Really expect Moran to become a big player for us this season. He'll be more of an Elliott than a Morton. Encouraging for Gilsenan as well, very confident penalty.

I don’t believe the whole ‘tax’ thing was a legitimate concern for the club - think it was the red tops who brought that into play for us. Possibly got wind of something happening over there and 1+1=3. One element of this, from the info that was passed a number of weeks ago, is that Venky’s were aware that this investigation/process would be happening since Jan/Feb of this year. Club revenue was protected in the subsequent months by things like EFL money, season tickets, etc. So it only became an operational issue to us around the time when the sponsorship deal was put into place.

Garrett was due to go out to cover the Moran in, but the loan deal fell through. We had to get one body out of the door before the window closed - and it ended up being Buckley. -

Buckley was the 'out' to the Moran 'in'. -
No thanks. Can't imagine it'd appeal much to him either, it's not like he's not already managed a (relative) minnow in the CL. He'll have much bigger clubs clamouring for him, when he does leave Rovers.

From what I understand, it won't be that bad. They are still putting (and intending to put) money into the club, though the emphasis has been the club having to help out in this interim period (eg retaining some of the funds raised by transfers). How it affects the longer-term and whether it's a potential 'out' for them, genuinely don't know and we'll have to see how it plays out...

v Middlesbrough (h) - 16/09/2023

I hate games like this - Boro have been awful in the first few games, whereas we've played pretty well (even if all results haven't gone our way). It's like when an opposition striker has gone on a 16-year run without a goal before playing us. You know exactly what's going to happen and you're unable to do anything to stop it. All I can hope of is Wahlsted starting in goal, JRC moving into midfield and some of the new forwards playing. -

Even players like Seamus Coleman at Everton and, more recently Evan Ferguson at Brighton. Picked up for nominal fees from Irish clubs - Ferguson in particular looks the real deal, reminds me of a young Shearer. The players are out there, for sure. Let's hope the new striker is one of them... -
Would love to be in the room, asking questions!

JDT won’t be leaving anytime soon. But when he does, he’ll be going to a much bigger club than Boro. -

No, I wouldn’t say that. Preston at home, Burnley away off top of my head. Performance was frustratingly good today, but nothing at the top end. The result is abysmal, but we created enough chances to beat these four times over. Once the new lads can come in, hopefully we’ll see a difference. -

The absolute single positive from this game is that it’ll be Pears last as first choice. -

Absolute disgrace. Plymouth are League 1 standard and they’ve still managed to beat us. Some nice play in sections, but means fuck all if you have nothing up front. -

That early miss from Hedges was incredible. Travis does a lot right, but then his actual technical ability lets him down when it matters. Wharton hasn’t been good today either. And as for the short corners… -
That was the gameplan though, as JDT confirmed after the match. We allowed them to have possession and chances, being confident that our backline could handle it - which they evidently could. Szmodics should score when 1-on-1 in the first half, Moran had a good chance to score in the second and we had a few other chances on the break also. Very good away performance and we'll play like this again many times this season, particularly away to the stronger teams. I think the result and performance deserves all of the credit it gets.

I can't honestly say I've seen them play, possibly ever. But they're Plymouth and have just been promoted, so I expect 3 points. I'll go 3-1 Rovers. -
Suspect we'd have been waiting on Brighton to decide whether he could leave or not. Prem loans often drop into this last week of the window for that very reason.

One complaint I do have from today (in addition to my platitudes from earlier) is our set pieces. Understand that we need to think outside the box (literally) when we're playing bigger teams than us, but today's were woeful. Not to mention the wasted journey upfield for our CBs. Need to do better.
-
Agreed. I’ve seen a few comments saying that our performance was poor (but the result was good), which I don’t agree with at all. In away games like that, you actively submit possession, soak up the pressure and try to take the chances you get. Textbook away performance and result for me.
-
Agreed Moran didn’t do much, but what he did he did well. Showed more in that cameo than Dolan has in several games so far this season. And agreed on Gally. Honestly think he could score 15 if he’s a regular this season. But we still need another body up there, obviously.

Fantastic result. Fancied to us to win 1-0, but had the scorer wrong. Credit to Pears, one top drawer save today and generally good. The goal was an incredible piece of skill. Thought Moran and Gally looked good when they came on. Hyam, Carter and Brittain also really good as well. Really pleased with that.
