OK neck out- this is a winnable game and we must win. A good away win is always great for kick starting a season (Bradford last year) and Hull look likely to be a struggler/also ran. Need Rovers on the front foot from the start for this one unlike letting Ipswich and Millwall run riot for fifteen minutes. Will be nice to avenge last season's FA Cup defeat.

Difficult it is for Rovers fans to accept, we are not an attractive proposition even with money. The days of John Williams persuading people to come are long gone and I have to say Steve Waggot is in the not yet proved good enough category- Davenport is probably the only signing where silver tongues might have worked given Armstrong knew us already. Results this month are going to be critical to convince potential loanees we are not facing imminent relegation.

Millwall gave us a fright early on but thereafter Rovers remarkably comfortable as the stats show. Not winning is disappointing but a lot of draws so far in this division. Getting wins is going to be the big challenge. Fortunately we are at one of the club's which already look like they might struggle this season in our next game with a midweek cup game hopefully to reacquaint ourselves with winning.

Again best to be pretty neutral about this extended loans only period. I more than half expect Chapman to be back for six months. Beyond this I hope we are looking at game changers rather than squad back-ups.

About 50 of last season's loans converted into permanent transfers with recipient club at the end of the loan period- these numbers don't include Armstrong who of course returned to Newcastle at the end of his loan then was bought on a transfer apparently unrelated to his loan. So the idea that loans are meaningless in terms of permanent strengthening is shot to pieces by the evidence.

People really ought to read that list of transfers and get a grip of themselves.

I broadly disagree. In the current market, nobody knows what "value" is, especially in the Championship where 20 clubs dream of Premier League riches, perhaps half a dozen seriously gamble multi-millions to get there and only three (not necessarily the gamblers) get there. The much vaunted parachute payments are in reality balloons thrown to drowning 20 stone men- their wage bills are so inflated relative to their newly dramatically poorer situations. And there is the trap of FFP waiting to gobble up with fines and transfer bans. Rovers last season were stronger than the squad that got relegated by two miserable goal difference. We have better than replaced the outgoing loanees with permanent signings in my opinion. If we are then to kick on, we have to do so with significantly better players which means cheeky bids at the end of the window having worked the rest of the window showing we are poorer than the proverbial church mouse. This build up to the grand finale worked with the three we signed on permanent deals (would we have got Armstrong for £1.75m if Newcastle thought we had £7m available???). The problem was too many other clubs in similar positions playing similar games and not enough clubs financially distressed for a cheeky offer to work on. So McGinn, Freeman and Brereton were all excellent players to move for but the circumstances of the game as a whole resulted in us finishing empty handed when it came to making a quantum leap forward in quality players. The challenge we now have before 31 August is that every club in the Championship will be looking to do similar loan to buy deals as we will be. I do expect we will fill the numeric squad gaps but we will be lucky to land players who could turn us from bottom half to top half.

Seven signings announced in the last ten minutes- three of them by Everton. If we had £5m burning in our pockets, made sense not to show that number while still trying to squeeze other clubs down on other players. In the end it looks like we didn't have enough dosh to match our ambition in terms of player quality and so didn't have the ability to winkle the ones we wanted out of their current clubs.

As a newly promoted club to the Championship we were not going to be that attractive to players not already familiar with Mowbray and the team spirit here. I am far happier not having spent millions than I would have been bringing in at least 75% of the players linked with us on the last 487 pages. McGinn and Freeman looked interesting as did the City youngster gone to PNE on loan. Armstrong is a deal I thought we wouldn't get so that is a big plus and let's see how Davenport and Rothwell pan out. The squad has strengthened over last season already. My gut feel was always this season was going to be about the calibre of loans we brought in. If we can pull two or three in who can make a significant difference even if the loan fees are pricey and that is where the budget goes, I won't be complaining.

Here's a little gem for you all. Only 77 permanent transfers for fees all summer prior to today. Less than one per club. And we got two (or is it three?) of them.
