Rovers vs Rotherham
Ewood Ace replied to BankEnd Rover's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Leutwiler Nyambe Lenihan Mulgrew Williams Reed Smallwood Palmer Dack Rothwell Graham Subs: Fisher, Rodwell, Travis, Bennett, Conway, Armstrong, Brereton Hope we're a bit more positive with Evans out and play Reed central and play Palmer on the right. I also think Rothwell offers more than Armstrong (who has disappointed this season). Rotherham have only scored 3 goals in 8 away games picking up just 2 points so let's hope we take the game to them and start on the front foot. We don't want another drab lethargic performance like Saturday or against Millwall and Reading. Both full backs need to be changed as that has been our weak area in recent weeks. And as Mulgrew has been named in the Scottish squad you would expect that he will play this weekend. -

Expectations for the season
Ewood Ace replied to K-Hod's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I thought that we would be bottom half somewhere between 15th and 19th probably. Rovers have performed how I thought they would (plenty of hard work and endeavour, with some quality from Dack) however I have been shocked at how poor a standard the league is the only team that have impressed me have been Sheffield United everyone else has either been bang average or poor. If we can keep keys players fit, strengthen in January and be a little bit more positive at home then I think we can be in the hunt for the play offs. -
They needed to effectively win their last 6 games to stay up. Having won just one game in 30 accumulating just 20 points from 32 matches. Not even the most optimistic of West Brom fans would have thought that they had any chance of surviving. And if West Brom thought they had any chance of staying up they would not have appointed a manager when they sacked Pardew.
-
They were 10 points adrift with six games when he took over they were as good as down. He took 11 points from 6 games and still went down by 5 points taking into account goal difference he would have needed to win all 6 games to stay up.

