  1. I used to work with a bloke who had a big welding rod hammered into the wall above his work bench. Over it was written “ Mistakes I Have Made “. It had about 300 to 400 betting slips impaled on it. I can sort you out with a similar welding rod if you like.
  2. What do they know ? Playing temporarily at centre half will help his development immensely. You get a real understanding of what it takes to play there. That can only help his game as central midfield player.
  3. David Helliwell was going to be the new Bryan Douglas. I saw him make his debut in place of Dougie in midfield. He was really impressive that day but he was very slight and never filled out. He drifted around the lower leagues. Maurice Whittle had a good career with Oldham. Roberts was an Aussie goalkeeper.
  4. That’s a brilliant result given the side we had to put out. Well done boys.
  5. That’s only because they made your glass too big.
  6. I wouldn’t have taken the job in those circumstances. It’s a ridiculous state of affairs. How it should work is the manager says to the DOF “ I’m looking for a left winger, see who you can find “ . The DOF comes back with a short list of likely options and the manager decides if he’s interested in any of them or not.
  7. Mick was a very under rated player. He wasn’t flashy but he was always a steady performer. Never 9/10 but never 5/10 either. A terrier like tackler and he always found a blue and white shirt with the ball. We could do with signing one like him now.
  8. Yeah he started out there before he went to York and then Bournemouth. I’m sure I saw him playing for both those teams at Spotland. He was partnered with Phil Boyer at York I think. When he was at Bournemouth he had Harry Redknapp on the right wing and another good winger on the left. Alf Arrowsmith was going to be a top player but he got a bad knee injury.
  9. Ted McDougall playing for Liverpool along with Ronnie Moran and Gerry Byrne. Some good players in those teams.
  10. I’ve had to do that a few times back in the day. It was usually a booking, never a red card then. I accept things have changed a lot since the 1960’s and 70’s.
  11. I’d have marked his card and bided my time until the away game.
  12. We were totally toothless up front then. We might have stayed up if we hadn’t have sold Ken Knighton to Hull before the run in.
  13. Yeah Kerr was a real player. Another David Dunn. We were all set to sign Alec Lindsay but Liverpool pipped us at the last minute. I watched Bury a lot then, a mate was in and out of their team at the time, and Lindsay was the sort of player you could build a team around. The new Bobby Moore. He was really a centre back but Liverpool insisted he played at left back.
  14. And Billy Wilson at left back. He didn’t stand any nonsense either.
  15. Yes he came as a make weight in the Hunter deal. Valued at £20k - 2 games later he was gone to Palace for £55k. Played 30 games for Palace and then drifted out of the game. Hunter was a class act. We’re jumping up and down about Van Hecke but Hunter was twice the player. Ken Knighton came at the same time. Now he was a warrior.
  16. Sounds like him. Furphy must have seen the light because after Bell joined Palace for big bucks he hardly played for them !
  17. Ken Furphy signed players like there was no tomorrow back when we needed a new team in the early 1970’s. Didn’t he sign Bobby Bell for £20k and sell him 3 weeks later for £55k ?
  18. It’s like Buckley went on his holidays in summer and never came back. Either that or his twin came in his place.
  19. The guy was saying he’s a “ warrior “ - he isn’t. He’s a grafter. That’s not the same thing.
  20. Nah, Travis is a chocolate soldier. He’s a real warrior like Savage was a real warrior. Both are wind up merchants, once they’ve been booked you might as well sub them. Moran, Batty, Speedie, Nelsen, Andy Todd, Hendry, Keeley - they were real warriors.
  21. There’ll be a lot of players watching that and thinking “ He’s a snapper, let’s get to work “. Probably a straight red card for the Blackpool player but the Burnley lad lost his shit completely. Totally pointless sending off. Just roll over a few times like everybody else.
