  1. The bowler should have stopped in mid delivery, stepped right back to the wicket, and then said “ Next time, I’ll run you out “. Fair enough after that. Headline in my paper today says the “ MCC states the win was properly officiated “. Of course it was, that’s not the issue, as soon as the Indian player appealed the umpire had to give the England player out.
  2. I almost got run out in a similar sort of way. I’d played and missed at a ball with the wicket keeper standing up. He’d had it his gloves for a while so I wandered out of my crease. The keeper whipped the balls off and appealed. Before the umpire could make up his mind the captain of the opposition, who was fielding at first slip, said to keeper “ Don’t be a dick, put the bails back on “.
  3. You’re wrong there mate. Sutton marked Tugay out of the game at Ewood. Even the dogs in the street know that.
  4. It’s really sad that we have so called international players that can only play on one side of the pitch. Keith Newton played right back and left back for England without a problem.
  5. The accepted rule in my experience was you warned the batter first. After that if they did it again it was fair enough. What the Indian player did yesterday was unacceptable.
  6. I know who it is now but in took me a while. It’s a good competition. My first thought was Brian Hill who played on the left wing in the early 1970’s.
  7. It’s like watching another sport entirely. Too much running around and not enough sideways passing.
  8. Thanks but you should also salute my collection of Rovers related books.
  9. I think I know the player in the photo but the number on the shorts is fooling me. I think it should be number 11 if the player is who I think he is. I’ll let somebody else win the free shirt. I stopped wearing replica shirts when it became obvious that I was no longer a player of any standing. That shirt is probably my favourite shirt of all. It’s a beauty. They did a warm weather short sleeved version as well.
  10. He got on the ball a lot more but nothing came of it. At least he went looking for work. Foden never came out at half time for me. Sterling has learnt nothing about football since he was 17.
  11. I was disapointed with Grealish last night. All he seems to do is wander about with the ball looking to get fouled.
  12. I saw Lofthouse play once at the tail end of his career. Very much like Shearer in style. He chased a long bouncing ball out onto the right wing. When he caught up with it he was about 3 yards in from the touchline and the byline. He just smashed the ball on the volley past an amazed goalie who thought it was going out and was getting set to take a goal kick !
  13. Go on any other clubs message board and they’ll be saying exactly the same. I’m sorry but I’m too long in the tooth for this” Kings New Clothes “ malarkey. If I’ve just wasted two hours of my life watching a rubbish performance I’ll say so. That goes for Rovers equally. We can’t play this walking football. As soon as we upped the tempo late on we looked a better team all together.
  14. Looks like the Beeb, Sky and ITV dodged a bullet. That was 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back. I’d rather have Mowbray than Southgate. That tells you how highly I rate him.
  15. He was tremendous when he took over from Mick McGrath at left half for half a season. It gave him the opportunity to show his true all round footballing abilities. Centre half limited him somewhat. He’s still the best centre half I ever saw in the flesh.
  16. I like Southgate as a person but as an England manager ? Never in a million years.
  17. I forgot he was playing in the second half.
  18. Best right back in the world at the 1962 World Cup.
  19. Yep, everybody looked about 20 years older than they really were.
  20. A pal of mine was an England international at schoolboy level. He played in the same team as Barry Bridges, Willy Carlin, Warick Rimmer, John Talbut etc. He was showing me his memorabilia one day and we came across a programme for Manchester Schools ( his team ) v Lancashire schools. F Pickering ( Blackburn ) was on the right wing for Lancashire schools believe or not ! I never had Fred down as a winger. If you remember Paddy Daly for Rovers he was in the Manchester team. My pal signed for United when he left school but he had a career ending knee injury at 17.
  21. David Unsworth, who was talked about regarding the Roverd job, is the new manager at Oldham.
  22. You missed a treat. We really went for it at 2-1 down. Bit different to todays lot. I remember getting in to Old Trafford about 5 minutes late and it was already 1-1. We were losing 2-1 with about 5 minutes to go and not looking like scoring so me and my pal decided to leave the game to find the coach. That game ended 2-2 !
  23. I’ve lived around here ( Rochdale ) since I was 5 years old and the valley up from town through Whitworth, Facit, Britannia, Bacup etc has always been populated with mostly Burnley fans. Wether people could go Rovers is irrelevant, the fact is not many of them did.
  24. Bacup and Whitworth have always been strongholds for Burnley. Back in the day I’d get the coach in Rochdale town centre and it would pick up lots in Whitworth and Bacup on the way to Burnley for games. I don’t recall any other Rovers fans getting on. I just kept my mouth shut and said nothing.
  25. Jim Smith, who was Derby manager at the time, told the story that he’d heard that Hodgson was interested in Dailly. He passed it on to his chairman who said “ Remember Jim, not a penny less than £2 Million if they get on to you “. Apparently Hodgson’s opening offer was £5 Million and Jim Smith talked it up to £5.25 Million. £5 Million more than he was worth !
