Lurid Coat Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I am also a fan of Mendes' (although I have to admit that I haven't seen him in action as much as I would have liked to). He's definitely a player that I believe can do a decent job for Rovers.

RibbleValleyRover Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Nicko, just wondering if there was any interest in Roque after his fantastic first season for us? I'm very confident we can keep hold of him for at least another season, but was just wondering if any clubs might be sniffing around?
vintageadidas Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Roque is very happy at Rovers! I know this for a fact. Dont forget we took a gamble on him as he did with us and he is a loyal guy. It is his OH that may determine if he is here next season. I say no more.

Manc Rover Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Philipp Degen - very good player but Liverpool is a bigger attraction than us, i too would like him in our team. I would personally like to see Pedro Mendes in a Rovers shirt next season. I have read that Arry is thinking of parting with him. Only 29, good vision, good link up play, has that killer through ball ability, very athletic and scores wonder goals. I also rate Mendes but apparently all the Pompey team live in posh Sandbanks on the south coast, so could you see him uprooting from the so-called English riviera to the North West? Unlikely but hey, you never know!
joey_big_nose Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Yeah, Mendes is exactly the sort of player we need. To be honest with what looks like half of the clubs lashing out serious money this year there are going to be a lot of unwanted players kickng around on the market. Sean Davis, Mendes, Huddlestone, Sidwell, Ben Haim, Tanio, Pizarro, Pennant, Kewell, Bendtnar, most of the Man City team, pretty much everyone at Newcastle apart from the strikers... If the market gets flooded we could find quite a few domestic bargains. Loads of these players are very good and not massively worse than those who are in the first team for these players. With careful handling they can be rejuvinated.
Hughesy Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Of those, I would like us to seriously look at Huddlestone, Bradley, Bendtnar, aswell as Milner, Soares and also Valencia (but he would be costly).
thenodrog Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Just heard there is a 'Hughes to Celtic' rumour on the grapevine. Have you any knowledge of this Alan?
nicko Posted April 25, 2008 Author Posted April 25, 2008 Just heard there is a 'Hughes to Celtic' rumour on the grapevine. Have you any knowledge of this Alan? I think there will be a vacancy...wee Gordie set to leave. But I believe it will be an ex-Celtic man or an Irishman. Fortunately old Sparky is not in either category.
Scotty Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Just heard there is a 'Hughes to Celtic' rumour on the grapevine. Have you any knowledge of this Alan? I think the bigger worry is if Moyes goes to Celtic and Everton go after Hughes.
modes98 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I think the bigger worry is if Moyes goes to Celtic I heard that a while back, mind you people shot it down as Everton were doing so well. I still think they won't maintain there current success and Moyes knows that. I'm not sure if Hughes would risk ruining his reputation by going to them when they are set for a fall.
thenodrog Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 The only attraction at Celtic for either imo would be to enjoy relative success in the Champions League and most importantly gain experience of such. CL experience is obviously an important requirement for a really top job and could easily provide a back door route to managing a mega club. Either way both have probably taken their respective clubs as far as they can imo.
brian_gallagher85 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 True, but that experience hasn't really done McLeish any favours
thenodrog Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 True but rem McLeish has never played or achieved relative success as a manager in the English Prem has he?
Fife Rover Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 True but rem McLeish has never played or achieved relative success as a manager in the English Prem has he? But then neither had Moyes before he went to Everton.
Oklahoma Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I would personally like to see Pedro Mendes in a Rovers shirt next season. I have read that Arry is thinking of parting with him. Only 29, good vision, good link up play, has that killer through ball ability, very athletic and scores wonder goals. Agreed. But news here in Portugal report that he might come back to Portugal to play for his favourite team, VSC Guimaraes, who is currently second and migh secure a direct entry to the Champions league.
S15 Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I think the bigger worry is if Moyes goes to Celtic and Everton go after Hughes. No doubt. The moment Moyes leaves that club is the moment Hughes leaves ours. The only possible saving grace would be Alan Irvine sorting out PNE big time next season.
EwoodGlory Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Is it true Spurs have signed Modric? Quite a capture.
nicko Posted April 26, 2008 Author Posted April 26, 2008 If you are Modric and his agent - you would be happy to go to Newcastle for talks and make all of the other potential bidders and talkers come up with the dough. It's obviously game on in that particular chase. I rest my case on that one...he is using everybody right now. If Spurs have signed him it's a coup...but I believe there is at least one more twist in this.
frosty Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Although brief, this was on the Spurs club website. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/artic...lane260408.html
EwoodGlory Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Yeah, surely a champions league club will come in soon? Newcastle trying to make an early move not quite work out then . Found this after looking at the gossip column this morning. Blackburn are chasing midfielder Radoslaw Majewski and defender Dariusz Dudka from Polish sides Groclin Dyskobolia and Wisla Krakow respectively. Blackburn Rovers are interested in one of Polish football’s brightest talents, Radoslaw Majewski from Groclin Grodzisk. It is reported that they offer 3M€ for the young Polish playmaker. Polish media report that the initial deal has already been signed. Linkage Cuevas started for Libertad last night but failed to score, they got beat 1-0 by 2 de Mayo (strange name).
nicko Posted April 26, 2008 Author Posted April 26, 2008 Trying to check out the Polish story...price seems sensible, but it's a new name to me. It's a long time since a Pole made it big here. I doubt it, but I am willing to stand corrected.

Majewski sounds worth a shot from the info on that link, not too expensive so not a big gamble. I think they have our style of football confused with Bolton though!! I was at the Brazil v Poland game in the U20 World Cup in Montreal last summer (Poland beat Brazil 1-0 despite being down to 10 men for an hour), I have to say I was REALLY impressed with the technical ability of the young Poles, they played Brazil off the pitch. The future looks quite promising for that team. Dawid Janczyk looked a good un up front for them.
Russ Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Nicko, Is the Philip Degen to Liverpool story a cert? I hoped we would look at him, a good young right back, and with out strong swiss connection at the club I thought we might hold some sway. Is he indeed destined for a bigger better club than ours??
