  1. But let's not forget that of those 73 seasons in the top division some 44 seasons were between 1888 and 1936. Since football restarted after the war the majority of our time has been spent outside the top flight. The Jack Walker/Walker Trust era was very much a golden period in our modern history. I remember John Williams saying at the time of Big Sam's appointment, that if we got relegated it would be very difficult to get back. Many of us remember the 25 years in exile after the 1965-66 relegation season. I would agree that we are not a Third Division club but modern history suggests we are a club that spends long periods in the second tier. I think that is a point that is being missed in any transfer talk. This virus has impacted all global businesses and Venkys are no exception. With their Charitable Foundation to support - which is of vital importance to the people of Pune and its surrounding areas - I suspect that Blackburn Rovers is even further down the agenda than normal. I think Mowbray was quoted a few weeks ago talking about loans, freebies and promoting youth players to cover gaps of any players we have to sell. I suspect this is the reality of where we are at. Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised but being realistic I not expecting any earth shattering moves in the transfer market.
  2. Very sad news. Remember him making his debut and what a superb player he was. Started out as a winger but developed into an outstanding midfield player. A key member of the Third Division Championship side under Gordon Lee and such a wonderfully gifted player. RIP Stuart.
  3. Not sure how they could sell season tickets at the moment - aren't most of the staff still on furlough? With the uncertainty with regard to when supporters will actually be allowed into grounds - and that may be impacted throughout the season with local lockdowns - I can understand why they are reluctant to start selling at this moment in time.
  4. Witty's comment today that we are at the limit of what can be opened up very telling. I doubt fans will be allowed in any ground this side of Christmas and perhaps for even longer. Really don't see how Leagues One and Two will operate next season without any income and the cost of testing etc. I suspect many Championship clubs may find it a struggle over the next few months. I suspect the transfer window is the last thing on the minds of many clubs at the moment.
  5. In a perfect world young players go out on loan to make their mistakes at other clubs. However, in the past young players came into the first team and often made howlers, but the good ones came through that initial baptism of fire and went on to have good careers with the club and elsewhere. If money is tight that it may well that those youngsters have to learn from their mistakes whilst playing in the Championship with Rovers. Supporters will have to show patience with these youngsters and help get them through that initial learning period. I have no doubt that Joe Rankin-Costello and John Buckley are going to be regulars in the senior squad next season. Carter may go out on loan if we are able to bring in a replacement for Tosin - if not then he will be alongside Magloire, Wharton and Grayson as a member of the senior squad.
  6. He's been out with a back injury but is on the way back to fitness.
  7. Why? Charlton finished in the bottom three because over the course of 46 games they were not good enough to finish higher. Nothing to do with anyone else. If Charlton had taken enough points over the course of the season they would have stayed up. Charlton fans need to look to their owners, manager and players for the reason why they went down - simple as that!
  8. Venus was there with Mowbray. There is a post match interview with Mowbray on the club website, the tone of which suggests he will be here next season. The interview illustrated why he was looking so displeased during the game - basically frustrated with the lack of consistency of certain players and suggested those who cannot deliver the consistency required would not be here next season. Lowe was upset at the gamesmanship when Luton got rid of the balls that were part of the covid-19 protocols so that play was held up waiting for the one ball to be retrieved. Personally, I felt before the season started that our squad was a mid-table one at best and would need luck to get towards the top six. Long term injuries to Cunningham, Dack and Evans really didn't help. Has Mowbray been faultless this season - obviously not. He has made mistakes, like all managers, but he has made progress - albeit of the slow and steady variety. I've seen nothing to suggest that he won't be given at least one, if not both the remaining years of his contract to try to achieve promotion. With little or no money likely to be available we may well have to rely on the young players next season who will have to "learn on the job" as it were. Carter made mistakes last night but no more than you would expect of a youngster breaking into the team - I'm old enough to remember some clangers that a young Mike England made - one spectacular own goal in particular that any centre-forward would have been proud to claim. With the new season just seven or eight weeks away, Mowbray is going to need to know the budget he is working with sooner rather than later. The fact that every decision has to be signed off in Pune is what really hampers any progress. Yes, money is put in and keeps the show on the road, but football decisions need to be immediate and until that problem is resolved we are always going to be playing catch-up with other clubs.
  9. He may be injured - I know some Under-23's are furloughed but not sure about Hilton.
  10. Under-18 goalkeeper. I think Fisher is ineligible because of various loans and Hilton may be on furlough or injured.
  11. Sorry you didn't enjoy the win and the promise of some our youngsters. Personally, I had a very enjoyable afternoon watching it so, yes I suppose I must be easily pleased when I see Rovers win - to be honest it's never been any different for almost sixty years of watching now. The performances of our youngsters was an added bonus.
  12. An entertaining end of season affair which saw plenty promise from the younger players. I thought young Carter did exceptionally well. JRC looks good going forward considering that he's not a left back. Buckley was very good when he came on both in movement and passing. Armstrong looks better with every game and I suspect we'll do well to keep him during the window. If we have to rely on the younger players, I think Mowbray will be pleased with what he has seen today and will feel he has something to work with next season. A sound goalkeeper, an experienced centre-back and a play-maker in midfield, if Downing goes, would be the additions I would be looking for. We also need to replace Graham up front - not convinced by either Brereton or Gallagher as reliable goalscorers. However, I enjoyed today, enjoyed seeing the young lads given an opportunity and seeing them take it.
