And yet still nobody can score. Did Spain and Portugal use up most of the group stage's quota or something?
-
Unless France step up their game significantly they're going to be sent home by the first decent team they face. It's possible they're saving their effort for the more difficult matches, but if I was a French supporter I'd be pretty concerned. Peru generally gave a good account of themselves but like a lot of teams in this tournament look very poor in front of goal.
-
Going to be so gutted if France end up with six points from two games. They've been dreadful.
-
Peru are useless in front of goal. It's why they're going to be going home very soon.

Had to be Paul Hurst, didn't it? I think our first match after relegation was Ipswich at Portman Road as well. I remember very distinctly the away fans loudly chanting "KEAN OUT" as that snake slithered into the away dugout.
-
I don't think anybody except Russia has really shown what they can do yet. Belgium had a good second half against Panama, but... it's Panama. Seems like most are trying to get to the knock out stages using the least amount of effort. Makes sense but other than Spain/Portugal it hasn't made for an exciting start to the tournament. All of these set piece goals though. Allardyce would be in his element!

I've been impressed with Iran so far. A lot of energy, defending like their lives depend on it, but have also managed a few counter attacks and looked dangerous on the break. Spain really struggling to break them down.

He wouldn't have been Everton manager if he was still England manager, though, so I'm not sure he would have had the same insight.

I was actually shocked when I remembered Rooney was only 24 at WC 2010. I think because he started his international career so early it's easy to forget he's still only 32. Yet whilst Rooney is now seen as old and past it, 33 year old Ronaldo continues to be Portugal's star man. I do think if Allardyce had remained as manager Rooney would be in our squad for this tournament, though.

Amazing how a Russian team who couldn't play worth a damn before the tournament are suddenly apparently one of the best teams in the competition. Granted they've played two horrendous teams, but it's funny how both have basically rolled over for the hosts.
-
It definitely seems to be that way. That wouldn't necessarily be an issue if VAR was being used properly, but if last night was anything to go by we still have a long way to go before it's anywhere close to being applied accurately. https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-06-19/world-cup-2018-var-video-referee-how-does-it-work-russia-decisions-explained/ Reading this it's impossible for me to understand how VAR was utilised (or perhaps more appropriately not utilised) last night.

No, he's terrible. Can only assume he's being brought in as second/third choice, but I don't even think he's good enough for that. If there's literally any chance of him ending up between the sticks in a PL match then the club is taking a huge risk signing him.

I can understand there being a few teething issues, and there may never be a 100% clear view of something which is deemed an "obvious error", but even a casual football viewer would have clearly been able to see that Kane was fouled twice in the box last night. It wasn't even debatable. How supposedly professional officials can't see that is beyond me. There's no excuse for this kind of incompetence anymore, and if genuinely terrible decisions like last night are made then somebody should be held accountable. Of course Southgate and England won't rock the boat because that's not their style, but we really should. Goal Difference could still be a decider in this group, after all, and I'd say we were robbed of at least two chances to score from the spot yesterday. Should we convert one and the game goes 2-1 then it changes everything - Tunisia have no choice but to press forward a bit and chances are we slip in behind them and finish it 3 or 4-1. Instead the officials let Tunisia get away with murder the entire match, allowing them to sit deeper and deeper and drag the game quality down to the depths with fouls, play-acting and time wasting.
-
By absence I basically meant it might as well have been turned off, as it never once corrected the ineptness of the officials. If they can't catch the two obvious fouls on Kane from last night they might as well shut it down.
-
If I was Southgate I'd be demanding an explanation over the absence of VAR last night. We've already seen at least one penalty given by VAR for wrestling in the box, so where was it last night when it blatantly happened twice? Yes we won in the end, but we were badly let down by the implementation (or lack thereof) of the VAR system. How can anybody have confidence in it if such obvious fouls are missed/ignored?
-
For wrestling maybe. It surely can't be football based on that display. Absolute joke of a team and I was delighted to see them crying at the end. They should be ashamed of coming to the World Cup and playing in such a negative, cynical, boring fashion. You might only get one shot, have a go for goodness sake, don't spend the match falling over (special mention to the Tunisian who fell over after the ball was kicked at his midriff), wasting time, hitting Rock Bottom's on opponents in the penalty area and just generally being a nasty, dirty team. It's no way to make a reputation. For the record I have no problem with playing tough, but Tunisia tonight were disgraceful and were very lucky the ref seemed to be either blind or bent.
-
Thank god for that. Can somebody go and plug var back in now?
-
What is it about the England shirt that turns decent young players to shit at tournaments? It's quite impressive really.
-
Another shitshow from Sterling. Rashford's chance to stake a claim.
-
We can't keep passing it across the back line in future, better teams will punish us.
-
Our non-set piece crossing is diabolical.
-
Did they turn VAR off for this one? Wtf?
-
We've played pretty well but a moment of stupidity means we're drawing instead of winning. Keep playing like this and we should win, but we need to stop passing it around the back like Spain-lite. The support isn't there from the midfield to do that and we keep getting caught out. Need to be more direct in getting the ball into midfield and pass around from there.
