But...the BILLIONAIRE owners asked players to take a 12.5% pay cut to help to protect the future of the club & those employed by the club. Özil apparently refused to accept this because he wasn’t convinced as to the owners’ motives. Subsequently, once the majority of the players accept the cut; the BILLIONAIRE owners made 55 people redundant anyhow, despite the salary sacrifices of the players. In the meantime, Özil uses a large chunk of his salary to make his own charitable donations so as to ensure the money goes where he wants it to....as he doesn’t trust the owners. I guess I’m saying, I’m not so sure that Özil is entirely the bad guy here....

Why is Mesut Özil being singled out for opprobrium in this thread ?

& the billionaire US owners who asked the millionaire players to take a pay cut to protect jobs ? ?

Footballers use of tenses in reported speech...in a way that nobody in real life ever would.... ”Well, he’s got the ball on the byline and he’s cut inside and whipped in one to the near post and we’re in front but the penalty changes everything and the ref...he’s seen it as a push and I don’t know where he gets that from but at the end of the day thems the breaks you have to deal with....Clive...”

Clubs are their own worst enemies....at the first sniff of promotion, expect some creative loopholes to be used either to keep the best talent or to sign new players. And let’s be frank...if we did it to keep Dack & thereby get into the play offs, we are not going to clutch our pearls and express shock & horror are we ? The riches of the PL are too great, too tempting, too seductive to sustain compliant behaviour. This smacks of “something must be done....this is something....let’s do it...” IMHO.

Don’t see how this can effectively be enforced to be frank...

Absolutely...the mystery of their continuing to fund us with seemingly no real urgency perplexes me.

If that happened, the new owners would either have to cut costs by c.£17m p.a. or put c.£17m new money in each season for us to stand stock still. Add COVID income depletion into the mix and that £17m needs another £5m p.a. to make up for gate/hospitality revenue lost. Should the12 point deduction result in relegation then the new owners would need to find another c.£5m to make up for lost TV money. Also, unless & until FFP rules post-COVID are clarified, it’s unclear as to whether any additional investment to buy new players would be allowed. All in all...I’m not sure how you would sell that prospect to a potential new owner.