It wasn't pretty (but have any of our home games been?) but a good 3 points against the leagues form team. Reed is not a wide man and he is the best central midfielder at the club he can do what Evans and Smallwood do defensively just as well and he also gives you much more in offence as well. Tony needs to make a tough decision and drop one of Smallwood and Evans in order for Reed to play there. That also allows us to bring Palmer in to the team to play out wide and it will give us some much needed creativity because with the side that started yesterday had too many soldiers and too few artists. Both full backs poor again we need to sign a right back to cover for Nyambe as Bennett is not up to the job, hopefully Nyambe will start next week. As for Bell he really is awful (I wonder at times if he is fully awake) once Charlie is back fit lets hope Tony sees sense and puts Williams to left back. I thought that Williams and Lenihan were both excellent yesterday, very dominant even against the dangerous Matt Smith. I was disappointed to see Travis not included in the squad yesterday we need to loan him out in January as he is too good not to be playing and we don't want to risk losing him permanently. I'm surprised he hasn't been given a chance at full back given how poor Bell and Bennett have been and as he showed last week he can seemingly play anywhere. Armstrong did ok but he needs to find an end product if he wants to nail down a regular place. I thought Rothwell and Palmer both did well and made a difference, both for me should be starting. Also good to see Brereton have an impact (QPR can have no complaints clear penalty) let's hope that gives him a much needed confidence boost.
-
Has looked much better than Armstrong this season. Palmer has some skill and is a strong lad whereas Armstrong is one dimensional and eased of the ball to easily.
-
Dissappointing to see Palmer dropped and Reed stuck out wide in order to accomodate Smallwood and Evans. I think Tony needs to make a tough decision and decide which of the two should partner Reed in his best and preferred position. And as Nyambe is on the bench he must be fit (and he played in the week) so why is our only right back not playing especially as Bennett has been poor there.
-
Just because Mowbray has done a fantastic job it doesn't mean that he doesn't get somethings wrong. He's not infallible just ask Celtic fans. Like every manager he is capable of signing a dud even Ferguson signed a few in his time at United as has Guardiola in his time in management. We can only base Brereton on what we have seen so far and it has not been very good (I don't think anyone would argue otherwise), hopefully he will look better when given a chance through the middle. I would also agree with you that there are question marks about Armstrong at this level as he looks one dimensional and weak and you can see why he has struggled at this level previously.
-
I'm not worried about what he does in training I'm worried about what he does on the pitch and on the pitch he looks lost out wide. We need a striker not another wide option ( we already have Palmer, Rothwell, Bennett, Reed, Conway, and Armstrong who have all played there) so surely this should have been noted before taking such an expensive gamble.
-
I don't doubt his commitment but that shouldn't mean he is guaranteed a start is he a better right back than Nyambe clearly not and it's preposterous to suggest that he should start over Nyambe. Is he a better option in the centre than Smallwood, Evans, Reed or Rodwell again clearly not despite it being his best position. As for on the wing he may start away from home when we are expecting to see less of the ball but tomorrow we are at home and should be looking to attack and in Rothwell and Palmer you have two players who are creative and who unlike Bennett can go past a player and in Palmer's case he has an eye for goal as well.
-
Think how bad he must look through the middle
-
Bennett our most important player? I'd say Dack, Graham, Mulgrew, Reed, Evans, Lenihan, Nyambe and Raya are all more important than him. You say Bennett is the first name on the team sheet but for me he is not our best player in any position. What position do you have him as the first name in. Right back? Nyambe a far better option, Bennett as been poor there. Central Midfield? Probably Bennett's best position but is he playing there ahead of Reed, Evans, Smallwood and even Rodwell not for me. On the wing? For me he lacks creativity in the final third. I'd rather see the flair of Rothwell and Palmer out there or for some games the directness of Armstrong they can all beat a player with skill or pace something Bennett rarely does, they also are more likely for a goal than Bennett.
-
You'd have thought that the manager and scouting department would have noticed this before splashing out such a sum of money. Poor
-
You forgot to mention Bennett's horrific performance at Swansea. He is not a right back he's out of position and dives in far too often and he is also skinned too easily at times. Sides target him there like they used to Nyambe. We have competition at left back why not at right back? Or you could just keep it simple and bench Bennett for Nyambe.
-
He's still young at a new club at and playing level above what he has played at before. He's a very tidy on the ball and someone who I think will continue to improve the more he plays. He does need to do some work on the defensive side of his game and stay on his feet a bit more instead of sliding in. But for me him and Palmer are our best two option to play wide of Dack in a three behind the striker.
-
Graham won't have played for 10 days come Saturday and that was only for an hour so he should be fit for 90 minutes on Saturday.

Doesn't sound like Raya or Mulgrew will be playing so I would go with the following. Leutwiler Nyambe Lenihan Rodwell Williams Reed Evans Palmer Dack Rothwell Graham Subs: Fisher, Downing, Travis, Smallwood, Bennett, Conway, Armstrong I hope Mowbray goes for it at home and plays with a proper striker along with the attacking flair of Dack, Palmer and Rothwell in behind. However I fear that he may go with a more cautious approach and play one of Bennett or Reed out wide.

