When I say 5 at the back I mean 2 WB's and 3 CB's - so 5-3-2 or 3-4-3 is same difference. If it's 4 at the back it means Edun in midfield.

After the mid-week mauling, and considering Sheff Utd are strong at home, going to 5 at the back is probably a good shout.

No, your original argument was VDB wasn't being signed for a variety of reasons, none of which had anything to do with guaranteed playing time. You specifically ruled that option out. I just put it back on the table. Ayala and Wharton may be better than SVDG. Carter & AP might be just as good. We don't know. So Rovers may have been honest and said you'll have to fight for your place. SVDB however may be better than any of Sunderland's CB's and Neil will be in a great position to know that. Maybe he's told SVDG that he's his first choice if he signs. I'm just amazed you can dismiss that as an option.
