I'm ok with 5-7 spots in the 25 man squad being reserved for Academy graduates, yes.

Your suggestion is how I would run it too - a number of graduates rotated through the bench and given minutes off the bench to see what they're made of when the result is no longer in doubt.

As I said the problem we'll run into is that the 15-18 core players would have to be really good and we're simply not going to fund that. You can't have the likes of Forshaw. JRC (as much as it pains me to say it) or Buckley around the squad either, they're passengers.

Some spots being reserved for them in the overall squad I don't necessarily have a problem with. As long as they're mostly at a point we can be confident they'll contribute reasonably if called on. But that's different to setting a target of a number of minutes. If you have a strong 15-18 core like you say, they're unlikely to rack up 3,000 minutes between them on merit, using the system we both agreed on.

Interview with David Dunn about his lad

https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/25166374.david-dunn-son-isaacs-great-season-blackburn-rovers/

David Dunn says his son Isaac has had a “great season” in Rovers’ Academy but insists he the youngster must stay grounded through the “ups and downs” of football.

“He is a very technical player but, again, he’s still got loads of growth yet. I am looking forward to watching him progress and see where it takes him because we all know that football is a really tough sport.

Isaac made his debut for the Under-21 side earlier this season at just 16 years of age and has since been named on the bench for the first team on a handful of occasions.

“He is still only 16, he’s a young boy. But for a first-year scholar going into full-time football, I’d say he has had a great season,” his dad told The Football Faithful.

“There are going to be ups and downs, that is for sure. It is just about how he manages the negatives and hopefully he can have much more positives.”

David is happy to leave the football side to Isaac’s coaches at Rovers but is keen to pass on his experience off the pitch.

“I just think it’s important for me to mentor him off the pitch. Hopefully, I can show him what I did wrong,” he joked.

“You have to be so dedicated now in football and live your life like an elite athlete should. Football will take care of itself.

“You have got to trust the managers and the coaches that they will look after him. You just have to support him and give good advice off the pitch.”

Dunn previously coached in Rovers’ Academy and was assistant manager of the Under-21 side at one stage, helping win the Premier League 2 Division Two title. He also had a spell working under Tony Mowbray with the first team squad.

“The best job I have ever had on this side of the fence was coaching at Blackburn U21s. It was a brilliant role," he reflected.

“I got so much enjoyment out of it. It is my club where I’ve been brought through, and watching players develop and take a similar path was extremely rewarding.”

The Academy success has continued this season, with several youngsters making their senior debuts.

Elsewhere, Adam Wharton could be involved in the FA Cup final this weekend they Crystal Palace take on Manchester City at Wembley.

“I like it when local players are given the opportunity when they come through the ranks,” Dunn added.

“I believe Blackburn have 700 consecutive appearances for having a graduate in the side and I think I was the first of those games. You see lads that have been at the club since eight or nine in the first team, which is brilliant.

“One great thing about the club is that they have always produced players, so hopefully that can continue for many years to come.”

May have played a part, apparently been in the academy for 10+ years too

Not sure we can say Phillips hasn't got far, probably getting paid more than anyone currently at Rovers, and has played pretty much 1.5 out of 2 years at Championship level since he left

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/stoke-city-hopes-of-tottenham-ashley-phillips-transfer-agreement-played-down/

I would hazard a bet that like Phillips, Finneran will also be playing at a decent level next season, and also is on a wage much higher than he would be getting at Rovers

Phillips has done okay, but I would argue had he stayed he would be further ahead in his development and may have got a more successful Prem move in the vein of Wharton, rather than loans to other mid-table Championship sides.

It's too easy to get lost in the shuffle among all the players at bigger clubs by moving too early. Finneran will be up against all to lads in the Newcastle academy which has been producing a fair number of good midfielders recently, and there is no path to the first team with their current squad.

re Phillips - quite possibly, and I would probably agree with you there, but I am sure he is happy enough.

re Finneran - again I am sure he is happy enough, 17 years old, is now a regular in their U21s, (started every game since February) and whilst obviously just my prediction, I feel he will get first team minutes somewhere at a decent level next season

How much compensation did we end up getting for Finneran?

Never been announced, possibly never will be, as it will be based mainly on appearances, etc, and a sell on, it will be drip fed over years anyway

Cheers. Typical Suhail.

He can't have been that much of a fan of Telalovic as he hardly ever started him .

Clearly JDT wanted better

granted he did but he knew the project had changed

I watched Duru in that game at Rochdale. From what I saw he’s nowhere near ready for a first team spot. The game just  passed him by.

game at Rochdale?

The academy’s aim should be to produce first team players.

and that is what this academy has been doing for years.

So we don't know that JDT signed off on Telalovic over La Liga man. And we certainly don't know (the main point) that JDT was happy with either.

JDT was always very clever he had the final say on transfers. GB also backed it up. If you disagree fine, not interested at all.

What is this even supposed to mean?

Of course he knew it had changed; he offered his resignation.

I'd really appreciate an answer to this - what relevance to Telalovic being dogshit does JDT knowing his budget was slashed have?

Yeah, Rochdale V Rovers earlier last season. We got battered.

watched him against Blackpool in the league up and he was good, shown his pace and ability to cope with physical demands.

In the Rochdale game he did nothing. He should have been a level above everybody else on the pitch. As it was he looked really ordinary. He didn’t look interested to be honest. Plus - he’s not very big. I know Alan Wright wasn’t very big either but he turned out to be top class, however players like him don’t come along very often.

Against Blackpool he showed good attributes but also looked very raw.

He was quick and powerful driving forward but when he got into dangerous positions he really struggled with knowing what to do next. Defensively he had little to do.

Probably could do with another loan just to show he is capable of playing regular football after suffering injuries on his loan this season.

I'm not going OTT over that.

Did anyone suggesting Wharton 6 months before JDT came in. Not to my knowledge

You expect them to finish article don't you?

You got to let them develop and learn their trade whilst having off days. All part of developing players

Wharton was a once in a generation level talent. Duru isn’t as good as Nyambe was when he first broke into the team. He needs another loan, he’s not a championship level player at the moment.

He seems quite reminiscent of Nyambe from what I've seen so far.

Was it even decided? They really drag their feet with these tribunal things and aren't the outcome details usually public? Or did we agree a fee with them instead?

How do you know JDT had the final say, other than some other failures at Ewood told you this in an interview when they were probably trying to save their own neck.

If you can find a quote from JDT I’ll admit I gladly admit I was wrong. Something you haven’t done on the 3000 minutes target quote from Rudy.

No I dont think he should be the finished article. Because I dont think that we should be setting targets for academy graduates minutes or that every single graduate that has played has been ready to do so, you are twisting it that I dont want any academy players to ever play or that I expect perfection.

In this instance, and factoring in the admittedly limited amount that I have seen him. I saw some potential but also a very raw player that I feel would be best suited to getting some regular game time in League 1 or 2, proving that his body can sustain league football, rather than the occasional cameo here.

Obsessing again over This minutes stuff

I have been quite clear that I would promote 3 young players to the squad and who they were but also have 5 or 6 promising players around the 25 man squad. Michalski isn't included in my 3 as he was 3rd choice this past season
