Kevin Nolan commenting on his latest contract deal then moves onto commenting on nurses pay..........

....... "Talking of deals, I'm really happy to be part of the Mayday for Nurses campaign. This has been organised by Noreena Hertz - and the plan is that Premiership players donate a day's pay for a nurse's hardship fund.

Nursing is a really well-respected profession and I hope as many players as possible agree to the scheme. My fiancee is a nurse and I think their pay is a scandal. It is with absolutely no sense of pride whatsoever that I can tell you that there have been times when Hayley has gone to work hours before I have left for training. I have then returned from my working day and made a cup of tea before Hayley has arrived back from her shift. Without nurses the hospital system would collapse and the National Health Service would be in chaos."

The man like so many from his pampered profession appear to have lost touch with reallity completely!

Love to know why he's lost touch with reality? For me, he states a genuine case. Okay, he's a footballer and probably his wife needn't work at all, but the fact she does, and in the nursing trade makes her okay in my eyes. My wife retired not long ago; she looked after mentally ill patients, mainly men, and had to attend restraint and control courses every so often in order to keep her certificates up and stay in the job. The National Health, who run these courses, made the nurses pay for the day out of their own pockets. The hours are long, the pay rubbish and the people who work there are dedicated.

Blackburn has a sizeable hospital. Are you telling me that no Rovers fans wives or girfriends, sisters etc, work there and don't feel the same? What you think of Nolan as a footballer matters not. On this subject, power to his elbow as far as I'm concerned.

TD swap the "i" in winky for an "a" and you will understand the meaning of the punchline.

Once a wi(a)nker ALWAYS a wi(a)nker :wstu::brfc:

What, they use their elbows in Blackburn, wow, that is novel. You should get in touch with the Guinness Book of Records for that.

Right well thats that then. Lets pay all nurses £25000 per week and only require em to work from 10.30am to 1.30 pm apart from Saturdays when they will be asked to just do 90 mins. There happy now tango dancer?

btw This life is not a rehearsal. We only pass this way once so what a shame your missus has spent her entire working life in a job and a position which she regretted so much and felt so bitter about. There are many many worse and poorly rewarded jobs than nursing but she really should have taken another career option when she left school.

I sincerely hope that in the future when you require nursing care:>>>

My fellow professional decides to wash your balls with carbolic acid when it's time for your bedbath.

I really don't think that's the point Nolan is trying to make. As for the rest of your post are you just trying to be controversial for the sake of it?

If you disagree then fine, but please be kind enough to offer some kind of reasoning to back up your point.

How about you offer some kind of reasoning to back up yours? Forgetting Nolan plays for Bolton and that I'm a Bolton supporter, where's the logic in ######-kicking a perfectly genuine appeal? Nursing is an honourable profession, as millions will attest to. It is also a thankless, lowly paid occupation; a fact which I sincerely hope you never have to find out for yourself. Who asked for nurses to be on footballers wages? Certainly not me, or Kevin Nolan.

When you talk about reasoning, forget the colour of the football shirt and stick to the topic. That's what your "reasoning seems motivated by.

Alrighty matey. According to this

The average nurses salary is £21000pa. Hardly in the low paid bracket are they? All that crap that they are is simply hogwash.

Appologies to the board for this non-football topic, but this guy is talking utter xxxxxxxx.

Back to thenodrog:

This figure, of course, includes all ranks of nurses. The average salary of any worker across the country takes in all the highly paid executives, mixes it with shop-floor workers and comes up with an "average" that is way above what most ordinary workers actually get. At the time my wife retired she was on £6.25 per hour as a lower level bank-staff nurse who had to fight to get enough hours/shifts in to make any sort of a decent wage after tax, and not one of the highly qualified sisters and Matrons whose wages also go into these wonderful "averages" of yours.

I am not quite sure what your agenda is here as most people seem only too happy to support not only Nolan's suggestion but that of most professional footballers right now. No doubt Blackburn footballers will join this also. Would you have been quite so antagonistic if the suggestion had come from a Blackburn player? I tend somehow to think not. If my presence here bothers you, that can soon be changed. I'll bid you adieu. I'll even wish you luck for the rest of the season. Just don't let football bias get in the way of common sense, especially on issues that might one day affect a member of your own family.

Four members of my family are nurses. Whilst they are certainly not rolling in it they are far from being 'without' if you know what I mean.

Personally I really get ticked off by all this constant harping on and comparing nurses wages to other careers as a FIRST option. Just one of those tired old first choice but lazy journalistic comments that is designed to be emotive. It's happened for at least the last 40 years and belongs in the 'our overcrowded gaols' and our 'overworked police force' category. Tell you what this 'poor nurse' fallacy has been around so long that if it were indeed true then anybody who chose nursing as a career knowing that they would be doomed to being the lowest paid workers in the history of the world deserves all they get.

There are plenty of overworked and underpaid people out there just as there will no doubt be the opposite, but nurses pay is just an example of the theory that if you say something often enough people will believe it. I'll bet they earn more than office workers / agricultural workers / workers in the retail sector / many small businesses etc etc with the main difference being that the nurses are not paying their wages are they?

All this emotive crap spouted about how great they are is appalling..... sure there are very many good nursing staff I'm sure BUT if they are now so highly trained and akin to modern day angels than their predecessors as many people would have us believe then how come MRSA caused solely by operating and nursing patients in dirty and unhygeinic conditions is so 'popular'?

I think a lot of people are fighting to get nurses higher wages because they are in a position were they can have someone's life, quite literally, in their hands. Generally working long hours, without breaks etc. So yes I think they should earn more than office workers etc.

The comment about MRSA...well if you speak to any nurse they will tell you that you already carry it, and that it is found in hospitals because they check for it. It can be brought in by visitors, by the patient being a bit too curious and lifting up that bandage to look at their scars that they were told not to. I'm not saying dirty hospitals have no part to play, but I do think media is responsible for a bit of scare mongering here.

Nurses that work in day units can be on a very low wage, even if they do something a bit more specialised, such as administering chemotherapy. It's generally the bonuses for working unsociable hour's etc that bump up the wages.

Therefore, I support the idea. There are however, so many different situations, wards, wage bands, etc to just make a general statement such as 'nurses should be paid more'.

Nurses are the second most over rated bunch of whinging to$$ers in the country. Only doctors get on my nerves more than they do.

It is a low paid job because it is low skilled. End of. They are not modern day angels, they are mostly miserable, surly, unhelpful barely literate Sharons who struggle to give you the time of day, let alone valuable information and care.

No doubt there are people on here that have had excellent experiences of Nurses, but I have had nothing but utter incompetence from the lot of them. Bolton, Preston, Darlington, Sharoe Green (Whom I have sued successfully twice) and Macclesfield. In any other profession, they would be struck off / disbarred / sacked for the gross dereliction of duty. Yet they get away with murder because "medicine is not an exact science" - OH YES IT IS!

Some nurse was moaning on Radio 4 on Sunday about the scheme that allows nurses and other "key workers" to buy joint stakes in houses with the local authority, with them paying a reduced rent to the council for the bit that they don't own themselves. Apparently, her rent had gone up 5%, but her salary had only gone up 1.9%. Jesus, my heart bled for her. What gives them the right to get state subsidy to but a house in the first place? If you can't afford to buy a house in Hale, then buy one in Wythenshaw. Don't come moaning about it to the state and expect a bloody hand out.

Nurses are no more essential than the people that make sure your electric is working, sewage workers or truck drivers. We are all screwed without them, but they seem to believe that they have the moral high ground because they are in a "caring" profession. Well tell that to all the people that given false, misleading and down right inaccurate information from these cretins on a daily basis.
