Number 6 (and 5) traditionally are centre backs. 4 is holding midfield. Isnt Montgomery a natural central midfielder rather than a right back? -

Going to Spurs made him go from 5th choice to 6th or 7th. But he was close enough to our first team for us not to be able to consider loaning him out, even if he had been on a long deal. You can fall beneath the cracks then, often an unused sub or going back to the under 21s. At Spurs, he isnt needed in the first team so theyve been able to choose really well selected loan moves whereby he hasnt had to go below the Championship but hes also managed to playe every week. RevidgeBlue has a real unhealthy disdain towards Broughton but ultimately especially with the lack of protection offered to clubs regarding youngsters (something we have taken advantage of with Tyjon and others) he was fairly powerless. -

That LT piece does seem to just be an attempt to cobble together an update partly based on assumptions. The Montgomery bit is strange journalism. For a start, a number 6 is a centre back. Dont let the modern day jargon fool you. But they havent "ruled out" playing him in his natural position? I would be very surprised if the Badarji deal happens now. Surely there are alternatives on a list that are actually fit should that be a profile of player that we desperately want? Right wing is the obvious main weakness at the moment. A right footed centre back, again yes we need. A number 10 as to not over burden Tyjon would certainly be something I agree with and if its something we do, chaddy will be fuming. Striker has slipped off the list, concern is still not even about the fact that I dont think that Gueye is good enough, which I dont, but moreso when Ohashi tires/is injured, we dont have a like for like replacement that can slot into the side without a change of tactic. Hopefully we can get a winger in as a minimum before the NEC game next week. -

Youve done well to pin it on Broughton. The same man who brought us Tronstad and Hyam who you really dont rate. -

Transfermarkt values are just totally made up figures to be fair. Gueye and Pickering are worth £3m, Buckley £2.2m, Pears twice the value of Toth, McLoughlin worth 3x the fee he went for a few days ago etc. -

He has, but the only game time he has missed since moving on is for that 6 month period prior to going to Plymouth. He may well have been in line to fill in when those got injured. But a simple yes or no, do you genuinely think he would have played more than 50 Championship games in the last 2 seasons had he stayed, with another season of regular football to come? And even if you think that which seems revisionist, can you not acknowledge that he HAS developed lots since he moved by being exposed to lots of regular Championshiop football? He wouldnt have been any better off even if he had stayed because at best he would have only been doing what he has been doing anyway and playing Championship football. He clearly wasnt signed to have an immediate impact on the pitch. They signed a young lad who hadnt really played much Championship football. We have signed loads of players (like any club) for the future. Mafoumbi, Barrett, Doherty and many others. Are they all wastes of time too? You only think players signed for the first team have any point. They signed a young lad for cheap. They will hope one day he will make the first team. If not they know they can churn out a considerable profit on him. So its an undeniably good bit of business. -

So no acknowledgement of the fact that hes played so many games already having gone down the route he has, or the games he will play this season? Theres literally a Stoke fan in the Championship thread saying he was their best outfield player last season and that hes developed well and will go on to bigger things. Does that sound a player who has moved and had his development stunted? Also, assuming he never breaks through at Spurs and is sold on. In your head, signing a player and then selling him at a massive profit is "pointless." He may have broken through here, although Hyam, Carter and Wharton are all still here. Big assumption to suggest that he would have instantly become first choice. But either way, even if he had, he would just match the regular game time he has already achieved, so how would he have been MORE developed had he stayed? Your alternative choice of staying would just at best give him the same exposure at the same level that he has had. -

So his development has stalled and thus he made a terrible decision to leave here where he was behind other senior centre backs? -

You said it was "a possibility" but my post was about Nixon supppsedly saying that we still want him. I think thats an out of date suggestion and you can discount it. -

You dont address peoples points, you just repeat your own. Has he developed? Yes, he has played and this season will continue to play loads of football. Will it benefit Spurs? Yes, they will make a considerable profit on him so good investment. And would he have immediately and suddenly have gone here from 5th choice to 2nd? No. -

No way is Kapuadi a possibility. He is clearly out of date with that comment. We wanted a left footer to come in, wanted Kapuadi, couldnt afford him so got McLoughlin instead. I suspect any centre back who comes in now will be much cheaper and right footed as its only under consideration to cover Carter. -

Do you genuinely think he would have played 10-15 games more here than what he has moving? He has played consistently, week in week out for 1 and a half of 2 years so that would only be bettered if he instantly had gone from 5th choice here to playing regularly. And we still had Hyam and Carter who were our centre backs when we finished 7th with Wharton also here so there is no way that he would have been a regular here in that first half season in which he went to Spurs and didnt play for a bit. You also mention being more sought after potentially because we are higher in the league. In that first season, we nearly went down. In the second season, he would perhaps have been even less likely to play under Eustace. -

