Head Rover Heels Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Have Man City agreed to the transfer fee yet? Just wondered what that meant. I was wondering whether it was all getting tied up in a "media delay", or whether my suspicions were correct. Quite odd that our club releases a statement as telling as that one, and permission still hasn't been announced by City. (Is odd the wrong word? Would "Predictable to those in the know" be more accurate?)

Dunnfc Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Nicko - For compensation what are we talking about the buy out of 12 months contract or Rovers demands for him? Is it true he told the board to let him talk and accept a bid because he always bangs on about how lucky he is at Rovers and how he loves John Williams. This to me is a hugh slap in the face for the board and if Man City appoint someone else and Chelsea do i don't see a way back for Hughes at Rovers. I think hes gone one way or another. What sort of message does it send out to your players though, the manager touts himself around...... Bentley will think its perfectly acceptable now. For me Hughes is bang out of order and ought to be put on "Gardening leave".
ace Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 On topic please iamarover. Thought this was Nicko's thread and anything could be put on here!! Anyway I think iamarover's post is pertinent to judging the calibre of a man choosing between a job with a Human Rights abuser from Thailand or an Oligarrch from Russia.
Oklahoma Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Well, I have accepted that Hughes will leave. Can he please take Bentley as well for 20million £? And Mokoena, Reid, Jason Roberts if he wants too...

modes98 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 OK, own up, who's backing Sparky for Chelsea in the past few minutes...? I put some on earlier at 10/1 but it seems that bookies don't think he is getting the job, they are all drifting out to 10/1 Quite odd that our club releases a statement as telling as that one, and permission still hasn't been announced by City. Man City did put it up on their site, but they just copied rovers press release.
philipl Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 It's six hours since the bomb dropped...but anyone noticed something very significant? Have Man City agreed to the transfer fee yet? Just wondered what that meant. That Rovers know they are far better off with Hughes going to Chelsea than to City (not least from being able to go to a Billic and say three years from now if you do a good job for us....) and so have joined in the game by: 1) hitting Citeh's soft financial underbelly if as suspected they have one, and 2) putting Chelski on the spot to put up or shut up. Of course, it probably means 3) an announcement of a press conference at Eastlands is a matter of minutes away.

Anyway I think iamarover's post is pertinent to judging the calibre of a man choosing between a job with a Human Rights abuser from Thailand or an Oligarrch from Russia. It's probably a post that most people agree with but this is not a political debate area, this is the football bit of the boards. If you wish to discuss the ins and outs of human rights then go to i can't believe it's not football.
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Man City believe they can talk to Sparky WITHOUT agreeing a compensation package first. As I understand it Rovers want that figure in writing and guaranteed beforehand. Man City's bid is being handled by a rookie new executive chairman and some very strange sidekicks like Kia Joorabchian. Rovers have John Williams handling negotiations. I suspect Rovers will win that particular battle hands down. As I understand it there is NO fixed fee in the manager's contract, so they will have to agree one...and paying on the drip isn't going to wash. There are a few twists in this tale yet.
Ray-Von Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 OK, own up, who's backing Sparky for Chelsea in the past few minutes...? I invested a fiver this morning at 22/1 - couldn't resist given your earlier confidence!
EwoodGlory Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Betfair seems to have calmed down now, went from 16 to 10 in a short space of time, seems to be steady at 12 now.
broadsword Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Shouldn't that have been agreed before it went public? Someone could end up with egg on their face, giant omelette style. If Hughes was hoping to force Chelsea's hand, he may not be successful if it's going to take days before talks can go ahead. And perhaps Chelsea can read between the lines and know that as well.
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 out of interest for the betting market. hughes is obivously clear favourite for the man city job. but who would be the outsider for man city? there are some very good prices at the moment. alot of money to be made (or probably lost). Leave alone. There's only one show in town there just now.
Sandiway Blue Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Betfair seems to have calmed down now, went from 16 to 10 in a short space of time, seems to be steady at 12 now. That might have been my fault!

bringdunnback Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Does it have to be negotiated before Hughes can speak to City.

Rovers have John Williams handling negotiations. Certainly all adds up doesn't it. Why we continue to doubt Williams i've no idea - We always end up doing well when it comes to negotiations. (I'm going to pretend that i didn't see point 3, and am also going to avoid looking at any news sights to prolongue this feeling of slight relief)
iamarover Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 On topic please iamarover. And what topic is that exactly, mister patronising moderator? ' Nicko's thread' seems to roam from crazy conversations about Betfair to Owen Coyle's dog. Oh, I see. You mean this is football chat so we can't discuss anything as horrible as the real world? That's what Tory politicians used to say about the boycott of sport with apartheid South Africa. Sorry - 'on topic' is precisely that. Just because it makes any decent person wince to think of a football manager who blithely talks about 'justice' and 'fairness' in his job on Match of the bluddy Day, yet is prepared to trounce all those values in return for 30 pieces of blood stained silver doesnt mean you should try and ban people who point out the appalling implicaions of that behaviour. If he takes he is a man devoid of principle or morality. Whatever the topic.
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 That might have been my fault! Confession is good for the soul...
nicko Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Nicko's thread' seems to roam from crazy conversations about Betfair to Owen Coyle's dog. Coyley doesn't have a dog... And don't insert any dodgy jokes here either.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 What happens if Crazy Thaksin says i want Ronaldinho, or Jo and Hughes says i dont want them. I just can't see Hughes being told who to sign, and would be pretty vocal about it.
Tom 1 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 With a new manager what does it mean for Dunne at City. Still leaving? Pompey or Spurs.
Sandiway Blue Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Confession is good for the soul... When do you think we will reach a conclusion with regards to Chelsea? (to be honest i am not too worried about Citeh at the moment)

This made me smile. Albeit a small, wry one, a smile on a crappy day nonetheless. John 'Ironballs' Williams was the image that came to mind. I've been feeling ill all day about this, mostly due to the fact that clubs in a similar financial situation to us (eg. Bolton, Wigan - poor as housemice in Premier League income terms) have only been able to aim for the 'dizzying heights' of managers like Gary Megson after discovering that assistant managers are incompetent. If we're going to get a fat sum of money out of those thieving mancs, regardless of what happens, I'm feeling better already.
den Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Man City believe they can talk to Sparky WITHOUT agreeing a compensation package first. This could be interesting. Of course City have no legal right to talk to Hughes at all - he's under contract. So, if City and Rovers don't budge, then Hughes would have to walk out. But does he really want to go to City? Is he sure enough about the deal on offer? If he does walk out, then there's absolutely no way back.
