  1. What a nasty little team Colombia are. Hope we can keep our heads as they're clearly trying to rile us up. We're definitely the better team, just have to open them up somehow.
  2. I'd fancy us against Sweden, but Switzerland would be more of a challenge. People calling this the "easy" route to the final forget that we aren't one of the nations who traditionally go far in tournaments. We've got a big reputation but realistically it hasn't counted for anything since Euro 96.
  3. I wouldn't analyse the game with Belgium to that extent. It was two completely reshuffled teams contesting the match largely like a friendly as neither particularly wanted to win. That said Colombia will be our first proper test in this tournament, imo. We'll see tomorrow whether the hype can be justified.
  4. Japan had been going short with their corners most of the game, presumably because they knew they weren't going to win headers against the Belgians. Why they then decided to cross it in like that at the end I'm not sure - it had disaster written all over it. Naivety I suppose, although realistically I don't think Japan would have held back Belgium for another 30 minutes. They were spent. Belgium needed to cross more often as they had the beating of Japan in the air practically every time. Bringing on Fellaini obviously helped in that regard. Brazil/Belgium should be very interesting.
  5. Yeah, when I saw the keeper dive early I thought the guy would easily slot it to the other side. Instead he just punts it in the same direction at a perfect height. I appreciate it's a high pressure situation, but that one was a gimme.
  6. A collection of some of the worst penalty takers in recent memory. Jeez... half of them looked like they'd never kicked a ball before. Modric very lucky that his penalty went through, could easily have missed two out of two. No reason to fear Croatia based on tonight.
  7. Hmmm. No comment on Russia/Spain. As for England, still have a horrible feeling we'll get beaten by Colombia.
  8. Watching Belgium in this match is like watching that Simpsons football parody where three players are passing it between themselves repeatedly.
  9. Nine. Don't think either team is bothered if they lose this one.
  10. Unbelievable stuff. Well done South Korea. Going home but they can be incredibly proud of that performance. Bigger nations would have crumbled.
  11. Amazing! I love VAR.
  12. Waiting for another 95th minute German winner. South Korea look stronger than Sweden defensively but I'm sure it's coming.
  13. Germany looking poor again. I imagine they'll win as South Korea are significantly worse in terms of talent, but this isn't the Germany I'm used to seeing at tournaments.
  14. Yep. You knew it was coming, every time Argentina attacked in the last 15 minutes it looked like they were going to score. It was Germany/Sweden all over again. All too reminiscent of watching bigger club/smaller club in the Premier League. I watch the world cup to get away from that, not see more of it. Nigeria also missed two or three golden opportunities to make it 2-1. They really do only have themselves to blame. Amazing that an Argentina side that got hammered 3-0 by Croatia and drew 1-1 with what has turned out to be a pretty poor Iceland side still came second with a point to spare. If you ain't good enough you ain't good enough, and Nigeria and Iceland just weren't good enough. Somehow Argentina were, but I think their luck will probably run out in the next round. There are still a lot of problems there.
  15. On the plus side I think we'd have more chance of getting beaten by Nigeria than by Argentina. I'd fancy us against them. Honestly right now I'd fancy us against pretty much anybody. It's been a tournament where the vast majority of the big nations have played like utter shit and still gotten out of their groups. It's obviously not a good look for the competition but we have bucked the trend in that we have looked very convincing and fully deserve our place in the knockout stages. I just hope we can keep it going, because there is nothing to fear in this tournament.
  16. Much like all of the other smaller nations in this tournament, Nigeria missing easy chances will contribute to them going out. So many undeserving bigger nations going through. It's a bit depressing really. Hope that whoever gets Argentina in the next round absolutely demolishes them.
  17. The officials just don't seem to understand how VAR is supposed to work. They're using it for slightly contentious decisions rather than clear and obvious errors. Yes it's new and things won't go perfectly as a result, but as Shearer just pointed out, should they be trialling a system officials clearly don't fully understand at the most important tournament in world football?
  18. Fair to say Spain and Portugal are nothing to be scared of.
  19. I think we'd still have 6/6 but you're right, it would have been a very different style of play. We probably would have beaten Tunisia more comfortably but not scored as many against Panama. Time to see how Southgate's team deals with a real attacking threat in Belgium.
  20. At least they calmed down a bit. Was worried they would injure one of our boys, but maybe their manager had a word at half time and told them to cut it out. Nothing to gain from playing like they did in the first half.
  21. Great result. We took our foot off the gas in the second half but that's understandable. No point risking injury or exhaustion when the game was already wrapped up. My only slight concern is that our defence was breached a few times by a poor Panama team, so that's something for Southgate to analyse. Overall a hugely positive result and I'm looking forward to the Belgium game.
  22. We means England.
  23. True, but it'll be a good indicator of how far we can expect to go. Belgium will be our first game against what you'd call genuinely decent opposition.
  24. Better hope Belgium don't get too many free kicks/corners!
  25. I'm going back to calling them rubbish. And that's being polite.