What an incredibly bitter post. He has developed! You would perhaps have a point had he been just playing kids football for 2 years but he hasnt. He has played and this season will continue to play loads of football. Phillips didnt even play 10 games under JDT. He has played 53 Championship games in the last 2 seasons and will play regularly again this season. If anything, far more than he would have played here where he was 5th choice and still had Hyam, Carter and Wharton ahead of him. So can you please tell me how the move was bad for his development. Also, the idea that it will be pointless for Spurs even if they do sell him, considering a considerable profit will be turned over, again is ridiculous. -

Your fans seem to be pretty much in unison in what I have seen in being delighted to see him return. Our fans seem to be in unison that he made a terrible move leaving. But seems to me that hes really developing and proving himself at Stoke. -

What makes you think he would have been a regular here? How long would he have waited? He left as 5th choice here, Ayala left, Hyam and Carter had just had a good season here finishing 7th and we also had Wharton ahead of him. So how do you work out that he would have been a regular? JDT wasnt using him very often, and understandably so. What has actually happened, is not that hes rotted in academy football. He has actually played far more football via loan spells rather than had he stayed here where at least short term he was back up. He has played and this season will continue to play regular Championship football and his reputation will continue to grow. Other players may have gone to League 2 or whatever. Phillips wont. Why would he. He already has proven for 18 solid months and likely a further 12 months upcoming that he is a very capable young defender. Even if he doesnt make it at Spurs, a top Championship or lower Prem club will take him, no danger. And how is it pointless for Spurs? As I said, even if he never makes their first team, theyll turn over a big profit. Good investment, no? So benefit to Phillips? More money obviously, but also loads of Championship regular football, moreso than here. Benefit to Spurs? Pick up a talented player for cheap and at worst turn over a big profit. So tell me, how have either made a mistake? How would Phillips have been in a better position even if he had played regularly and stayed? -

Would the only way that people have thought that his move was correct if he had gone from our bench/under 21s straight into a Premier League starting 11? He was 5th choice here when he left. When Ayala left, he would have still been 4th choice. He has instead gone on very well selected loan moves. The first one at Plymouth was probably one of only one or two teams at this level that would have regularly started him. Then onto Stoke who are a step up from Plymouth but again were willing to start him week in week out. How would he have been better off had he stayed? -

Wharton is an absolute freak. He has progressed so rapidly because he is a special talent. Phillips is also a talent but not at that level. Poor decision by Spurs? They at the very least will make a considerable profit on the peanuts they paid? Poor decision by his agent? He would have been well paid for the move and likely again when he moves on, having seen his client really establish himself as a Championship defender so long. And even with us, it is much harder to protect yourselves with young players. Id be amazed if Tyjon is still here next season. -

Like he was here when he left. He will probably be sold next summer. And assuming he continues to impress, as still a very young centre back with lots of games under his belt and having impressed at Championship level, he will have his fair share of options. -

He has been given the platform to play regular Championship football, where he has really impressed at a young age. He wasnt even playing here. Why did they buy him? Big clubs often hoover up young players who have potential. Spurs werent signing a 17 year old 5th choice Championship defender to come straight in. They will have known that there was a strong chance that at the very least, they could sell him on in the future for considerable profit. They very well might next summer. -

But he was behind Hyam and Carter here. And presumably would have continued to be. My main question is though. Even if he had stayed here and played a similar number of games in the same division, which I doubt but I will run with it. How would he have been in a better position in terms of reputation? I would get the argument had he gone to Spurs and stayed there in the under 21s but not based on the route he has taken. And I dont get why you are fixating on that first half season. He played was it 9 games the season prior for us. Another 6 months not playing at such a young age will not have hindered his development, even if you discount training with better players and coaches. -

You say ready to break into the first team here but it seems a stretch to assume considering how little he played and how far down the pecking order he was. Either way, across these 3 seasons, assuming he is a regular at Stoke again which seems a safe bet. The chances are slim that he would have ended that period with more Championship appearances. So I don't see how he would have been a more attractive proposition or how his career would have been in a better place had he stayed. You say his stock would have risen, but bis stock has risen. Had he been a regular for 3 seasons here, which as I said seems incredibly unlikely but you disagree. Why would his stock have risen any more. Either way, he proves that he is a capable Championship defender. I also very much doubt that he went to Spurs expecting to barge straight in. -

But he hasnt had to compete with those players, bar half a season in which he would have had the experience of training against the likes of Kane with top coaches. At best, he would have played as much football here as he has done anyway and will do this season. And thats assuming that he would have suddenly gone from 4th/5th choice here to 1st or 2nd. And had he stayed here. Why would that have left him in a better position next summer compared to the position he will be in already? Spurs has been a good move because rather than keeping him around, theyve been able to choose really good moves for him to play regularly. He will go into next summer with 100+ Championship games under his belt, having really improved his reputation. -

I dont get why the inexperience of the owners is relevant. The important thing is that the squad has lots of it, surely? All they do is keep signing cheques. I must say that I am also not convinced by Parkinson now they are no longer a stand out side at the level. Their squad in the lower leagues was full of players on their last legs that were still far too good but they do have a fair few now that are far from over the hill. Windass, Hardie, potentially O'Brien, Rathbone, Brunt, Longman etc.
