safe to say that wont happen.
-
Whilst I understand those saying we need to take our time etc, the importance of a strong start is particularly prevalent this season, and something I totally agree with. Sadly some people see this valid point and miscontrue it as mindless negativity. The first 6 fixtures are very favourable, albeit obviously not easy, we are on a high so its about maintaining momentum, and weve had bad starts in each of the last 2 seasons. That said, I hope that the team that played v Everton can get a good result and we can have a few new additions within the 18 on Saturday, Palmer included that are worth waiting for and we can win regardless.
-
Agreed. If we are only able to pay fees for 2 players, you would think a squad centre back would be somewhere where we would just sign a loan or whatevers cheapest. Its all about allocation of resources.
-
Doesnt make any sense. The actual size of the budget, ie the amount Mowbray has to spend, is the owners decision. Their involvement thereafter is irrelevant, what is important is how much they have given Mowbray. Agree that Oliveria would be a good signing, link or personal suggestion? Cant see him being affordable.
-
Theres a hypothetical aspect to your post (weighing up what youd be happy with, and what you wouldnt) that I share very similar standards to and that I have similar thoughts to. If what you would want to appease you didnt materialise, then the likelihood would be down to a lack of money given to Mowbray, therefore the brunt of the blame would be at the owners door. Saying "trust Mowbray" not only isnt a valid counter-argument to such a post, but its irrelevant and tiresome.
-
Continuously missing the point. I dont trust Venkys who are the ones in charge of giving Mowbray money. And I never said that he wont get any money anyway.

Championship 2018-19

Yeah -
Chaddy. No one is saying that they dont trust Mowbray, so please stop suggesting that.
-
Often the negative vibe is peoples points being misconstrued and taken out of context, perceived to be negative. No one has said the manager isnt a great fit for the club, or that they dont trust him, for example, yet thats one myth peddled down peoples throata a lot. No one has said that they wont judge after the deadline either, people have often hypothetical conversations, again about things theyd like and expect, and are told not to judge yet. The fact that we havent signed our targets yet could be for a multitude of reasons, I doubt Mowbray sees it as ideal, he said he wanted his business done early and obviously weve had slow starts in our last two seasons so its a valid point yet its misconstrued as blind panic.
-
Im very big on playing players in their best positions. But I think Armstrong demonstrated last season, albeit at a lower level that hes very good from that position. His pace is obviously a key in him being played there anyway when he sees himself as a striker, but he managed to continue to score goals from that position and also kept the width more than I expected him to as a natural striker, giving us natural width and stetching teams. Obviously if he played as a striker here he would be doing it instead of Graham who is so good at being a foil and doing the dirty work. Many times it was Grahams intelligence and hold up that freed up Armstrong to get in behind.
-
Which, obviously dependant on the quality of player, would be happily accepted by the majority. The point was, if it was just loan signings from here on in, people wouldnt be happy. Like you said, im sure it wont be.
-
Chaddy, thats the thing, they arent! We dont know what is going to happen in terms of signings as you said. People are saying that if we only sign loans theyll be annoyed, if theres a mix then theyll be happy. Loans are good as long as the club isnt overly reliant on them. People saying this are then having their words taken out of context by people seemingly insistent on making people appear to be unrealistic, negative and pessimistic. No idea why.
-
Loosely though. Armstrong from what ive seen is very much on the fringes, going to be nowhere near their team, and Chapman playing constantly with the second string.
