I remember going to Rovers v Charlton back in the 1960’s. It was a day just like this. The river at the back of the Riverside was a raging torrent. They kicked off at 3-00 but it wasn’t long before pools of standing water started to appear and passing the ball became a lottery. There was a really funny moment. Rovers were attacking the Darwen End and Mike Ferguson put in a great cross around the penalty spot. Alan Gilliver was playing up front and as he took an almighty swipe at the ball, a gust of wind came up a blew the ball away like a toy yacht. He missed the ball completely, did a pirouette, and fell into a large puddle. Everybody was laughing, even the ref. Anyway Charlton scored just before half time to make it 0-1 but the ref called it off at half time. I used to have the programme.
