January Transfer window

As long as you are open minded when they sign, which people are. Then I dont see the problem in criticising (or praising, although that side doesnt seem to be shot down as much when people say its a good signing) based on recent form or their career to date. Its all we have to go off. When say Gestede signed, and there are more recent examples. People questioning them was still justifiable, but then once they started exceeding expectations, people praised them. On the flip side, weve signed players expecting them to be good and theyve not worked out as expected. -

Whether Bamford is past it or not, an improvement or not, the solution to our striking problems or not. Surely the fact that hes out for at least a month takes that discussion off the table anyway. -

I never said that. I just think that Jed Wallace wouldnt be a particularly good signing now, he would have been incredible 2 or 3 seasons ago. Im not convinced the Wallace of today would improve us. Hes also on a big contract. If we say bought a quick winger, loaned in Jed Wallace and sold one or two of the plodders have, say Sigurdsson and Hedges. Then that would work. But I cant see that happening. -

We need pace now. If it was Jed Wallace at his peak or anywhere close, then he would be a great signing in spite of not being the quickest just because he was so good at this level. He has never been particularly quick but he certainly had half a yard to be able to get past a full back to get a cross in. Hes on the decline now and not the player he was. He is also on massive wages having got a huge contract when he signed on a free. -

Any player we sign could come in and both positively and negatively defy initial opinions of his signing. Has happened many times. If Eustace isnt arsed about pace and is only bothered about experience for example. Just because thats what he wants doesnt mean anyone needs to agree with that choice. One of the areas that Eustace identified int the summer as lacking is in terms of pace. Its not been addressed and if anything the average age keeps going up. We struggle to counter attack teams and I also think our lack of pace in behind means that Cantwell in particulars impact is limited because we dont have players opening space for them. We have wide men who are plodders who will graft and help their full back but dont open teams up. In my opinion thats what we need. Wallace at his peak would really improve us, now I dont think hw would. -

Makes no difference. Even if it gets heard and they are cleared, they had not shown any interest in the football club long before then. I think some people think it would lead to a healthy transfer budget. -

Yes, because Hedges has never offered the attacking threat that Wallace did at his peak. He was a really productive winger who scored and assisted plenty. Its just now he is on the decline as he ages and after an injury, and has become surplus to requirements. -

Hes never been particularly quick but he could get half a yard at his peak and injuries have slowed him down. Hes gone from being a very good player at this level to one that struggles to get game time. And we badly need pace. -

I dont. And I dont know if they are coming here, we always discuss transfer rumours as if they will happen to discuss whether we would want them or not. I wouldnt want those 2 here either way. -

"Has been." A number of years ago. Now he he is constantly injured including for the next 4 weeks. Wallace again was a good winger in his day, but is slowing down after an injury. -

The odd one can be useful in bringing experience. Not too many though especially attackers who are slowing down in an area where we are already pedestrian. -

https://westbrom.com/forum/index.php?topic=27002.500 West Brom fans put Wallace's decline down to an injury which has robbed him of half a yard of pace. -

He does seem to be idolised by the few with more money than sense who pay for his patreon and then come on here and defend him to the hilt. All a bit strange. -

You keep trying to dismiss my argument that we shouldnt sign certain players we are linked with because I am not a scout with a handy list of numerous players to hand. We badly need pace, our attack is so laborious, dull and slow. We should be spending money too, it shouldnt just be players in their 30s on loan. Jed Wallace was a very good Championship winger in his day. Now, a direct Championship rival deems him as nothing other than a sub to use at the end. He hasnt had any impact all season, is 31 soon and his athleticism will be on the wane. Bamford is constantly injured and is currently out for 4 weeks. Hardly one to come straight in. He hasnt scored many goals for a number of years with injuries catching up on him. Im guessing youd want both "because Eustace wants them" and "Harry Leonard says we need experience." If our January transfer window ended with Forshaw, Sanderson, Wallace and Bamford. Do you fancy us for top 6? -

We badly need pace, it seems like we are just trying to sign hasbeens. -

He scored 14 goals in the season after the one you presumably are referring to. That is a very impressive goal tally for a wide player. He also scored almost 1 in 2 at Premier League level in the second half of last season for a side that was terrible. -

It wont happen but he is far, far better than what we have. He hasnt really played since he left but he did well in the Premier League for Sheffield United. He has pace and gives you goals. -

Brereton would be a very good signing, but it isnt happening. Would be something if we signed with an obligation to buy upon promotion, if we then got promoted and paid a big fee for a player we let go for free when we had chances to sell for big money the summer before when the owners refused. -
His movement is the strongest part of his game to be fair to him, its what he does when he gets into those positions that is lacking at the moment. Either way, I dont see a Championship standard striker there at the moment and regular game time ideally in League 1. He has missed a lot of football out injured and it could enhance his development.
-
I thought he was poor and I think in general he isnt up to Championship standard at the moment and could do with a regular run of games out on loan especially after his bad luck with injuries. The one thing he does have is the anticipation to get into goalscoring positions, he probably got into as many today as Gueye has all season. It tends to be a natural ability rather than something you can teach. He did it last season a lot too but as for much of last season it was followed with poor finishing. His repeated inability to stay onside was frustrating as it broke down the potential of any attacks.

A lot dismiss its importance but always good to get through to the next round of the cup and also to halt a poor run of form. Boro rolled over with a massively changed side whereas we put close to our most likely available 11 out so you would expect us to win but a professional job nonetheless. Defence again solid as a rock, never felt like we would concede. Toth made a decent save and a few standard catches although a couple of mistakes on the ball. Tronstad as ever very good. Going forward we simply dont have the quality. Leonard is nowhere near it, missed some sitters and doesnt seem to understand the offside rule. Cantwell again anonymous, JRC never a winger and Weimann is over the hill but at least he has the ability to put away chances. We badly need some quality and pace through the door ASAP. In light of Baker going back, Travis being out and signing Forshaw, Buckley unfortunately might have a bit of a run at game time. He again was terrible.
