Barnsley v Rovers, Wed 17th Feb
Stuart replied to JPTSwindon's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Interesting point Rev. If your job was to protect Mowbray and that question came through from India, what would the excuse be? He has been backed in every transfer window and, unlike his predecessors, has never been forced to sell anyone. This is his team. Ironically, the only players from the previous era are Bennett, who Mowbray has made captain, and ex loanee Gallagher, who Mowbray signed. This surely is the reason Nyambe is being demonised. With him never looking like signing a new contract, and being picked and dropped for a long time (so as to accommodate Bennett), he makes a very useful scapegoat. -

If only it were. All eyes on Mowbray now. Man of integrity? We shall see. Sadly, a win at the weekend and the 28 game counter will be reset. -

Tell you what, Mowbray is very lucky there are no fans there tonight. He’d have had an earful. Everyone around him will be telling him what he wants to hear. He has built that kind of set up. Cross me or appear unhappy and you’ll follow others out of the door. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Nyambe has given Tony an ultimatum after being hooked and replaced by a striker in the last game. His man-management has and continues to be his poorest quality. If your name is Armstrong you will get a free pass. He has stuck by him for years during dry spells and that consistency and faith has resulted in goals. How hard is it to keep some consistency in other key areas? Our problem right now is that the guy in charge has very few ideas to begin with and now he has been found out by other managers he has no answer. He has lost it and is dragging Rovers down with him. -
He’ll simply block anyone who does but knock yourselves out.

It’s at least six abject performances in a row. Let’s have it right. -

I don’t even care that Armstrong has just added to his stats. Clear off Mowbray. -
Go Tony. Go now. Don’t sleep on it. Don’t even wait for the final whistle. Utterly contemptible to Rovers to carry on like this.

Is there a more pointless wall than Dack and Armstrong? -

Not that there have been any but I can’t believe that iFollow haven’t sorted out the silent half time highlights yet. Just waiting for Neil to start talking and then Snoop Dog interrupt to tell us to Just Eat! Tin Pot Amateurs! -

This pitch is shocking. Surely ours can’t have been worse than this when we had the postponement. -

I’m just trying to think which players are better now than they were before they started playing for Mowbray. I can only really think of Armstrong and Raya. -

Mowbray already lining up Nyambe as the scapegoat. It will soften the blow when he leaves for nothing. I absolutely despair of that man. He seems to become more and more belligerent with every game. Just as Bowyer did. Trouble is that we really need to get results. But while it’s on such an inconsistent basis we are building to nothing. Still what can we expect. There’s only so much you can do in 28 games. -
What absolute bullshit. Our last four performances have been abysmal. If he thinks that 45 minutes against PNE is just a blip then he is either a fool, in denial, or trying to send a message t’ th’owners. He must surely be under pressure from somebody at the club because the fans aren’t even there to show their disapproval. There would have been comprehensive booing at full time on Friday and he got away with one there. We need a win tomorrow to keep up appearances and we need a big performance to show that there is still a heartbeat under those blue and white shirts.

You have to V with the Venky you’ve got. If Venkys are a given and won’t sell then we are stuck with them. Everything is relative to that premise. If Mowbray isn’t doing the necessary on the pitch he has to be replaced. The necessary is promotion, and as a minimum the play-offs. This season. If every decision about the manager circles around to Venkys then we may as well pack in (or at least pack in messageboards) until they are gone. Because nothing matters. Not results, not performances, not pride in a local derby. We can’t even expect to watch eleven players busting a gut to win a game of football - because the manager isn’t accountable for any of that normal football stuff. We either continue to demand better or find something else to do. We are watching the slow death of a football club and the only people benefitting are the ones with the power to do something about it. Twist. Now. While we are still in with a shout.

It’s an interesting contradiction really isn’t it. Good Venkys: On the one hand they have set up an environment (a bubble) where Mowbray appears to be under little pressure to get results and has complete autonomy over the team and recruitment. With Venkys picking up the losses every year. Bad Venkys: On the other hand we are led to believe that we have to stick with Mowbray because the job would only attract chancers and Venkys will make the worst choice. It’s one or the other not both. If Mowbray was to walk tomorrow, would Waggott (or Suhail) really bring in another Kean or Coyle? If so, nothing has changed and Mowbray’s Stability Rovers is a fallacy.

Can’t you see how negative and defeatist this is? It also blows out of the water any suggestion that Venkys are good for Rovers. ‘Brand TM’ is unwatchable, unsuccessful rubbish. As others have said, his longevity has come about because of the destruction of any expectation and ambition. He lives off his decade-old West Brom success with the twice-a-season pundits and his L1 promotion (having failed his first task) with the fans. If he had kept us up that season, he would have already gone by now such has been his legacy since. He talks about the play-offs but then doesn’t do anything cohesively to achieve them. His approach is becoming ever more erratic and he doesn’t even instil pride in local derby games. I watched some of they Andy Cole career highlight on Sly while waiting for the game last night. In the two minutes they showed of his time at Ewood, he talked about how he had fallen out with Souness on day 1 as he “didn’t like being told what to do”. He wanted more respect given his age, ability and experience you he did his own thing. You wonder how many Rovers players are doing the same with Mowbray? Yes, it’s easy to blame the players but the manager first has to have the players’ respect. The buck stops with the guy in the dugout whose job it is to her the best out of his squad. If that’s Venus then replace Venus but ultimately it’s Mowbray’s watch. As a footnote, I think Mowbray has had a poor loan market this season. With the exception of an under-the-spotlight Harvey Elliott (now halting Dolan’s development for 12 months), the rest are error-prone and/or learning their trade. A January window with the play-offs in reach should be about getting the necessary players to take you over the line, not filling out the squad to “help the lads”. Something needs to change. I fear it will have to be Waggott first - let’s hope the rumours are true.
-
Personally, I’d look to change him now while we are still in sight of the play-offs. The lift of a new manager with ideas. Needs to be someone with experience and/or gravitas. If it was to be D Johnson or Downing then I don’t think we’d see much change without a pre-season and the Summer window. Get on the phone to Sparky with a promotion bonus!
