Never Mowbray's fault - check -
I did say it was the system that was working. I'm aware of where Travis and Butterworth came from. We're picking up the ones that the big clubs in the area discard and then developing them.
-
Mowbray is criticised for not playing enough Academy lads (possibly with merit) but what can't be denied is that the Academy system is working. Having the likes of Nyambe, Raya, Lenihan and Travis as regular first teamers is testament to the job that the people running the Academy have done. For a club in a highly competitive area for youth recruitment it is hugely impressive. The system at Brockhall obviously works. Now we also have the likes of Butterworth being slowly integrated into the 1st team squad. I think Sharpe in the LT hinted that Wharton may start to be included again and that is why Downing has been allowed to leave. Maintaining the Cat 1 status and developing our own players is going to be vital for us financially. The Academy should pay for itself through the money it saves us in the transfer market.

TBF Downing would look good against a team that puts a lot of balls in the box because he is comfortable with the aerial stuff. Downing's problems come when he is up against pace. He turns like a carthorse. Rodwell, based on his appearances so far, also struggles with people running at him, hence the two (?) penalties he's given away in his brief time on the pitch. Sheff Utd ironically wanted the much-maligned Lenihan. Probably because he fits the bill of being big and strong and capable of running the ball out of defence. If there is a gem in that defence it's him (and Nyambe).

Possibly, but watching the WBA match it seemed we didn't drop as deep because we had more athleticism and composure in midfield in the form of Travis. By the 75th minute we've normally lost one of Smallwood or Evans because they are running on fumes. That's normally when our defensive problems start. -

When we defend properly you're right, but it doesn't happen often enough. Get that right and add a bit more creative nouse and we won't be far away from the play-offs. Easier said than done but that's what the manager is paid for, and Venky's are expecting. -

Venus is absent from the club. We go on a bad run. Venus comes back. We start winning. He's got it, yeah baby, he's got it. -

Varney is tearing it up in L2 so you may want to re-assess. -

Where he is man-marked nearly every game because we don't really have anyone else worth marking in the attacking MF areas! Teams don't tend to man-mark shite. -

He makes a good point about our physicality, and theirs. He says we matched them (I've not seen it) and that's why we won …. and that they win their games by being more physical than the oppo. That much was evident at Ewood in the corresponding fixture. The one thing that can't be levelled at Mowbray's team is that we get out-fought or out-muscled because we rarely ever do.... even at MIllwall. When fans bemoan our lack of quality (which we all do to a degree) there is a danger that we will lose what makes us effective if we replace too many players with the Palmers of this world. I like the midfield three from Evans/Smallwood/Reed/Bennett/Travis. What lets it down is that we don't have someone doing regularly on the left what Armstrong did for 5 minutes yesterday. -

He played in a better team last season relative to the opposition. This season the responsibility on his shoulders is huge. Yet Dack is still the top scoring AM in the league. He's got more than highly-lauded Harry Wilson and Harvey Barnes. As a goalscoring AM he is a bit special, as this seasons goal return has showed. It's needs putting in context too. He is the top scoring AM in the league in a team that creates very few chances from open play. He's kicked on this year, not dropped off. -

LT: A late bang in the face for David Raya who is led off the pitch holding his eye stemming the flow of blood. It must be bad if his eye has come out. Hope it's not the same injury as before. -

In-game hysteria is never the best idea at 0-0. I didn't watch it so you might be right about it being shyte. The home fixture was too. However, a 2-0 win down there though is a cracking result. -

Good move to Pompey for Downing if Madon is correct. Nuttall has earned his chance tonight. It's up to him to take it. £7m on BB though.... -

Lets see what Nuttall can do. Good to see Travis keep his place. Rodwell IMO is a liability. -

Millwall have won 5 and lost only 1 of their last 8 at home. Only Leeds have got more home points in that time. We've only 1 won of our last 8 away (Bolton - 3 months ago). Nobody has conceded more goals than us (15) over the last 6 away games. Away banker. Put yer mortgage etc
