But which of those things qualifies him for a role managing the development of academy/reserve players (requires coaching experience) and their loan moves (requires experience dealing with other clubs, agents, and scouting)?

Genuine guy, connection to the club, worked his way through the leagues, has family (and hopefully the connections that come with) in the game. I can’t see it as a problem really. Better than a black hole.