  13. I believe a number of them still are. I would have loved to have seen Brad Lyons being given a chance but not to be.
  14. Is he still furloughed with a number of the Under-23 squad?
  15. I suspect, like me, you started supporting in an era when we were a top team with the likes of England, Pickering, Dougie etc thrilling us week after week. The crown jewels then had to be sold to keep the economic wolf from the door and the slide into Division Three seemed inevitable. I remember Jim Smith being distraught that he couldn't sign Geoff Hutt, a full-back who'd been on loan but a fee of £9,000 was simply too much to make the signing permanent. The key difference then, of course, was that the guardians of the purse strings - the likes of Bill Bancroft, David Brown and Bill Fox were Rovers men through and through. Although we, as supporters, gave them stick from time to time because of the lack of spending, we also knew that they were working miracles to keep the club afloat. Today, we have owners on the other side of the world who are totally remote from the club and have been unable to stem a decade of decline. Sadly, we are totally dependent on an ownership model where one or more individuals bankroll the club. Jack Walker tried to make it self sufficient - the academy was to play a large role in that - but it proved impossible at a time when we were in a far better position than now. With the present owners seemingly happy to continue bankrolling the club I think it's understandable why supporters are willing to take the cash to keep things going - even if reluctantly. We may not be Bury but there are any number of 'Big' name businesses at the moment that are going to the wall.
  16. Mowbray and his staff have two years left on their contracts. Any change of manager at this point will mean a huge outlay in paying up their contracts and then employing a new manager and backroom team. At a time when the pandemic is still going to restrict normal commercial activity within the game I suspect most clubs, Rovers included, will simply be happy to come through this period with the club intact. If the financial situation at the club is anywhere near as bad as it sounds then it points to players being sold and replacements being a combination of Under-23's, freebies and loans. In the circumstances, I'm not sure how a change of manager, at this point, would do anything but plunge the club into further financial turmoil. Of course, with owners as unpredictable as ours, anything is possible but I suspect that their priorities at the moment are all in India with their own business and maintaining the support their Charitable Foundation gives to the people in the Pune area. At the moment I suspect Ewood is way down on their list of priorities even though they seem to have no inclination to sell the club, indeed far from it looking at the money pumped in each year.
  17. You are right chaddy they are not irrelevant. I have no doubt that at least two of Armstrong, Travis, Nyambe and Lenihan will be allowed to move on to raise funds to allow us to bring in some freebies and a loan or two. Survival as a football club is going to be the main aim whilst we deal with the virus rather than funding a promotion bid. Sadly, I suspect there are going to be some real tough times ahead for us as a football club.
  18. Hasn't he been back in India for the past four months - he left before lockdown - and last I heard I think he's still there.
  19. An enjoyable game and a draw a fair result. The changes that Mowbray made certainly improved us in attack - although both Davenport and Holtby should have scored. Felt we finished strongly against a very good side. Pleased that there was finally an end product from Rothwell who looked quite dangerous running at people - if he could only do it on a consistent basis. Considering the injuries we've had this season to key players I'm more than happy to have reached 60 points with still three games to play.
  20. The logistics are going to be interesting. Existing season ticket holders would have to be ready to move seats as social distancing will mean at least one or two seats left empty between each supporter and presumably every other row would have to be left empty. Rovers have a large number of senior supporters so will be interesting to see how many take it up. I suspect many, like myself, may buy a season ticket but not appear in the ground until much later.
  21. A very enjoyable game to watch and a superb second half performance. I thought Johnson and Travis were outstanding in the centre. Johnson got stronger and better as the game went on. Samuel and Graham looked some much better than Gallagher and Brereton. Samuel actually gets into goalscoring positions despite fluffing opportunities in previous games, tonight's goal was a classic poacher's goal as was Graham's. Armstrong's was a brilliant piece of quick thinking and he executed it perfectly. I thought we defended well in the second half and looked well in control. Sadly, Walton still looks like an accident waiting to happen - goodness knows what he was doing for their first goal. However, tonight was a thoroughly enjoyable win after the gloom and doom of last week.
  22. Totally agree with this. There will have to be departures to balance the books and only Lenihan, Travis, Armstrong and possibly Nyambe are going to attract bids. One can easily see Fisher or Hilton being used as the back-up 'keeper whilst the likes of Wharton - unless he is sold - Magloire, Carter, Thompson, Vale, Butterworth become part of the senior squad in terms of filling the bench on matchdays or graduating to the starting eleven.
  23. Good news and pleased that Lyons and Paton have also signed on for another season.
  24. No, Rev, what I'm saying is that the cost of paying up two years of a contract for the manager and his staff is going to have to be taken into consideration. Personally, at the moment, I'm more than happy for him to stay for next season - which is likely to be another difficult one with the games between September and December likely to be behind closed doors and, who knows, the whole thing may end being behind closed doors. I suspect, like many clubs, the Rovers simply want to survive intact during the period of this pandemic.