WBA VS ROVERS - SAT 27TH
Ewood Ace replied to Dreams of 1995's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Second half I thought we were fantastic yesterday. West Brom couldn't live with us in the second half until Raya went of and then I thought our make shift defence saw it out brilliantly for an excellent battling point. I actually think with 11 on the pitch we would have gone on to win. I have to say I'm not a fan of this not playing with a proper striker and I don't understand it when we bought someone who is supposed to be a striker for £7 Million and it is also a waste of someone with Dack's talent to be the lone striker. The Ref was shocking turned down two clear penalties for us. West Brom looked ordinary spent most the time passing the ball along the back line when they had it and only looked dangerous when they countered and got the ball quickly up the flanks. Raya- 6.5 Made a good save from Rodriguez (who somehow missed the rebound) but his kicking was awful getting us into trouble on numerous occasions in the first half including one that lead to the corner for the goal. As Rodriguez wasn't booked I hope that the FA will have a look at it as on the replays it looks like he could have done a lot more to get of Raya's way. Bennett 6.5 Was better than at Swansea but still out of position and diving in too much. Mulgrew- Injured making a very good challenge. Let's hope he is back quickly. Rodwell-7 Looked much improved on Tuesday nights performance. Handled the dangerous Sako very well and was composed on the ball. Williams-7.5 Was all over the place first half and bailed out by Raya when he carelessly gave the ball away. Second half he was much better making some vital blocks including one in a goal line scramble right at the death. Smallwood-7.5 Worked his socks of in midfield and wasn't afraid to come for the ball from West Brom Corners when in goal. Reed 9.5- A fantastic goal to cap a sensational performance. He has to play in central midfield from now on he's solid enough out wide but in the middle he offers the same work rate and tackling as Smallwood and Evans but as well as that he gets forward and has real quality on the ball. Rothwell-7 Looked tidy again and I think he is going to get better and better the more he plays. Needs to do some work on the defensive side of his game and stay on his feet a bit more instead of sliding in. Also should have done better with a chance just before half time. Conway-6.5 I think his days as a starter are finished he looked well of the pace bar a couple decent crosses. However like against Leeds his experience was helpful in the closing stages, that is probably the role he should be used in from now on. Palmer-8 I really like this lad but if he doesn't play more I think he will be back at Chelsea in January. A criticism that has been aimed at Palmer is that he doesn't work back that certainly could not be said of him yesterday. He looked our most dangerous player in attack with some good runs including one that I thought should have resulted in a penalty. Also very strong on the ball and won a good number of headers from long balls which we needed with Graham not playing. I thought that he was very unlucky to be substituted and I hope he retains his place. Dack-6.5- Struggled in a position that clearly doesn't suit him although a nice bit of play to set Rothwell up. But he worked hard particularly late on despite being knackered or maybe even carrying a knock. Subs: Bell 6.5 Did better in the second half as he actually got forward and looked dangerous for once. However he was a fault for the goal with Dawson wanting the ball more, he needs to gain focus and show a bit more desire in his defending. Travis-7.5 Showed what a great character he has to go from not being in the squad to play at centre back against one of the leagues best attacks yet he did not look one bit out of place and very composed on the ball. Armstrong-4 I thought he was very lazy when he came on. You'd have been expecting him to put pressure on their defence and lead from the front which sadly he didn't do. -

I'm unconvinced by Armstrong at this level. He's one dimensional when he gets the ball and he's a bit to weak for my liking. Also I wouldn't say that Palmer is any worse than Armstrong for tracking back defensively in fact at Bolton I thought he worked hard out of possession. Palmer has that bit of flair to create something which we lack with the exception of Dack. We've scored just 1 goal from open play in our last 4 games and that came from Palmer showing strength and skill. -

I don't think Bell has shown any sign of improving and looks a poor defender. It's no coincidence that the only clean sheet we have kept in our last 6 league games is when Bell didn't play. -
Mowbray is absolutely right we are a striker short (as well as a centre back). But the reason we are a striker short is because he choses to play Brereton and Armstrong out of position on the wing. And if Tony feels feel we are still a striker short why did he spend £7 Million on Brereton to play wide when he already had Rothwell, Palmer, Bennett, Conway and even Armstrong who can play out there. It seems to me that Mowbray is trying to overcomplicate things in a bid to ease pressure on Brereton rather than giving him a go in his preferred position to see what he has got. Surely he didn't believe that Samuel was going to be the answer as an alternative to Graham given that he wasn't the answer last season is League 1.

The worrying thing is that we have got a near fully fit squad and yet last night 6 players played some or all of the match out of position. The most worrying thing is that one injury at centre back and we are playing a central midfielder there. We would been better of spending £7 million on a centre back and an alternative to Graham rather than a striker who is stuck out wide where he looks hopelessly lost.
