More likely he's here as back up and both he and Nyambe will be leaving in summer IF we can't agree a deal for RN I'd have thought. If we're baulking at £3m for an Armstrong replacement, what's the chances we'd pay £3m for a right back? It would surely be way way cheaper to just give Nyambe what he wants. As someone else has just said the deal makes zero commercial sense on a commercial basis.

£25m for Wood is absolutely mental if it goes through. Think Burnley have very much got the better end of that deal, foisting one of their lumps of deadwood (pun intended) off on one of their direct rivals and pocketing a huge sum in return. No good if they don't use the money to strengthen though. If they don't, could be the deal that sends both clubs down.

Given we sold Armstrong for a headline fee of £15m before Newcastle's chunk and the owners completed the exercise with the training ground, I would hope that the reluctance to meet the fee for Maja is down to concerns about his fitness rather than ones about the size of the fee per se. With our best chance of going up in years, (and quite possibly for many years to come) on offer, If we're not prepared to reinvest such a small chunk of the Armstrong proceeds on the chance of promotion it would be hard to escape the conclusion that no-one at the Club is really that serious about promotion. A gift horse has unexpectedly fallen our way, let's not look it squarely in the mouth!

I agree with your respective assessments of all three players. If we went up I'd be delighted if all three signed, I don't think we'd do a lot better in our position at that stage.

Anyone know how Hilton is going on? I saw him once and thought he looked to have all the basics. You look at Pears and he immediately makes you feel nervous notwithstanding when has gone on to have a passable game. He just doesn't fill you with any confidence.

As RN has only just turned 24, is growing in stature all the time and we are 3rd in the table I'm not surprised you're loathe to name said coach as that would tend to suggest he actually knows the square root of naff all. I'd be embarrassed by a revelation like that.

Don't think some including myself are moaning about him coming in as initial backup, more the possibility of him coming in as a replacement for Nyambe this month. And not only are a surprisingly large number of people not moaning about it, they seemingly can't wait to wave Nyambe bye bye!

Seems to be a couple more possibly sniffing round him than round the other two! Hopefully not an issue we have to worry about until the end of the season. If he gives it his all and we go up both Club and player will be in a vastly different situation and I would hope we'd then be able to agree terms with him. If we don't, I'd have thought he'd be able to get a move to the PL. If not however and he only makes a sideways move for similar money it'd be our loss.

Agree with your last paragraph, you may be some way out on your assumed figures though as I was told Rothwell wants more than double the figure you're assuming we might have offered. I'd imagine Nyambe would (rightly) want a lot more as well and that the figure for Lenihan wouldn't be too far out. However you're right, it's now reached the stage whereby it would be batshit crazy for the Club to let anyone go with us sat third in the table and equally inadvisable for the players to sign at this precise moment knowing that they might be able to re-negotiate as Premier League players in a few months time. The only risk the players are taking is if they don't sign now, the promotion bonus only kicks in for players who are under contract just after the start of next season, we go up and then decide to look elsewhere altogether etc etc. The owners have supposedly already said no-one is going anywhere this window and Mowbray has changed his tune and said the supporters wouldn't expect us to break this team up. On the face of it I think that's fair enough and for once let's hope they're as good as their word.

Yep, keep him on his toes. Ideally you'd like competent back up in every position.
